    Yoshi Theater: video thread

The following video got posted on Reddit recently: Comments are here: https://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/3l3k9h/tongue_foo_my_first_combo_video_ac/ Thoughts? I've put most of mine in Reddit comments, but I specifically want to say I had no idea D-throw -> B-reversed Egg Lay was a thing.

Unpopular opinion: Yoshi is not high tier. Evidence inside.

From a game design perspective, yes. Yoshi requires the armor because of how his recovery is designed. I'm not debating whether this is good or bad design - it's not relevant to the discussion. From a game play perspective, we have armor on our double-jump. It is a strength of the character and...

Yes! Thank you! This is pretty much what I've been trying to get at with all of my posts, but you've done a far better job of getting it across than I have. :) Yoshi's competitive advantage, being fair, is that you will have roughly an even match-up or better against the entire cast. The...

Dabuz also places Yoshi as a "high tier" character, but at 17 instead of ESAM's 7: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IokTZ78pU_I&t=7m25s. His comments are more negative than ESAM's, but I think his criticisms are interesting. He pins a lot of the problem on Yoshi's better options requiring him...

Yes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEe08ahv0jo&t=10m45s Also, I said I thought most of what he said was on point. Forgot to mention that I still think 7th is a bit high. Just arguing that ESAM also doesn't seem to feel his lack of certain options is enough to push him out of "high tier".

Not that it matters if you're going into self-exile, but you aren't really wrong. The negative things you're pointing out about Yoshi are mostly true! Unfortunately, I still have to disagree with your "broader argument". You think these negative things prevent him from being "high tier". I...

No offense, but I feel like maybe you shouldn't be playing Yoshi? Yes, you can point out why every single one of his moves is "bad". But, you could do the same thing for any other character, including Sheik. You are completely ignoring all the good things about these moves just to suit your...

Dair's purpose in Yoshi's kit, from a game design perspective, is to punish - hard. It's one of the highest damaging moves in the game for this reason. That's also why it doesn't lock and why it has high end-lag. It's supposed to be high risk/high reward. I get that you want to use it to...

This doesn't sound like "-3 probably", Slush... For my part, at least, I've only been arguing that Yoshi needs someone (would love for it to be me, but I've got a long way to go :P) to really optimize his play. I agree completely that it'll be someone like you or KDB - an actual Yoshi main...

So, just wanted to point out that Raptor is currently top-12 at Smash Con: http://supersmashcon.challonge.com/wiiusingles. :D EDIT: Super unfortunate time-out on the first match against DKWill... Actually pretty confident Raptor could have won that. :(

You're mostly not wrong - he's incredibly similar to his Brawl iteration. But, we aren't in KansasBrawl anymore. Metaknight isn't God-tier, Ice Climbers and Snake don't exist, Falco and Marth are trash... Does Yoshi need vast improvement over Brawl to be "high tier"? I'd be lying if I said I...

I also agree with Raptor's perspective here. Yoshi is a deceptively difficult character and I haven't seen anyone optimize him to the breaking point yet. We shouldn't be giving up on him because we're not getting results. We should be realizing that Yoshi is showing us just how much more...

I'm going to define "high tier" character as one having recent top results at a major tournament. Based on this definition, Pikachu is "high tier" literally just because of ESAM. No one else (that I'm aware of) plays that character anywhere close to such a high level. Let's assume that Yoshi...

    Yoshi Theater: video thread

This is the only match I watched (the video quality is unfortunate :() Three comments: 1. You sometimes throw out attacks that have no hope of connecting, but are pretty punishable. I do the same thing and working on being more patient has really helped me improve. 2. Where are the eggs?! I...

    Yoshi Theater: video thread

We have weekly tournaments that I run in my area and I finally won one! Our best two players thought they'd be able to play random or low-tier characters and still beat us, which caused them to be taken out fairly early in the bracket. :P Here's my finals match against Nani (Link)...
