people don't always make show to teach people things

But educating people is not the only goal of TV shows (or other media) aimed at adults. Art is no replacement for actual education and it's unreasonable to expect creators to act like it is. If you're an adult and watching a show rated for adults, you should already know the difference between good and bad without a piece of entertainment doing that for you.

Besides, there's a huge difference between showing something bad and promoting that bad thing to your audience. You can show violence on-screen in a story about how harmful and ineffectual it is at solving problems. You can show sex to convey that it's something normal that adults do and nothing to be ashamed for. You can show cursing because people do actually curse in real life and ignoring that isn't going to improve the story etc.

I'm not saying artists should try cramming mature content to make their work more mature. But it's not a "bad influence" to simply see sides of life that you're not comfortable within the media. If anything, a well-written story about those things can help you to confront with such issues in the safety of your position as the audience.

I still enjoy watching children's shows but there are a lot of things that you simply can't discuss in them and that's fine. As a grown-up, I shouldn't need them to teach me anything in the first place.

I am not talking about just educating. In fact, that is a mere fraction of what I mean.

I am talking about so-called “adult” TV shows being good role models for adults, if you know what I mean, and the TV shows are not exactly reflecting what being an adult should be in real life.

I just don’t think that things with violence, cursing and sex at the least make so called “adult“ media any better than the kids media that is often made fun of.
