That's just a shot in the dark, though. From memory, there was a similar practice back in the day on YouTube in the form of Multi-Channel Networks, which would often be the only way you could get paid for your videos because it was pre-monetisation, but was also genuinely useful for networking and equipment at the time - despite the fact that they were very obviously running predatory contracts that would often take revenue in perpetuity, like that massive controversy with Machinima in around 2013. As the process of recording and editing videos became more commonplace, those MCNs became much less useful - not to mention when YouTube democratised monetisation.
Not saying it's necessarily a good thing that companies like Hololive exist - personally, I think it's all too often the case that they fall into scummy practices despite ostensibly offering something positive - moreso, I think that's probably why they came about. (Can't be certain, though. That's just a guess on my part.)
