Just as the title says, create a Fighters Pass to your heart’s content. The only rule is that Vol. 1 now has a 6th slot available. Here’s mine:

  2. Hero
  3. Banjo & Kazooie
  4. Pyra / Mythra
  5. Terry
  6. Crash

Vol. 2:
  1. Min Min
  2. Dr. Eggman
  3. Sephiroth
  4. Edelgard
  5. Kazuya
  6. Sora

Knowing me, I would probably have a nearly entirely different DLC selection if I could, so here's one that's somewhat recognizable to what we got.

Bonus: Toad

FP 1:
:ultjoker:
:ulthero:
Shadow (as a largely unique character and not a Sonic echo)
Midna & Wolf Link
:ult_terry:
Isaac

FP 2:
:ultminmin
:ultsteve:
:ultsephiroth:
Bandana Dee
Waluigi
:ultsora:

Since Toad's playable, the Toads in Peach and Daisy's would've been replaced with Toadsworth and Captain Toad respectively, and the Assist Trophy characters would've just not been ATs in Ultimate (maybe Shadow could've been replaced with Metal Sonic using a Time Stone from Sonic CD I guess).

I pretty much only wanted Steve. Some other characters I was just "might be cool, may play for a bit but I'd definitely go back to Steve." I'll just replace some of the DLC that I don't have fun playing as or against.

1st I'm going to replace Byleth, they are super annoying to fight and TBH we didn't need more Fire Emblem, I'd replace them with Boyfriend. He go beep boop IDK lol, I'd still play Steve probably lol. The 2nd to replace is Min-Min, obvious reasons, I'd replace them with Spider-Man, why not, my favorite superhero lol. Lastly, I'd replace Sephiroth, he can get away with special move spam a lot of the time (at least against Steve) and has a giant freaking sword, I'd replace him with Darth Vader, because why not lol.

it's all the funny miner girl

Okay, no, I'm actually going to try and be serious with this. For fun, I'm going to do two versions; One "rewriting" the FP1/FP2 characters we got, and another for "FP3 and 4", additional characters on top of the actual DLC picks.

Bonus Fighter: Waluigi (I don't see his Assist Trophy being a problem; We have Robin summoning Chrom to beat up Chrom. Plus, we can just have Waluigi in his tennis outfit to differentiate the two if need be.)

FP1:
  1. Joker
  2. Hero
  3. Byleth (decided to bump them back here to be closer to Three Houses' release)
  4. Terry
  5. Banjo
FP2:
  1. Sephiroth
  2. Min Min
  3. Steve
  4. Crash (he wouldn't have been acquired by Microsoft yet, so I'm not double dipping here)
  5. Rex (w/ Pyra/Mythra)
  6. Sora
FP3:
  1. Frisk
  2. Bandanna Waddle Dee
  3. Dr. Eggman
  4. Heavy (TF2)
  5. Doom Slayer
  6. Waluigi
FP4:
  1. Crash
  2. Master Chief
  3. Ghost Gang (Pac-Man)
  4. Dixie Kong
  5. Red
  6. Phoenix Wright

  4. Bandana Waddle Dee (Kirby)

I am not going to redo the current ones but just react as if we got another pass. I would do the following. I am going to try to think about options for Nintendo and not just for myself although I am adding 2-3 picks that I wanted and, frankly, and puzzled are missing.

1. Rayman - Probably the one character that I felt was missed the most.
2. Impa - I would go with her most recent adaption, probably themed after Hyrule Warriors II
3. New Generation Pokemon - I don't play it but acknowledge this would sell
4. Laura Croft - This character gets no love, even from fans, but most would agree this character is iconic and would be the first true FPS type character (although she is just as much adventure). Her series is also not as violent as Doom or Halo so less controversy
5. Ryu Hayabusa

This gets several characters that were missed and would be attractive to a lot of people. It maybe a little to Western-focused though.

I think this is a pretty interesting concept, and whilst I can see myself changing my mind on this over and over again, I may as well take a crack at it as is. I should note that the DLC picks I go with might have a little bias, but they'd also be focused on cross-promotion where possible. That said, I'd also like to avoid double-dipping into companies and genres where possible, at least in each pass. One more thing - no Assist Trophy promotions, for which I deeply apologise.

Bonus Fighter:
  • Tom Nook (Animal Crossing) - Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct (Released Jan. 29th, 2019)
Fighter's Pass One:
  • Reimu Hakurei (Touhou Project) - The Game Awards 2018 (Released Apr. 17th, 2019)
  • Qbby (BoxBoy!) - E3 2019 Direct (Released Jul. 30th, 2019)
  • Yoshimitsu (Tekken) - E3 2019 Direct (Released Sep. 4th, 2019)
  • Jason Frudnick (Blaster Master Zero) - September 2019 Nintendo Direct (Released Nov. 6th, 2019)
  • Slime - Mr. Sakurai Presents (Released Jan. 28th, 2020)
Fighter's Pass Two:
  • Edelgard (Fire Emblem: Three Houses) - March 2020 Nintendo Direct Mini (Released Jun. 29th, 2020)
  • Iori Yagami (The King of Fighters) - Mr. Sakurai Presents (Released Oct. 13th, 2020)
  • Rex (Xenoblade Chronicles 2) - The Game Awards 2020 (Released Dec. 22nd, 2020)
  • Demi-Fiend (Shin Megami Tensei) - Feburary 2021 Nintendo Direct (Released Mar. 4th, 2021)
  • Neku Sakuraba (The World Ends With You) - E3 2021 Direct (Released Jun. 29th, 2021)
  • Arle Nadja (Puyo Puyo) - Final Mr. Sakurai Presents (Released Oct. 18th, 2021)
This might seem like a somewhat eclectic mix, so I'll provide some notes and explanations below.

  • In each Fighter's Pass, each character is deliberately intended to represent a different genre of video games, allowing for a wider breadth of representation and hopefully stifling concerns that there's too much focus on one given genre. A common criticism of the original DLC was that there was a bias toward JRPGs, so I hope to alleviate those concerns with this lineup.
    • Tom Nook represents life/social simulation games through the Animal Crossing series.
    • Reimu Hakurei primarily represents shoot-em-ups through the Touhou Project series.
    • Qbby represents puzzle games through the BoxBoy! series.
    • Yoshimitsu represents the fighting game genre through the Tekken series.
    • Jason Frudnick represents both platformers and dungeon crawlers through the Blaster Master series!
    • Slime represents traditional, turn-based RPGs as well as JRPGs through the iconic Dragon Quest series.
  • For the second Pass:
    • Edelgard is a rep for strategy games specifically, though technically turn-based RPGs on top of that.
    • Iori Yagami is another fighting game rep, this time for the 2D genre.
    • Arle Nadja is another puzzle game rep.
    • Demi-Fiend represents turn-based RPGs again.
    • Neku Sakuraba represents action-RPGs in a sense, as well as being another closer callback to Nintendo's history.
  • I also didn't want to double-dip into third-party companies where possible, though did end up double-dipping into Nintendo... sort of.
    • The Animal Crossing series is first-party, through Nintendo.
    • The Touhou Project series is handled by Team Shanghai Alice, formely ZUNSoft.
    • The BoxBoy! series is ostensibly first-party, but handled by HAL Labs instead of Nintendo.
    • The Tekken series is owned by Bandai-Namco, giving them their second character after PAC-MAN.
    • The Blaster Master series is owned by Sunsoft, but the Zero series was made by Inti Creates.
    • The Dragon Quest series is owned by Square-Enix, giving them their second character after Cloud.
    • The Fire Emblem series is also first-party, though has traditionally been handled by Intelligent Systems.
    • The The King of Fighters series is owned by SNK, being their first in the Smash series.
    • The Puyo Puyo series is owned by SEGA, giving them technically their third character after Sonic and Bayonetta.
    • The Shin Megami Tensei series is owned by ATLUS, who are a SEGA subsidiary, but market under their own brand.
    • The The World Ends With You series is owned by Square-Enix, but is different enough to their other work to feel unique.

  • Whilst I do think Pirahna Plant is a fantastic inclusion who makes a lot of sense despite being inherently weird and fun, I'm replacing him with Tom Nook partially as promotion for the Animal Crossing series as a whole - as well as for the opportunity to include a new style of moveset beyond just Isabelle's take on Villager's kit. He'd also be a pretty surprising character, especially if we present him (in the trailer, at least) as some sort of villain!
    • I think the differences between Isabelle and Villager are enough to warrant them being classified as seperate fighters, but Tom Nook could easily have a much more unique moveset that implements a bell mechanic of some sort.
    • Not only this, but Tom Nook can jokingly fit into the similar "heroes vs. villains" concept that a lot of the release trailers had going on, similarly to K. Rool's reveal trailer featuring shots of Mario vs. Bowser, Link & Zelda vs. Ganondorf, Kirby vs. Meta Knight, Fox & Falco vs. Wolf and Samus vs. Ridley. The idea of Tom Nook being a "villainous" force seems like it'd work well for comedy.
  • Not only this, but I'd argue a third Animal Crossing rep - especially a reoccuring character from as far back as the very first game - kind of makes sense to include at this point, and Tom Nook is in a weirdly unique position in that he, similarly to Roy, first appeared outside of Japan in the Smash series! (His trophy appeared in Melee before the release of Animal Crossing on the Gamecube.)

  • Given Joker's reception as an incredibly surprising but fun inclusion, I wanted to keep an aura of shock around the first DLC character, whilst going with someone who also kind of makes perfect sense. Reimu, on that front, is the protagonist of a really popular shoot-em-up series with plenty of spinoffs, is a fan-favourite character amongst Japanese markets, and also represents a genre we've not yet really seen in the Smash series!
    • I considered potentially including a different character who's also a fan-favourite - namely Marisa - but Reimu's prominence as the series' de-facto mascot makes a lot of sense as a good reason to include her specifically.
  • Similarly to the Persona series, the Touhou series might not have had a massively prominent history with Nintendo specifically, but is still a pretty important element of the history of video games in general. Not only this, but a couple of games in the series would later release on Switch anyway.
  • As you can imagine, she'd also be a floaty, aerially adept zoner with a variety of decently powerful tools. I think the Smash Infinite thread did a good job of conceptualising how she'd look, so check it out!

  • Qbby's design is recontextualised into 3D in this game, though maintains a simplistic appearance to keep with the spirit of his games. His different alts give him different hats, with one of his alts changing his appearance to resemble that of Qucy.
  • He's here mostly as promotion for the entire BoxBoy! series, which up until 2019 had been 3DS-exclusive. Unlike Pushmo, though, the newest game in the series - BoxBoy! + BoxGirl! - was released on the Switch in 2019, making his Smash inclusion cross-promotion for that title.
  • As a first-party inclusion, the decision to place him alongside Yoshimitsu in the E3 Direct is intentional so as to maintain "hype" for the DLC going forward. Whilst Qbby might not be as well-known of a character outside of the Nintendo circle of fans, his placement here means that his series will get more recognition overall!

  • The decision to go with Yoshimitsu as opposed to a more prominent, main character - like Heihachi, Jin or Kazuya - is because of our ability to use Yoshimitsu to represent both the Tekken and SoulCalibur series in terms of music and Spirits. Not only this, but Yoshimitsu is a reoccuring character throughout the Tekken series who's become somewhat of a fan-favourite, so they're not completely unreasonable either.
    • As such, music from both the Tekken and Soul series is brought in alongside Yoshimitsu, giving him an incredibly healthy tracklist! On top of this, he's also got Spirits featuring characters from both series.
    • He's also chosen due to having a lot of moves that would make pretty obvious sense to bring into Smash, such as a recovery in the form of Manji Dragonfly, and access to a variety of sword attacks that would be mechanically unique compared to other sword wielders due to his fighting game mechanics and unique fighting style.
  • Yoshimitsu is well-known for featuring a variety of costumes and designs throughout the Tekken series, though this time around, he'd only have two. His default appearance is based on his Tekken 7 look, but he has an equal number of alts featuring his "classic" Tekken 3 appearance, which has also appeared in games like Tekken Tag Tournament and Street Fighter X Tekken.
    • On top of this, one of his alts is deliberately coloured to appear akin to Taiya no Kagekiyo, the protagonist from another Namco series - Getsu Fuma Den. Given this character was one of his original inspirations in the first Tekken, and maintains a degree of popularity in Japan, it makes a lot of sense in my mind.

  • Despite each game in the Zero series giving Jason, and by extension SOPHIA III, new designs due to plot occurrences, Jason's default appearance is a unique one that acts as a fusion of elements from the entire series put together. Obviously, Smash isn't treated as canon to the series or vice versa.
  • Half of Jason's alts replace him with Kane Gardner, the original protagonist of the Blaster Master series appearing as far back as MetaFight, but in his Blaster Master Zero 3 design.
    • These change his voicelines, the appearance of Fred in his taunts, and his Final Smash cutscene, but have no gameplay differences.
  • Jason's moveset doesn't include SOPHIA III by default, with it instead being based on the dungeon-crawling elements of gameplay so as to better fit him into the Smash series. However, SOPHIA III is called in for his Final Smash, in which it's piloted by Eve. Notably, this version appears more akin to the modern redesign seen in the Zero series.
    • If you're playing as Kane, he'll instead call in the classic variant of SOPHIA III, known as the Metal Attacker. It's not piloted by Eve due to her not existing in the older games, and is instead piloted by... Fred?
  • Akin to Terry's music list in the real world, Jason brings music from both the Blaster Master franchise and from Sunsoft's work as a whole, with a focus on their Nintendo projects (games like Journey to Silius, Mr. Gimmick and Ufouria.) Whilst the music list is focused on the Blaster Master series, I think representing a wider lens on Sunsoft would work well for him.
    • I couldn't really justify the same treatment for Inti Creates as a whole, but I do think it'd make sense to include Jason's secret battle theme from Luminous Avenger iX 2, or even his encounter theme, given both are remixes of songs from Blaster Master Zero 3.
    • This element sort of ties into Jason being the de-facto "retro rep" amongst the group, given his series' origins on the NES, in addition to having modern relevance. Best of both worlds, really!

  • I felt that a Dragon Quest rep made too much sense to not include, and given that Dragon Quest XI released in September 2019 for the Switch, it made sense to include a character from the series. However, given the series' popularity and longetivity, I felt it'd make sense to represent it through one of the few continual strands that have lasted from the very beginning - Slime!
  • As an RPG rep, it made sense to me to finally include a "mook" of some sort, and Slime - being a typically weak character with a massive number of variants and different appearances - made a lot of sense to bring in. That being said, Slime's moveset would result in this Slime being a sort of composite of all kinds of Slime from throughout the Dragon Quest series, which I think would work to represent it as a whole beyond just "it has magic" and "there is MP in the series".
  • Though Slime is intended as cross-promotion for Dragon Quest XI, it's unique in that it brings music and representation from across the series... with the "caveat" being that many of its Spirits are also minor enemies from the franchise. I think it'd work well to have a Hero of some sort (whether it be Erdrick, the Luminary, or someone else entirely) as a Four Star Spirit, representing how scary a Hero must be to a mere Slime.

  • I felt that a Fire Emblem: Three Houses rep was a good and almost necessary idea, but given the Smashseries' propensity to represent the series with main protagonists, Edelgard would be a good change of pace both in terms of moveset, design, and appeal.
    • In addition, the marketing for Three Houses centred its focus on Edelgard, Dimitri and Claude, so it's not too unprecedented to include one of them over the player character.
    • Edelgard is also a fan-favourite character with a lot of plot significance, so her inclusion would read less like a purely promotional decision and more akin to a pick for the fans.
    • Claude and Dimitri would of course still be represented elsewhere, in Spirits, stage cameos, and even alternate costumes.
  • As for why I moved the Three Houses rep forward, the reasons are twofold. Firstly, finishing the first Fighter's Pass with a Fire Emblem character was seen as an unpopular move by many, so starting the second pass with one makes a little more sense. Secondly, it allows us to cross-promote Three Houses's DLC!
  • Edelgard's moveset would centre around her axe, and although her design would feature her default look, some of her abilities would be inspired by her later title as the Flame Emperor - imbuing her axe with fire for some of her attacks. She's generally got a lot of more powerful strikes across the board.

  • Iori might seem like a strange pick compared to Terry or Kyo at first, but I think he makes a lot of sense. He's crossed over on multiple occasions within and outside of SNK's work, is a central character in the The King of Fighters series and has been directly linked to several overarching storylines, and is a fan-favourite character who seems to genuinely be beloved by the majority of the fanbase for the series.
  • He's also pretty unique in that he's basically had the same moves for most of his existence, allowing him to be fairly easy to represent on a wider level without having to cram in additional moves to make him work. Plus, the Smash series' method of handling fighting game characters would work well for him given he's from another 2D series akin to Street Fighter.
  • Side note, but I'd personally really like "Miss X" to be his 8th costume. The Heroines series is a pretty cool one to represent and it'd be cool to see it.

  • Whilst a moveset involving Rex fighting alongside Pyra or Mythra isn't possible due to the limitations of the Switch's hardware, my concept here is that Rex simply fights with their blades - being able to perform Aegis Switch with Down B, which gives him different specials and properties. As such, Pyra or Mythra would only appear themselves in his taunt or his Final Smash. This would (hopefully!) allow him to actually be possible in this context.
  • I felt a representative for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 would be kind of necessary, and whilst I love Pyra/Mythra, I think this makes more sense given he's a protagonist for the series.
  • He'd also bring a few music tracks from other Xenoblade media. Yes. Even Xenoblade Chronicles X.
  • The bonus Rex costume from the first Fighter's Pass would, as a result of this, be replaced. As for what with... I'm not really sure. Maybe the Ring Fit Trainer?

  • The choice to go with Demi-Fiend over, say, Joker, Yu or Jack Frost, boiled down to the then-recent release of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster, as well as the upcoming release of Shin Megami Tensei V. Funny how only a couple of years can change the landscape of speculation for a company, huh?
  • As such, Demi-Fiend's representation is cented squarely on Shin Megami Tensei, with no representation from spinoff media such as Persona, Soul Hackers or Devil Summoner. However, he brings with him music and Spirits from across the series, including games like Shin Megami Tensei If...?.
  • As an ATLUS rep, he's technically our second SEGA-aligned character, but I think he's warranted given the prominence of Arle and the seperation that ATLUS actually has from SEGA as a brand. I wanted to avoid double-dipping too much, but this instance hardly counts in my mind.

  • Given the 2021 release of NEO: The World Ends With You and Square-Enix's big push to market the series in preparation (especially with the anime!), plus the history of releases of TWEWY content on Nintendo platforms (such as the original game being a DS exclusive), Neku actually makes some sense for this sort of time period.
  • His design will, however, be based on the first game, with no elements from NEO being brought into his moveset. This includes his appearance in NEO as an alternate costume, which isn't here for spoiler reasons. That said, there's more than enough to give him a varied moveset overall.
  • It's also possible for some of Neku's music to be from other content, like the Kingdom Hearts remixes of TWEWY tracks or even a few tracks from NEO. It'd predominantly be focused on the first game and its rereleases, however.
  • Whilst the decision to go with two Square-Enix characters might come across as a little odd, I think it's justified. Both Slime and Neku work well as promotion for an upcoming release, both are pretty popular fan-favourites in different ways, and both would do a good job at helping to alleviate some of the bad press that Square-Enix might be getting at the moment.

  • Arle's the protagonist of the long-lasting Puyo Puyo series, a SEGA puzzle game franchise that's effectively gone from strength to strength over the years. It makes a lot of sense to represent here as a second SEGA series beyond just Sonic, and it'd also be nice to see another puzzle rep. Plus... another promotional pick, this time for Puyo Puyo Tetris!
  • In terms of design, she'd use her modern appearance but in 3D form, just so she can keep up with the rest of the cast. I'd imagine her design would allow her to use magic beyond just the Puyos, though, more similar to her Madou Monogatari incarnation. (Now it might be a little more obvious why I replaced Hero?)
  • Whilst she doesn't have the same "legendary" status as, say, Sora, I think she's warranted as the last pick due to her continuing prominence and popularity. Plus, she can have like one track from Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine and that'll break the internet instead of like, Steve.

Looking at this, I'm not 100% how I feel about the second season. I might come back to this at some point
