Charizard Clues - A Competitive Charizard Guide

What's up, fellow Smashers. Welcome to this series of Charizard competitive tutorials! I provide comprehensive details about the art of the Zard in the form of both text and video.
Overview

Charizard is an all-rounder, heavyweight character that excels at the bait-and-punish archetype. Both his offensive and defensive metagames are balanced, as he has moves that are both powerful and fast, but also some moves that help his defense.
Guide

This guide is grouped into moves and is updated regularly.
Rock Smash

Video:

Pros:
  • Rock Smash has a very good amount of super armor, ranging from frames 5-22 before the rock is broken.
  • This move deals up to around 30% of damage, and it also has considerable range.
  • It can also combo or even KO opponents, being able to combo into forward air and other fast moves, despite high ending lag. The headbutt has potential to KO, with 15% of damage and high knockback at higher percents.
Cons:
  • High ending lag leaves Charizard punishable right after using the move.
Clues (tips):
  • Use Rock Smash to escape combos
Don’t you hate when you’re playing Charizard and you’re being comboed/juggled around? Once you’re near the opponent, hit ‘em with Rock Smash to get back on stage and possibly start a combo of your own.

  • Use the Ledge Drop Rock Smash technique
A good technique for Charizard is to recover low (although it’s not always the best idea) in order to get back on stage. But if your opponent is trying to edge-guard you, drop from the ledge, jump right after, and then execute Rock Smash to dish out some damage right back at them and gain safety in getting back on the stage.

  • Use the Sliding Rock Smash technique
This technique is super useful on the ground, as it propels Charizard forward while using Rock Smash. It can be used to punish an opponent in many situations. Here’s a helpful video as to how it can be performed (and actually where I learned it):
