There is a strong shield for GaW, it's just not practical to use. See when you are getting hit, and you're at a low enough percent you can DI downards and shield the move, but it doesn't help because his shield well....sucks. His shield is only good for 1-3 hits and then everything else breaches the shield and you get hit. The solution? Hold Z.
There is a varity when you use your shield, the harder you hold down L / R you get a very strong shield but it fades very fast, and you dont move anywhere when you block somthing, however the lighter you hold it the larger the shield becomes, and when you block an attack you slide farther. Now if you hold L / R for your shield, then hold Z, you will get a much larger shield that can potentially block more hits. I find this handy because well, the other shield just doesn't cut it. It covers most, or all, of GaW so you don't need to worry about a breach unless it wears down.
The problem with this shield is this. If you are holding just Z, you cannot grab with it. It's also less practical to be able to actually wavedash with it. You can still dodge with it, which can be helpful too.
I figured if you practice with it by using your normal shield with L / R, and holding Z at the same time, you should be able to block a few hits, let go of Z quick and attack or wavedash out of it. If you are holding L / R and Z for a shield, and then let go of Z you will switch back to the other shield.
Hope you find this helpful.
