  • What's your opinion on Sir Moresty's videos on you?

Yee. Didn't know Goemon had tons of entries as well.
Will keep those in mind at my old age where I can play the classics. (Assuming those games aren't lost to time cause video game preservation issues)

    - If I'm reading you right. The Steve skibidi toilet section was meant as a Jab at yourself for mingling Minecraft with other 'Modern, Fad Games' by your definition.

So are these ending quotes completely serious?
"Seeing Steve makes me uneased as if next time Jonesy is gonna drop into battle, which is just... disgusting..."
"If keeping Steve opens the door to Jonesy, then get off my lawn."

It's not hard to see why people would take issue with that. As much as you may disagree with the inclusions.
Listening back to whole section, I (& I'm assuming many people) can't tell if you're serious or not through your tone.

IDK, if you're goal there was to make light of the 'I'm old' comments, you only reenforced them.

    - I get you don't agree that Modern Gaming History holds the same weight. I don't agree with your take, but I'm not gonna spend time debating it since many people already have and I can't add anything new to it.

I will argue that the bigger discussion is that History isn't the number 1 factor to a new fighter.
As I said, gameplay variety and conceptual appeal are other big factors. (Along with if the character still has a future, but I take it you don't agree with that)
Your video doesn't really go into that outside of a few mentions.

I can see that maybe it isn't as important to you, but it is to plenty of people and it's important to be aware of that when people take issue with your video.
(Heck, to play Devil's Advocate, I've seen tons of people not wanting Aegis back cause they're considered just 'Sword Zelda & Sheik'. The latter just having Not-Bat Within (A hated mechanic among various Smash circles) being the most they have to stick out.

    - Part of Moresty's "we can have both!" did feel disconnected the idea of cutting rosters or struggles of game development. But IMO it traces back to you not establishing how many cuts you're going with.
Say "My goal is to keep 50 vets, so we can focus on other areas" or what-not.

Again, it feels more like meaning this 'roster decluttering' idea or just cutting them cause you personally don't like them. So I can see people getting lost/asking why they gotta go, even if it is to fit a game dev quota.

Yes - play Goemon as well. No, they're not lost to time - and genuinely, the continued old jokes are corny. You're three years younger than me and I'm engaging with your comments despite the obviously-intentional meanness of "hey, what do you think of this guy making fun of you for 6 hours straight?".

That being said, if you're approaching the video like a calm, normal person who realizes I'm being lighthearted and talking about video games, without the initial framing of a streamer looking to entertain his audience with the most overblown reactions to everything, the Minecraft section is fairly obvious: I reacted to it like zoomer brainrot at first (because hey, I am somewhat old), but really, Minecraft earned a spot, but still, keep actual brainrot out. It's pretty simple if you're engaging with what I'm saying with even the slightest degree of charitability.

As far as modern history being just as important as older history, again, this is a roundabout way of begging the question. Stuff happening now may, in fact, end up being just as important as old stuff - but it needs time to simmer and make that impact. Gaming as a medium is 50ish years old - yes, things that debuted 10 years or 15 years into that development process had a lot more potential to be foundational and influential. There were like...800 NES games. Now there's probably 800 games released every week on Steam. It's almost like, an inherent property of a developing artform that the earlier on something comes up, the higher potential it has to be recognizably influential. Not to mention that if number of games is a factor in legacy - it literally just takes time to hit some of these numbers that we have with unrepresented characters (Puyo, Bomberman, Goemon). Other artforms literally have time restraints before things can be inducted in their Hall Of Fame institutions etc. - it's pretty obvious that to even properly assess the influence of something you need to wait and see what it actually is. I personally think your version of Smash (delete the old, add the trendy) would quickly devolve into something no one would bother speculating about in terms of roster.

This is all without mentioning that I literally kept Minecraft, Splatoon, ARMS, and deleted tons of old characters as well - hell, the only 1st party IP i axed outside of Xenoblade was Ice Climber. Plus, there's newer characters that have earned a spot - Undertale clears that bar pretty easily and clearly isn't going anywhere, and I'd love a rep.

I literally said "just to warn you - there might be more characters in the trash bin than you initially expect" in the video, as well as my roster (with slots for newcomers) rounding out to like 70+ characters. I feel like, again, if you watch the video without the bad-faith reaction and framing, it's fairly obvious that I'm addressing this as best I can.

The idea of focusing on movesets is silly to me. We know Sakurai and the devteam are going to come up with a fun moveset and make the roster feel somewhat balanced and fun to play. This is where I get very dismissive, but, genuinely - they gave Piranha Plant a moveset that makes sense. If we extend the scope to fangames and stuff, I've played as a Mouse Cursor, a Tetromino...and it somehow made sense. I'm not too worried about this - unlike the roster size, movesets are literally only limited by your own creativity. Saying "but you can't cut this character, moveset variety!" when the roster i present at the end, again, has 70+ characters, feels like major cope. Most of the fighters have unique movesets or gimmicks of some kind.

I think I'm operating in reverse from a lot of the community. I kind of view it as blank-slate, a character has to affirmatively earn their spot - for most, they just want everything to stay the same and it has to be "proven" that there's a reason to get rid of them. This is probably why it feels like I'm decluttering - yes, I am. The roster has clutter.

I'm not bringing up the "You're old" comments to make fun of you, just trying to explain where people are coming from there. (Along with being curious what you thought of the 6 hour videos that brought eyes onto you)

I also don't intend to come in and give you crap over your video (it's part of the reason I didn't comment on your original video). If it came off that way, I apologize.
I honestly wanted to provide a fair standpoint.

Heck, as much as a I hate this term, I lean more towards the "Scrimblo" picks since they just interest me more. (Krystal, Dixie, Bandana Dee, Crash, Rayman, etc)
But I also play and beat Xenoblade 1. Loved it, am in no rush to play the others, will get to them one day.

I forgot to mention in the previous post, but it's not just what you say, but it's how you say it.
But to be honest, I get the impression you don't really care, and will just say what comes to mind without any consideration if it steps on any toes. Then complain when people don't like it: "If you watch the video without the bad-faith reaction and framing."

Anywho, I'm gonna take my leave.
    Hope you enjoy Xenoblade 1.
People have been calling me an old man on my Smash 6 video and while it is funny, it made me start thinking about how the vast majority of the "new" characters on the existing roster (depending on how you define "new") that aren't new franchise representatives are obligatory Pokemon & Fire Emblem from the latest entry at the time of release. Xenoblade is also becoming this way (people expecting or insisting upon a new character every single time) - and I don't really understand. With Pokemon as a good example - they choose a Pokemon to be the heavily marketed one of the new generation, it obligatorily gets added into Smash, and then people circularly use the fact that it's the most heavily marketed Pokemon (and subsequently the most popular) of that new time period to justify its Smash inclusion retroactively. That's whatever - just don't see how throwing in Bomberman or some other new franchise that undoubtedly has the chops wouldn't inherently be more interesting. Being against franchise bloat inherently skews the roster towards being predominantly older characters (which it already is about 2:1 anyway).
I was going to be heavily critical of your roster you posted in the main Smash thread, because there's definitely some baffling takes in it, but seeing how flat out toxic the comments section was towards you about it (not everyone criticizing it of course, but damn a substantial amount of it sure was) to the point where I don't even want to criticize it now. Hopefully the toxicity being sent your way isn't/ hasn't been too hurtful to you.

This post made my day - it only sucks because the video took a ton of effort and then I more or less got targeted hatred from (I'm assuming) Xenoblade fans early on (with like 30% of the early traffic coming from Discord servers and direct searches for my channel). I feel like even if people don't like my picks the video is jokey, light-hearted, high-effort and coming from a place of caring about the series - which made me really confused about the toxic nature of responses. I wasn't expecting agreement - I literally made my YouTube channel out of frustration with how much I disagree with much of the common Smash discourse - but there's a difference between disagreement and bile.

Having come across said video in a Discord server, though I had no idea you were active here; sorry to hear about all the toxicity in the comments. Kinda sucks that it's so necessary to frontload any remotely creative video with qualifiers like "this is just my personal opinion" so that people won't berate you for it... darn. I'm agreed with W3 on Classic Sonic being a cool pick, though. And, well, your Jack Bros. idea's something I'm a huge fan of. (Though, the Devil Buster seems cool too!)

Oh I would not be surprised if its primarily Xenoblade fans being toxic. Pretty consistently I've found them to be really toxic. This is an old memory that I can't quite remember the specifics of because it was a few years ago, so take it with a grain of salt, but iirc they even mass harassed Thaddeus Crews (NASB dev) on Twitter simply because he said XB2 was the worst one at one point.
