Speaking of rumors, how likely do you guys think we’ll get another Grinch Leak?
The Grinch Leak was a massive case of "too good to be true". It came right as pessimism spread throughout the Smash fandom that Ken and Incineroar would be the only remaining base roster newcomers, and then this rumor comes around that was basically designed to make people excited about the game. It predicted that there would be seven additional newcomers, those being major fan favorites like Geno, Banjo & Kazooie, and Isaac, two obvious Echo inclusions in Ken and Shadow, the Chorus Kids, who were the final remaining characters implicated in the infamous Gematsu Leak who hadn't been added to the game yet and were thus heavily implied to be scrapped from Smash 4 during development, and finally Mach Rider, who fit in the role of the "retro surprise pick" that each game has had since Melee with Melee having the Ice Climbers and Mr. Game & Watch, Brawl having Pit and R.O.B., and Smash 4 having Duck Hunt. The leaked image of the full roster was even placed alongside what appeared to be marketing material for the then upcoming movie The Grinch, which only added legitimacy points to the rumor. I think something else could come along to strike the same level of impact that the Grinch Leak had in October of 2018, but I don't know.

It could be that the leak also had subliminal messages hidden in the words that made it sold more to hungry customers.....

Something that really grinds my gears is how often people use "rumor" and "leak" interchangeably in the Smash community.

A baseless post on 4chan claiming to know the exact characters and release date of the next game isn't a "leak".
It's a rumor, and an extremely flimsy one at that.

Like, come on people. It's not that hard.

Another Grinch leak precisely? No. That was a perfect storm of different elements all happening at the same time.

A big leak that impacts the fandom on a similar scale? Perhaps.
It needs coinicidences, timing, highly requested characters, and/or believable snapshots with creativity to create the perfect false truth.
We could laugh at the idea......

Exactly. The fact that Ridley and King K. Rool, who were longtime fan requests, managed to finally get in and Sakurai directly stated that Chrom and Dark Samus's additions as Echo Fighters were the direct result of fan demand made the prospect of a roster that had that much fanservice much more plausible.

And look what happened when the final smash trailer gave them instead what the Grinch leak promised....

As I mentioned earlier, that was the very pessimistic scenario that the community dreaded would happen for much of the back half of Ultimate's prerelease hype cycle, and was ultimately why many people fell for the "Grinch Leak". They wanted any reprieve from the possibility of this pessimistic scenario happening.

True. But every now and then, there is always a chance that people will be suckered into a false truth if conditions are right. For now, hype is just small embers waiting to be rekindled.

I think it coooould be teased/announced this year? It depends on how they wanna do marketing, because the Wii U came out in November 2012 and then they announced Smash 4 at E3 2013, then marketing went on until it released in September 2014.

So like if we're doing the Dojo way for veterans and just marketing newcomers, I could see it taking longer than Ultimate especially if there's a more typical number of newcomers this time around? So I could see it announced this year just because of that. I wouldn't expect it until later in the year though.

watch me be wrong and the Switch 2 Direct or like the Summer Direct we usually have in June has something for it lol
You know, I just thought: Smash 4’s DLC era ended in 2016 and Ultimate was revealed in 2018, two years after, right? Well, given how much time it takes to make a game and assuming Sakurai’s pitched game doesn’t interfere with this, it has been about three years since Ultimate’s DLC cycle ended, so I think what you said is a possibility.

I always thought that the “Grinch Leak” was too good to be true.

Also the lack of any new Pokemon in that “Grinch Hoax” was a weird outlier.

I thought so too. The announcement of one final newcomer trailer in November 2018 killed it for me because I didn't know how they could fit 5 newcomer trailers into one direct.

Just bringing something up, indie characters started to be a part of Smash Bros since Brawl, but in small pieces as trophies (Commander Video from Runner series started the seed). For Ultimate, they appeared as Assist Trophy, Spirits and Mii Costumes. I do believe some has a shot to become playable for the next game. The roadblock depends on how the selected Indie Character(s) are with their creators, requests, and Sakurai's radar.

At this point in time, who still holds?

I feel like Undertale has a chance or at least more than just a Mii Costume. The game’s reputation (especially in 2015-7) is why it’s not taken as seriously.

Steve technically counts because he was originally indie but Mojang was later bought. Since they are listed separately in Smash’s title credits unlike Rare (isn’t listed at all), it is still possible that Steve would have been in Smash if Mojang remained independent.

I think those kinds of credits work differently. After all despite being the same exact company Creatures Inc. and Ape Inc. are given separate credits.

How many times are we going to get the same damn 4chan fake leak from the 19th posted goddamn.

There's been like at least two more fakes from 4chan since and idiot news sites aren't covering those. .....at least not yet. But they might.
Can you share them here too? I do enjoy pointing out how fake some of these leaks can get...

I don’t see Indie characters ever happening if I’m being brutally honest, the very fact that Shantae as a spirit, Shovel Knight as an assist and Sans as Mii outfits were seen as honors to their respective creators/studios means that getting your own character into Smash as a playable fighter is in a much higher and difficult league of it’s own, mainstream/company owned characters just take higher priority and they have the money to negotiate for Smash unlike these creators.

Steve got a pass because it’s mother freaking Minecraft.

A million dollar phenomenon that’s the highest selling video game of all time, you’d be ridiculed to consider such an IP as “indie” in 2025, it’s more mainstream then 80% of the franchises represented in Smash already.

I just want a fake leak to get some traction that has some of my most wanted characters so it causes people to actually pay attention to them and talk about them :094:

Solo Charizard should be Pokemon Trainer's Echo.
Couldn’t you just pick Pokemon Trainer and choose not to transform? A solo Charizard echo seems pretty pointless.

IF the next Smash decided to condense the spec cycle into a shorter period like Ult's, but still had a larger number of newcomers, maybe that would give us a slight chance of a "blowout" trailer with multiple newcomers. I still wouldn't expect it, even in the detailed scenario, but if there's any chance of such a thing at all maybe that's it.

This one has a secret code in it to prove it's bait, but they ****ed up and added another "is" lol.

This one doesn't even try to pretend it isn't real, but still one that exists for news sites to spin as real lol.

And see your favorite characters get brushed away when the leak gets debunked? Trust me, no you don't; I know from experience.
Eh, that’s already happened with Gengar before. I think there was a decently discussed fake leak for Ultimate that had Gengar on it back in the day. At least it gave some people a reason to entertain the idea of it in Smash for a bit. Most of my favorites are never discussed in the first place so at least that would give them something. I get what you’re saying though.

Hey there's a thought, how would people feel if Toon Link was updated to Toy Link, but was still called and treated as Toon Link
I feel like it could happen since Link’s Awakening on Switch released in 2019 so there wouldn’t be development overlap.

Not sure if that design will remain consistent or if it will remain exclusive to LA and EoW.

Unless he's an alt then I'd rather just see Wind Waker Link as Toon Link lol

I mean he's even called Toon Link in Hyrule Warriors as far as I know, so it'd be weird if that name suddenly went to a different style of the character like Toy Link.

I have nothing to say regarding the leak conversation.

I just want you to know that Machamp taking a knee and dabbing is really funny to me for some reason. I don't even know why.

Thank you, I love/hate it.

As long as the next Smash has Crash Bandicoot, I don't care who else is in it tbh. Him and Master Chief Rayman were the only 2 3rd party characters I think were truly missing from Ultimate. For 1st parties, the only ones that were MIA for me personally were Dixie Kong and Waluigi Bandana Dee.

I'll go ahead and put my top 10 most wanted 3rd/1st party characters here so I don't have to again.

3rd Party
1. Rayman
2. Master Chief
3. Another Sonic character (sheesh) My pick would be Tails
4. Ryu Hayabusa
5. Geno
6. Scorpion/Subzero (giving us MK x SF since Capcom won't)
7. Spyro
8. Agumon (giving us Pokemon x Digimon)
9. Lara Croft or James Bond N64 would be hilarious
10. Bomberman or Lloyd Irving ig

1st Party
1. Dixie Kong
2. Bandana Dee
3. Waluigi
4. Isaac
5. Impa or Skull Kid whichever
6. Toad.. Give Toad his own spot damnit..
7. Prof Oak/Gary/Giovanni/another PKMN Trainer with 3 different types
8. Paper Mario
9. Krystal
10. Anything other than more Fire Emblem... :/ I'm sure that PTSD will kick back in the day this game gets officially announced.

I'll add Echo Fighters down here as I don't really mind which get added. I don't consider these full on additions either as they are undoubtedly less work, which is why I'm keeping them separate from the lists above.

Echo Fighters
1. Shadow (Sonic)
2. Ms Pacman
3. Funky Kong (DK)
4. Black Shadow (Captain Falcon)
5. Different PKMN Trainer if they don't do a completely new one (lot of potential there)
6. Birdo/Boshi (Yoshi) Either of these 2
7. Globox Felix (assuming we get Rayman Isaac ofc)
8. Akuma (Ryu)
9. Black Knight (Ike) The only addition I wouldn't hold against FE
10. Protoman/Roll (Megaman) Either is fine

I'd much rather they give him a different name. They didn't call Toon Link Young Link despite both being made to fill the same role of a younger Link, so i don't think Toy Link should take his predecessors' name either even if he's meant to succeed them in their role.
