roleplay servers in any mmo are a strange, very often wonderful, wild, and sometimes scary place.
you think you’re going in there to just give your original characters some backstory and personality. Maybe learn the lore a bit, get ”in character” and act like you’re that wizard who summons meteors, that warrior who took on a full army and won…
you end up realizing there’s drama, lots of drama. That never just stays “in character”, you realize many people use this as a serious escape from a painful traumatic real life, and sometimes have trouble getting back into reality because of it.
you realize most players are seriously projecting their idealized selves into their characters. Almost everyone has that “main” that has suspiciously far more details about their background than any other.
…and You realize many people are also using it as an e-dating platform, and they’re into “that” kind of roleplay, in game and out and they’ll do whatever they can to try and drag you into it(thank god I have made it clear that’s a big no and shut down all who try).
But something else also happens when you join a roleplay server…
…you often find some things that are severely lacking on normal ones. A sense of community. And serious friendships.
Don’t just join a roleplay server on a whim. Know what you might be getting into. Make it explicitly clear on your profile what kind of roleplay you’re into, what kind you’re not.
Research it. Heavily.
You'll either have the most fun you ever had in your game of choice, or it’ll be a nightmare.
