It’s a term that, IIRC, Sakurai said in a direct once, describing Smash (that or how it was translated, anyways). It has sometimes spiraled into a way to criticize Smash for either not quite living up to that in certain ways or, for some, even focusing too much on that as opposed to just Nintendo/Smash’s original focuses. Though sometimes it’s just fun to also conceptualize such a roster separately and see which aspects of gaming history others feel like including and emphasizing, as well. It could be a mostly value-neutral term if one wants it to be.
