Defensive Sheik

Recently I've been playing some new people in smash with my Sheik and even though I try not to be all out offence I do seem to favor that.... Unfortunately when I was playing these new people CF, Falco, and Samus there offence game was better then mine and I even got two stocked a few times.

What really worried me is that when I switch to my Zelda (my current 2nd) I never lost.

Can anyone give me some advice to play Sheik less aggressively besides throwing needles every two seconds and wave dashing/dash dancing around?

people dont know how to play zelda and know how to play sheik.

that is my guess

and i think sheik is best when on an all out rageing offensive

Yes I agree with you As_Money but in time when your recovering or against a raging Falco then you must know how to play a at least a decent defensive game.

well, you cannot go all out aggro against falco, b/c his offense is greater than sheik's. You shouldn't have trouble w/Falcon; just needle him so he can't dd camp/charge you. Sheik absoutely destroys C.Falcon.

shielding works :)

really, against falcon all of his really aggressive attacks involve being right next to you. All it takes is not getting hit. For example, if they are good at L-canceling to grabs, then shield, WD backwards out and do something... needles work, especially when you are jumping at him, as it forces him to shield, and then he loses momentum...

Samus is slow; you shouldn't be having that much problem with her. Just shield the missiles, and don't use weak ground attacks, as Samus' CC/CCC is really nice. Needles are much more usable, as she is slower than falco and falcon.

I have never played a decent falcon with sheik (I mainly use Doc. Mario), but sheik's grabs abd f-air +egeguarding shuld make this match doable, right?

I think your problem is that you play these unknown people in th same style you play people you know. You don't read them well (because you don't know how they play) and thus when they see how YOU fight, they capitalize on your weaknesses.

i diagree with the all out offense..you should worry more about playing msart than playing like a fast cuhrazee beast...you will get abused if you play to fast and the opponent will outsmart u..if the opponent is decent that is...anyway...u asked how to play less agrresive...easy...instead of running in...spam needles to make them come to you...when they do..try to outmaneuver them via wavedashing, waveladning from a short hop or full jump, or just some trivky aerial maneuvers and hit them as they come in...the key to playing les agrressive is having very good mindgames to make up for the lack of aggresiion...peace

Shiek really does need to be offensive >_>..Of course you need to play smart while being offensive but make sure to always be pressuring your opponent with needle storms, jabs, tilts, grabs and the works.

That's pretty good, already. I'd say jumping, charging needles, canceling, as it may confuse them. SHing all over the place, shffling moves away from them, etc. Then when they come, dodge, and grab/tilt/do whatever.

ok i definitely have to agree with the majority here sheik definitely needs to be all out aggressive. unless your playing a marth or something where you need to SEMI defensive. which means needle the **** out of them

A defensive sheik can really throw people off though. I played a mirror match with someone and i couldn't land very many hits on him. he played mostly defense and i played more offense. and because of that match i'm looking into improving my defensive techniques.

The jab move is faster than most other attacks and can mess up your opponent's combo, or add to your own. I also agree with King Leonidas who mentioned canceling needles in the air to fool with people.

just play really smart, you also have to no how to play against a falcon, falco etc etc.
look at all there techs.
watch carefully.
all there moves, and you should no what they will be doing.

on the all out offense, not a good idea.
there is no such thing as all offense on a good player.
if you play with mindgames via WD/DD
wavelanding
shielding
dodgeing
etc etc.
keep your offense going,
sheik combos into almost every move,

JUST play SMART =D

Needles is the best B move in the game too me, use them to your advantage, when you spam needles you force your ooponent to shield, jump, crouch (if they can)
and it opens weakness.
capatalize on that.

Power shielding also works, if you dont really now how to get the timeing down, take a friend and make him use falco, samus
and practice it.

good luck too you!

Yeah, I agree with most of the people here, shiek needs to be played offensively. Just use mind games with them until you get some good oppertunites then go destroy him. But honestly, just play smart and pressuring offense the whole time and you will be fine.

Maybe it was just the video I watched but you looked pretty offensive. Occasionly you would shield and wait for him to come down on you and grab him, but you were doing very well by staying on the offense from what I saw.
Defensive for shiek is probably considered offensive for some other players though. And since your an experienced shiek player, you could easily pull off defensive and offensive, but generally I would say offensive is the way to go.

Okay, how about.. Wait around, watch your opponent, when you see an opening, punish. Try to leave as little openings as possible, and to punish him right when he leaves himself open. Falco will leave himself open frequently, say when they shffl at you and you wavedash back. Ta-da~.

Within 8,000 miles of you, unless you're in space.
TO summarize Ijuka's post: play a game where you focus a lot on punishment. I agree that this is a really good defensive stradegy, and not just for Sheik (Luigi almost HAS to play like this).

What I'd say is:
Needle a lot
Punish a lot
Do confusing things (WD, etc.) constantly
Most Important: Play smart!

Some of what everyone has said has help but after looking into the matter more closely I've found that if I charge up my needle and wait for them to come I can force them to come at me from the air. Once they are there I can choose to tilt them away or counter them with a SHFFLC. If however they do come in for a grab/attack then I can to jump into the offensive to knock them off balance or evade there coming attack.

Of course this works beside without platforms but I wont know for sure that it works well on CF, Falco and Samus for a few weeks.

But god does it ever beats the hell out of defensive Marths. ^-^
