Both would be helpful, but if you're looking for likeable characters, I'd focus primarily on personality and tweak backstory later, if at all.

He makes up an excuse whenever he does something wrong (aka John).
He's cowardly, but not afraid to show it.
He's extremely defensive of his friends and sister.
He's pretty sarcastic and always makes puns, usually bad ones.

Looks interesting. Here, I think it's how you portray these traits. Fisk's defensiveness for his friends and family is a trait I think you should bring out a lot from him, as it could work well if you tie it into the backstory well.
