Ok, so I just got my friend a copy of SSBM, and I wanna teach him to play Shiek first. What is the best way to teach him to play competitively, including advanced techniques and all?

Don't teach advanced techniques first, especially for a character like Sheik. Teach him the basics of the game and the basics of Sheik (ftilt --> fair, dthrow --> ftilt, etc.). Advanced techniques will only confuse your friend at this point.

Ok, so how long with this before advanced techs? How good does he need to be at comboing and what should I tell him about mindgames if anything?

Teach him the basics: teching, shielding properly, rolling, and whatever. Advanced techs come along when he (or you) feels that he can't improve his game without them.

So would teaching him to approache with something other than the dash attack fall under advanced or basic? Also, he has a very hard time short hopping, is there anything I should say to help or is that something advanced as well?

Short hopping with sheik is very hard to do. The best way that i've found to do it is to quickly slide my finger off the jump button. definitely teach him how to approach w/o the dash attack; it's best if he just never develops the habit of spamming that move. Also, make sure he knows how to use grabs effectively. I'd even argue that boost grabs and JC grabs are worth teaching him in the early stages because they're relatively easy to do and good habits to have. Basically make sure he gets the fundamental stuff that many noobs have troubles with, like useing the c-stick. Hope this helps

Yeah, that helps. If there's anything else specific that needs to be taught early on, please let me know. I want him to be playing competitively with me eventually and I need to know the best way to do it, so all suggestions are appreciated.

Actually, I would expose to as much as you can, granted he has a serious interest. If you expose him to advanced techs now, he'll take to them faster, and be more fluid of a player in the end. I would show him Wak's how to play videos, show him these boards, and give him a few names of some pro players that he could benefit from watching so he can develop good habits early on.

sometimes people who try things and can't do it at all get frustrated and quit. take it one step at a time. also, i know you want to teach him sheik, but I don't believe in having someone choose a character for you. I think he needs to try out every character and see what he likes. many people (including myself) don't like the fast style of sheik. furthermore, unless your maining Sheik, he's not a good character to start with. I think if your going to choose a character for him to train with, choose one that is basic and can easily maneuver techniques, including the advanced ones. choose someone like Roy, Marth, ICs, Luigi, Mario, or Doc. Sheik is a little too easy to use and when he wants to swich the adjustment would be too large for him.

Knee, I have exposed him to as much as I can, but the most I get to see him is once a week to work with him on this. Regardless, I show him what I think a good Sheik needs to do to be competitive every time, just making sure it wasn't too much (it may just depend on him). I've shown him the advanced vid but didn't give him the name, and I need to show him the boards. Hand, I jsut figured if he could do everything well with Sheik, then it would be easier to pick up another character. I will ask him now if he wants to switch. Anyone think anything else I should do?

Mass exposure is the best way to learn. I know I wasn't always a Falco main. A lot of the time, it was well made combo videos that got me to try new characters and techniques. I'd suggest the same for him, and anyone else for that matter. And even if you don't get to see him more than once a week, I'm sure he can learn an incredible amount on his own. Perhaps not mind games, but he can certainly solidify his needed technical skills.

Alright, yeah, that sounds pretty good. I'll work on this with him. Good comments, and anyone that agrees or disagrees or has any suggestions, lemme know.

I see knee's point, but I think you can't squeeze everything in at once. you may show him vids, but teach one thing at a time. MOST IMPORTANT, don't pressure him. if you show him it all at once and tell him to do it, he'll quit. like knee said, expose him to everything, and then make him do i one at a time.

boost grab: when running, press A to do a dash attack, then immediately cancel with the grab. if done right you should briefly see the dash attack animation into a grab.

jump cancel grab: when running, jump and immediately cancel into a grab. if done right sheik should do the same grab animation she does when she is standing still and not running.
