In the previous game, at the end of the story you rescue a baby metroid that just hatched out of an egg right after you destroy all the other metroids on the planet. In this game, the giant metroid that attacks you is the same one; it leeches off your health until you're at 1 hp, then it backs off when it recognizes you.
