People have been calling me an old man on my Smash 6 video and while it is funny, it made me start thinking about how the vast majority of the "new" characters on the existing roster (depending on how you define "new") that aren't new franchise representatives are obligatory Pokemon & Fire Emblem from the latest entry at the time of release. Xenoblade is also becoming this way (people expecting or insisting upon a new character every single time) - and I don't really understand. With Pokemon as a good example - they choose a Pokemon to be the heavily marketed one of the new generation, it obligatorily gets added into Smash, and then people circularly use the fact that it's the most heavily marketed Pokemon (and subsequently the most popular) of that new time period to justify its Smash inclusion retroactively. That's whatever - just don't see how throwing in Bomberman or some other new franchise that undoubtedly has the chops wouldn't inherently be more interesting. Being against franchise bloat inherently skews the roster towards being predominantly older characters (which it already is about 2:1 anyway).
