With the Ninth Generation approaching rapidly, I wanted to share my favorite games of this generation, in no particular order:
1.) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch/Wii U, March 2017)
The best game of this generation, if not of all time. You see that volcano hundreds of miles away? You can go there. You see that snowy mountain peak? You can go there. The open world is massive, and there is so much to do. The atmosphere and story are perfect, too. Roaming the world and being reminded of the Calamity 100 years ago invokes the feels. The artstyle helps make the game beautiful even on the Switch's relatively weak hardware.
2.) Undertale (PC, September 2015)
Undertale is one of the biggest indie titles of all time and is a masterpiece. It may not have cutting edge graphics, but the story and characters are what make the game shine. I won't spoil the story, as it is best experienced with no spoilers.
3.) Super Mario Odyssey (Switch, October 2017)
The good old sandbox 3D Mario returned with Super Mario Odyssey. A really graphically stunning game, and probably the best platformer ever. The Cappy mechanics are so fun to master, too.
4.) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Switch, December 2018)
I really don't need to elaborate on this one. This is gaming's greatest crossover, where Steve from Minecraft can fight Mario, Solid Snake, Sonic, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Cloud, and Banjo at the same time.
5.) Them's Fightin' Herds (PC, April 2020)
A really fun indie fighting game with six (soon to be seven) playable animals. It originally started off as a My Little Pony fangame, but after a Cease and Desist from Hasbro morphed into its own thing. My current profile picture, Oleander (minus the Geno hat), comes from this game. Oh yeah, and Arizona for Smash please Sakurai.
Some quick honorable mentions and why I didn't include them:
Minecraft (PC) - Launched officially in 2011, technically making it a 7th Gen game.
Terraria (PC) - Also launched in 2011.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D (3DS) - A remake of a 5th Gen game.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD (Wii U) - A remake of a 6th Gen game.
Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4) - Haven't beaten it yet.
Ratchet & Clank (PS4) - Haven't beaten it yet.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Switch) - I like it, but not really a best of the generation game to me.
