I am another person who just played Smash casually but over time, you get tired of losing because of a pokeball, you don't want to win based on a bob-omb, you want to win based on skill and the training started there. I stopped using Link and picked up Pikachu because I remember my dad using him when we would play 64 together when i was little, I was very mediocre basically spamming Down B because I was so little. When melee came out, I only used Pikachu and since I was so little, I never got into doing basic competitive stuff like wave dashing or L cancelling. I suppose I didn't really start getting "good" until Brawl came out (which is ironic because Brawl has the weakest competitive game in the series IMO). I played against a friend of mine over and over and pretty much always came out on top. There was a lot of times where it was close and either he would win or I would but mostly I would win. Eventually, I met two other friends who claimed to be good at Smash. I was in the mentality that I could never lose so I boasted how good I was which was really dumb and immature looking back at it and they made me eat my words. My standard run and attack technique was easily beaten by them and since then, I've improved immensely. In smash 3ds, I wanted to choose a different main but i'm just so used to Pikachu that he has really stuck on to me though I like to play with Marth every now and again. Since then we've all improved. Now my friends and I are the best smashers at our school (me being the weakest of us three) I consider myself to be pretty good I suppose.
