A surprise third-party is definitely possible. They'd just have to add someone from a game that was well-received, but not as well-received/popular as other games. As far as why the character would be added.....maybe they'd have really unique moveset potential. Or maybe the devs just played their game and liked it.

Who is the most likely Final Fantasy character excluding FF7.

As far as broad appeal, I'm thinking Vivi, Terra, or a FFX inclusion of either Yuna or Tidus. All stand out from some well known entries in the series and embody particularly beloved titles (Terra), are incredibly well liked even by those lukewarm on the game (Vivi) or both (Tidus/Yuna).

Does Genshin Impact have a singular standout character that would be an obvious Smash choice or are the characters all on a more or less even field? I’ve never played the game but I know it’s pretty huge. That’s one thing that’s pointing me towards Jinx. I think Arcane did a lot to endear her to a ton of fans as a character much more than just being a popular champion from her home game would have.

Aether/Lumine. They're twins. It's a similar situation to Astral Chain where you can pick one at the start of the game and the other one will be a NPC. Whoever you pick will be the main character of the story.

I could see them having a fun moveset if they got in. A big part of Genshin's combat focuses on Elemental Reactions. For example, attacking an enemy with a Pyro attack while it's wet causes a Melt Reaction and a big increase in damage. Aether/Lumine have the ability to change elements. I could see their Smash gimmick being that chaining their elemental attacks together causes different reactions depending on the elements used.

I know we all have different priorities but one thing I really about Jinx is that she’s a fully fleshed out character that a lot of people genuinely love separate from just serving as a rep for her game. I think it says a lot that she became one of my favorite characters ever despite never playing League of Legends. That’s why I personally don’t have as much interest in avatar characters. To me, they feel more like reps of the games they’re from than their own individual character that resonates with people in a deeper way. There’s nothing wrong with having different priorities though. If you want a character because you loved their game and don’t care whether they have a unique personality or not, that’s just as valid. It’s just not what I personally put the most value in.

I don't think the sheer shock of Joker will ever be recreated, honestly. At this point everything is seen as worth consideration, no matter how out there. Even if someone is seen as unlikely, all the really big candidates aren't seen as impossible anymore.

And it only happened to begin with because Persona is a series that's much more associated with Sony than Nintendo. As a result Persona was never even brought up in discussion. If an Atlus rep was talked about the community looked towards Shin Megami Tensei instead, which has a far greater connection with Nintendo. So it's just another case of a character not being talked about much in the community because they don't have a good enough connection with Nintendo.

If an Atlus rep was talked about the community looked towards Shin Megami Tensei instead, which has a far greater connection with Nintendo. Depends on how you see it.

If you prefer FF’s history with Nintendo consoles, probably Terra from Final Fantasy 6, or perhaps the Warrior(s) of Light from Final Fantasy 1.

If you prefer FF’s overall legacy, you could do the newest protagonist (currently Clive Rosfield from Final Fantasy 16), however I don’t know if they would considering that game isn’t on the Switch. Mayhaps a cloud port for the next console could switch it up.

You have other successful characters from its history: Zidane, Tidus, Lightning, Noctis, probably not likely but worth mentioning.

And then there’s Chocobo & Moogle.

People want Slime, I’m sure people want Chocobo & Moogle.

In a separate interview in regards to the DLC, he mentions that he might have had misgivings about the idea if Cloud hadn't appeared on a Nintendo system in some form.

So it's not a non-factor. It just isn't an absolute barrier.

I forgot that... but "might" is a strong word there given that his first thought for an FF rep was still Cloud and that adding anyone else didn't feel right.

Whether he'd have shut down the idea or still carried through with it had Cloud lacked any Nintendo appearance is pure speculation.
