Lucas. We all know him(Okay, most of us do, but if you're here, I assume you know who Lucas is.), the beloved protagonist of Mother 3. Lucas has, since his early days in Brawl, been labeled a Ness clone and pushed back in favor of the "Superior" PSI boy. I'm here, today, to tell you why Lucas is so much more than a clone, and perhaps-- better than his Back Throw Ebola counterpart.
Part One-- Moves
There's Lucas's moves. Now, here's what you can do with them.
Tips, Tricks, and Combos
The first one of the PK Headbutt. This is a fairly simple act, which involves you hitting yourself with PK Thunder to purposely attack the opponent instead of recover.
Next is the D-Tilt to Jab Combo. Using D-Tilt 5-6 times, than Jab Combo, allows you to rack up FAR more damage than before, up to 27-30 damage if done right, which isn't hard.
Now, the Freeze Reflection. Stand in the middle of the stage after launching your opponent, and they're trying to vertically recover. Use PK Freeze and release it when the opponent is right below the ledge. If done right, the move will freeze them and send them flying in the opposite direction. A satisfying kill technique.
Next is the B-Air Meteor. This is pretty much, after launching or throwing an opponent off stage, time your jumps and use your B-Air to meteor smash them. Hit with the sweetspot-- you'll know when you've done it right.
Now, the Forward N-Air Jump. Jump forward into a N-Air. Takes a few tries to get it right, but it's worth the training.
Next is the N-Air Chain. Perform a Forward N-Air Jump, then drop to the ground and repeat. If done correctly, you should be able to trap your opponent with a series of N-Airs. A great way to rack up damage.
Now, everyone's favorite part of the guide! Can I get a drumroll, please... give it up for COMBOOOOOS!
Yeah, maybe I overdid it. But Lucas is no stranger to combos-- he employs many to brutal efficiency. Here's five.
Down-Throw into N-Air: Right after the throw, shorthop into a neutral air. A good combo, racking up 15-17 percent.
Down-Throw into Up-Smash: A 0% alternative to the above combo on middleweight to heavyweight characters. Does 24-25 damage, and a great "first blood" move.
Down-Throw into Up-Air: Similar execution to the first combo, but instead shorthop into an Up-Air. Does slightly more damage, but has a slightly less chance of hitting. Risk and reward, I guess.
Up-Tilt into Up-Air: Perform and Up-Tilt, then shorthop into an up-air. Works at mid percents on most of the roster(20-70%).
Down-Tilt into D-Smash: Down-Tilt two or three times, then let loose with an uncharged D-Smash. Great launch and damage, but can't kill due to the percentage window at which it works. Perhaps, on the very edge of the stage, and against a small portion of the roster(Fox notably), but other than that, don't rely on it for kills.
Now, for the part you probably don't care for, but here you go: Killing Options!
Down-Smash: Lucas's most reliable killing option, in my view. It has very fast execution, and has a high launch. It is also a good roll punisher, and great range comparable to that of King Dedede or Shulk.
Forward-Smash: Not as good a kill tool as D-Smash or U-Smash, but still worth noting as it's the fastest in execution of his three smashes. Also notably, you can reflect projectiles for killing as well.
Up-Smash: Lucas's highest launching move. Though it's slow in startup, it draws in foes and does incredible launch comparable to the F-Smashes of Bowser, King Dedede, or Ganondunk.
Forward Air: Hitting with the 13% sweetspot at the edge of the PSI can launch and kill very effectively. In midair, it works as one of his best kill options.
Back Air: The meteor smash is the only part of this move that kills, the rest... kinda sucks.
Back-Throw: Lucas's killing throw. Not much to say here.

Part One-- Moves
- Jab Combo: Three rapid-hitting kicks and punches. 2, 3, 5 damage, respectively.
- Forward Tilt: Shoot out a burst of PSI from your palm to attack. 7 damage sourspotted, 10 damage sweetspotted.
- Dash Attack: Similar to F Tilt, but with enhanced sweetspots/sourspots that do 7, 9, 11, and 13 damage, depending on how close you hit to the edge of the burst. Does more damage at the edge.
- Down Tilt: A swift, low kick that chains into itself several times at lower percentages. 3 damage.
- Up Tilt: Bring a burst of PSI from your heel to your head to strike twice, akin to Pit's Up Tilt. 1, 8 damage.
- Pummel: Headbutt the opponent. 2 damage.
- Down Throw: Use your Rope Snake to weakly bury the opponent. 8 damage, a good combo starter.
- Forward Throw: Use your Rope Snake to sling the opponent forward. 11 damage.
- Back Throw: Not as potent as Ness's, but still a good kill throw. 11 damage.
- Up Throw: Use your Rope Snake to hurl the opponent skyward. Combos at low percents. 10 damage.
- Neutral Air: One of my favorite moves to use. Lucas spins around, hitting five times, 1, 1, 1, 1, 5, with suction. A great move in many areas of application.
- Forward Air: F Tilt in midair, really. Follows the same sweetspotting rules.
- Back Air: Bring your foot over your head with a burst of PSI. 12 damage, has a powerful sweetspot at Lucas's heel at the beginning of a move that has a meteor smash!
- Down Air: A series of four PSI-powered downward kicks. 2, 3, 3, 4 damage, and the last one has a weak meteor smash.
- Up Air: A powerful headbutt, solidly weaker than Ness's.
- Forward Smash: A powerful strike in front with a stick. 17-23 damage. It even reflects projectiles!
- Up Smash: An ultra-powerful explosion of PSI that has one of the highest launches in the game. 23-31 damage. (Geez!)
- Down Smash: Three consecutive blasts of PSI in front of Lucas, dealing weakening damage with each hit. 17-23 damage, decreases by 3 with each hit. Each hit gets weaker but is bigger.
- PK Freeze(Neutral B): An attack of icy power. Similar to Ness's PK Flash, but only does 19-20 damage and freezes opponents instead. Travels much farther, much quicker.
- PK Fire(Side B): A burst of fire shoots forward, exploding once to knock the target back. Unlike Ness's, it travels straight in midair. 10 damage.
- PK Thunder(Up B) Shoot out a steerable ball of lightning that you can hit Lucas with to send him flying with a powerful, multi-hitting attack. It is weaker than Ness's PK Thunder, but can hit opponents repeated times. Travels slower than Ness's PK Thunder.
- PSI Magnet(Down B) A psychic vortex appears in front of you to absorb energy projectiles to heal you. Has a hitbox in the center that does 8 damage.
