Hello former DK main and welcome to Smashboards. This conflicted DK main would like to know why you dropped the character in favor of lower ranked heavies.

There are several reasons why I consider Ridley and K. Rool to be my mains now, rather than DK. First, from Smash 64 to Smash 4, I considered DK my main because he was the character I used most and probably my best character. However, I never played competitively and my friends don't really care about Smash, so I never really had the chance to play against anyone else. So, he was my main, but playing against lvl 9 CPUs and a group of generally disinterested friends can only help you improve so much.

I started off using DK in Ultimate; I cleared World of Light pretty much only using DK (I managed to get him quite early) and collected the remaining Spirits on the Spirit Board using him. Then I tried playing online and got my butt kicked to put it mildly. I fell to around 200k GSP in short order. I gave other characters a try and found that Ridley and K. Rool were easier for me to use and I managed to get them into Elite. Not to mention that I had wanted both characters in Smash since Melee, so I was pretty excited to use them anyway. I still use and practice with DK. I even managed to get within striking distance of Elite with DK, but recently lost a lot of GSP thanks to my tendency to always rematch. That being said, it seems to me that I am better with and have more success using Ridley and K. Rool versus DK.

I'm also a sucker for underdogs, so Ridley and K. Rool's status as low-tier appeals to me. I much prefer the challenge of succeeding with a low-tier character, even if it means I struggle a bit more. There isn't a competitive scene near me either and I have no intention of going pro, so tiers aren't really a meaningful limitation on my enjoyment of the game.
