Combo-ing your way to victory! ~ A Captain Falcon guide

Game Versions
Smash 3DS
Smash 4 Captain Falcon Guide

Char overview

Captain Falcon has always been regarded as one of the fastest characters to appear throughout the whole Smash series. This speed allows Captain Falcon to be able to become really unpredictable in the right hands. However it is extremely difficult to master Captain Falcon. The current Captain Falcon now relies mainly on his true combo game mainly in the form of aerials however his play on the ground has been buffed slightly. Captain Falcon also has a very useful ability of integrating KO finishers to the end of combos much easier than many other fighters. Captain Falcon is aimed at players whose play style involves getting up in the face of the enemy to then bait out and punish. A useful thought is Captain Falcon has no Mid-range or Long-range so if you like to have that little bit of zoning. Captain Falcon is not for you

Moves

Ground – Although Captain Falcon's play on the ground has been buffed somewhat, you really do not want to be relying on it solely.

Jabs

1- The Gentleman (Hit A 3 times only)

Description - Captain Falcon does a short range jab, and another jab when pressed again and finally

Captain Falcon knee jabs the enemy and sends them to the air

Percent Damage - 9% With all three hits

Combo at most % = Gentleman – Dash attack

Opinion – Probably my favourite out of the two jab options that Captain Falcon has. When playing offensively it can be used to continue most combos and add another 9% easily. Also, with the amount of knock-back that that the gentleman offers. You can turn the battle in your favour by knocking the opponent into the air.

2- The “Flurry” (Spam A)

Description – Basically a weaker form of Little Mac's flurry. Ends with knock up

Percent Damage – Depends on how long you continue to use the flurry until it ends

Combo – None really known to me

Opinion – Although it has been buffed since brawl it's only real use that I use is a really weak edge guard or punish people jumping. Not really too much to say.

Tilts

1- D-Tilt

Description - Normal speed ground sweep. Opponent launches in a negative parabolic shape

Percent Damage – 10%

Combo – Maybe dash attack if you are quick enough

Opinion – Because of the way that it launches. I mainly use this to start edge-guarding. Because unless the opponent has really good horizontal recovery they will have a hard time to deal with this

2 S-Tilt

Description – Normal speed kicks that can be tilted up medium or down

Percent Damage – 9%

Combo – I only really use dash attack due to the way I use the side tilt

Opinion – In my eyes the side tilt is a more defensive approach, the knock-back this tilt gives is enough that it gives me the impression that it should be used to punish dashes and jumps to then turn Captain Falcon to go more aggressive. I don't really use this much unless I am pressured

3 U-Tilt

Description – The famous axe kick, relies on spacing to be able to meteor smash

Percent Damage – 11%

Opinion – The reason the mini combo thingie is not in this tilt is because this tilt has so many uses to form many combos, it has the ability to reset combos if you land with the opponent. Or even if the opponent lands. You can combo into this tilt as well. It is a very useful tool to use

Aerial Combos – Captain Falcon utilises aerials really well. We will go through the tilts in this section but the beefier combos will be later

1 - N-Air

Description – Captain Falcon kicks twice in the air very fast.

Percent Damage - 4% First kick, 6% Second kick

Opinion – Very useful initiate when facing against opponents the same size as Captain Falcon. Bear in mind the first kick on it's own can combo start

2 F-Air

Description – Captain Falcon's amazing knee! Nuff' said

Percent Damage – 19%

Opinion – Such an amazing and stylistic finisher. Kills at around 80%. You can short hop to sweetspot it on the ground for an easy KO. They have fixed the knee being able to actually get combo'd into aswell so you can have more knees to the face! (bear in mind it's lag and recovery)

3 B-Air

Description – Captain Falcon throws his fist backwards

Percent Damage - 14%

Opinion – This move is actually really great for edge-guarding, I only really used it because of the fact that it is an amazing kill move above 100%. However its true power is lain in the edge-guarding

4 D-Air

Description – Captain Falcon stomps downwards

Percent damage – 14%

Opinion – Great to meteor smash, great recovery, use this often

Grabs

There really isn't too much to discuss about every grab apart from the down throw, so I won't mention them but do try them out especially the backthrow at high percent

Downthrow

Description – Slams opponent into the ground

Percent Damage – 6%

Opinion – Very great throw, 9 times out of 10 you can combo this into an aerial

Dash Attack

Description- Fast shoulder bash

Percent Damage – 10%

Opinion – Amazing combo potential with this quick attack. Has great knock up to combo

Smash Attacks

S-Smash

Description – Elbow smash

Percent Damage – Depends on charge

Opinion – Like all smashes it is way to punishable so only use if you have really read your opponent

U-Smash

Description – Weird kick thing

Percent Damage – Depends on charge

Opinion – Kinda useful to continue combos but you really have much better options

D-Smash

Description – Double kick rotation

Percent Damage – Depends on charge

Opinion – Because of all the roll spammers that are currently in this game this is quite useful to punish and smash

Specials

Up-B

Description – Falcon Dive

Percent Damage - 17%

Opinion – Useful vertical recovery. Sometimes you can end a U-Air string with this to get more damage but it's way too punishable

Side-B

Description – The Raptor Boost

Percent – 9%

Opinion – Kill move plus 100% potentially can meteor smash in the air but isn't recommended

Down-B

Description – Falcon Kick

Percent – 13%

Opinion – AVOID THIS LIKE THE PLAGUE. It leaves you way too open.

Neutral – B

Description – Falcon Punch

Percent – 25%

Opinion – Way to hard to actually hit. Only really use it if you have like 10 lives up on the enemy

Overall Play-Style

With Captain Falcon you really don't want to be on the defensive at any point. You always want to control the flow and pace of the battle for maximum damage. While approaching your enemy. Take everything slow and find a pattern in the opponents movements. With Falcon you really want to bait out something obvious and then grab and throw to up airs for a 30% ish combo. You may want to use falling u-airs or short hop n-airs to approach too. Don't forget the dash attack but do not use all the time or you will be so predictable even DSP could beat you!

More advanced combos will be included when I have the internet capable of uploading this video
