A Good Wind: Ryu Guide

A Good Wind: Ryu Guide

Very good guide, is very informative and teaches how Ryu works very well.
One of the best detailed guides I've ever seen
D
Extremely helpful.
Very helpful, thanks :)
Amazing! On my journey as a Ryu main now.
Not only useful information, but also maps to play on? Amazing!
The detail provided in this guide makes me excited to finally practice Ryu once I get my Wii U :)
Glad to see that im not as clueless as I thought about this great character. Tons of useful information even if you don't play Ryu, though. Thanks for doing all this research!
Learning some new combos and really appreciate the work put into this.
great hope to see this grow as his meta evolves
excellent detail, extremely helpful and useful. i especially like the color coding and organizing, great work :)
I appreciate the combo material from the tilts and things, it's simple and handy. Thanks bro. Also you should consider adding Techniques with each attack, especially jabs & tilts. Such as always attempting 3 jabs because of it's high output and his slow grab, or strong up-tilt when they attempt a dash attack/grab. Oh, his f-air has high shield damage at his thigh as well. That's something you can add.

I think it's redundant and in bad form to tell people how to play the character i.e. "always attempting 3 jabs" because that just leads to predictability and auto-piloting.
Very nice guide.
Mostly just learned that most of his attacks have Light and Hard variations and I don't have to be bothered with those tricky Medium inputs. That and kinda got a good feel for how to translate the L, M, H, using all of his attacks [e.g. with cr. L & M K it's just cr. A and cr [A] then cr. HK is down smash].

I like how you used Soul Cal notation. Only thing I think the guide is lacking is you never mention qcf, qcb, hcf, dp, etc. Sooooooo.... here goes.

789
456
123

When facing right...
qcf [quarter circle forward, aka hadouken ] is 236
qcb [quarter circle back, sometimes refered to as tatsu] is 214
dp [Dragon punch ] is 623
hcf [half circle forward] is 41236

There are other similar notations in the world of street fighter. But I just posted the ones that will be used for Ryu in smash.

Also, bonus [and I haven't tested this and really wonder if it's a thing in smash] are jump cancels with notations like tiger knee notation

2369+A [in games like sfIV, Capcom vs whatever, and other command input heavy fighter (basically everything that's not smash) you can input 2369+Attack for an attack that's normally 236+attack in other to do the attack at the lowest possible point in the air. ] This command in capcom vs whatever games is useful for jump cancelling combo's.

Also it can be used for any move that's available in air while grounded. For DP it's 6239+A. Sometimes the air versions are better than the ground or the jump will cancel whatever attack you're doing...

Really need to get ryu and test all this **** out now...

I didn't include Tiger Knee notation because it's easier to jump cancel with an assigned button rather than tapping up on the control stick (also because I do not use tap jump). I added the names for the input motions as you suggested however.
I learned so many things while reading this. Thanks! Will definitely improve my Ryu game.
This is really well made and everything I was looking for in a Ryu guide. But I have two questions about his DRAGON PUNCH OF JESUS. Can negative edge be used with it, and does 33+A work to activate it as well?

Yes to both.
This is a great guide. I will show this to other aspiring RYu mains
Now this. THIS is a guide. Very in depth and meaty. Early days for Ryu, but really cleans up all his fundamentals well. Great guide!
Thank you so much for the info. Learned a lot of things I didn't know, very descriptive, even went into training mode while reading to test what you posted. Accurate information! Love it. Hope to see it stay updated in the future.
When he asked us if he could write an amazing guide... We all told him SHORYOUCAN!
As a Ryu main, this guide takes the cake. Well done man. Very well done. Keep it updated though, and don't forget to announce the changes on the board. Peace.
