Soo, my friend and I play ssbm a lot, we love it yada yada. My problem is I want to bring it to a competitive level and he really doesn't. I have learned a lot of the special moves etc. and I am not bad at them. I will list some of my problems and see if people have suggestions on how to improve myself etc.

Keep in mind that almost all of our battles are played with 4 people (Me, Him, 2x Lvl 1 comps) Don't ask why that's his thing.
We play with items (all of them)
There is no disputing this (most of the time)
I win/lose about 50/50, 1v1 I can probably beat him 70/30 but w/ comps and items I get f'd over a lot.

I don't have ssbm myself or a gamecube.

My main character is Shiek, I'm not bad with luigi but I have been playing sheik a lot and I am getting better and better with her.
His main character is everyone, my main rival with him is marth though.

My pros:
I can wavedash pretty well
I'm pretty good with using needles ( I do have to work on using reverse needles for edgeguarding but I can do it)
I'm decent with my F-tilt and Good with "the slap"
I'm a decent player in general and my timing is getting better and better
I can jc grab, and sometimes chain throw

There are some others but I can't remember them now

My Cons:
I suck at shffling, especially with sheik (need some tips on how to SH with sheik and possibly what buttons people use for things)
I cannot really use wavedashing for a good purpose (besides grabbing)
I need to improve my game speed
I have a tendency to C-stick my down-smash (this might be bad but I'm not sure)
My DI (mainly on getting back, I always DI towards the stage, not up at all. When I come back half the time I immediatly use the jump, the other half if I remember I save it then use it in combo with the Up-B, I need tips for this)
I do stupid Sh*t and die ( such as going off for a kill then getting stuck on the way back up under the rim of FD)

Please offer whatever advise possible, please make it specific, I have read a lot of guides, watched a lot of vids etc. I need advise on a more personally fitted level (also considering my situation). My friend is stonger than me, don't tell me to overpower him and make us play 1v1 w/ no items. Advise for finger speed would be good too.

Thats about it, whatever you think will help please tell me, also I would perfer to stay as sheik, I have toyed with falco, fox etc. and I just don't like them that much.

Thanks guys!

Uhh... You're not going to like my answer. If your using your friends cube + SSBM and he doesn't want to go beyond his current level of play then there's not much you can do. The first few steps in improving consist mostly of hitting training mode for 20-30 minutes a day and just doing the same thing over and over and over and over again until it becomes natural.

The best advice I can give you is to focus on one thing at a time while you're playing him and try to work past all the dumb rules. For example try wavedashing into all of your combos and smashes. You'll probably get punished everytime you wiff one but that's how the process works, things get worse before they get better.

Also try to find something in the regional boards that is near you. Many of your problems are things that can only be fixed with experience (or hours of inane practice a day...). Finding some other smashers near you will help you gain experience and also some hands-on teaching. I didn't learn how to DI until kishprime watched my hands while I played and corrected me.

My last bit of advice is this, go buy a Wii, 1 or 2 controlers, SSBM and put SSBB on hold. Not having your own gear to practice with severely limits you.

I'm gona help u w/sheik...

Ok i'll help you. As a Yoshi player, I must be like Yoshi and Help anyone out... yeah... ok, I'm pretty good w/sheik, of course I just watched some guy who was really good w/sheik and just copied his moves pretty fast. Sheik is an easy character to master, no offence. First of all, WTC is shiff... oh nvm It's Good your good with wave dash. heres a tip. Wave dash back from your opponent when he's going to run and attack you if you know what i mean. then when he has done his run atack smash him or something. The C-stick is good. Keep using that for everything, unless you do a charged smash. I don't use the C-stick but it's a good stratagy. Another tip, try getting good w/zelda. Sure she's slow, but she is powerful. Once you get good w/her, keep switching characters in a battle, (when you have an opportunity), to keep you opponent ajusting to the speed change. try also juggling w/ the down throw. It works with both Zelda and sheik, but only works against a select few characters. Yoshi is not one of those select few characters, because that's just how awsome he is...

tip for zelda, not many people remember that zelda's "b" move deflects projectiles and they won't be expecting you to use it when their right next to you. it helps you a lot.

tip for Sheik/Zelda. When you charge up SHeik's darts your opponent will be ready for them. So IF YOU CHOOSE, change to zelda fight for a while and then change back to Sheik. Your darts will still be charged and you oppenent may forget about it.

First of all, WTC is Sffling?? .
Im sorry, i love responding to u cuz ur funny. Shuffling is short for "short-hopping, fast fall, l cancel" And u claim u are the best yoshi player in NE... anyways, its a way to perform ariel atatcks very quickly.

P.S. I'm sorry if this was completely off topic. This guy just annoys me to no end!

Just some generic tips from me: one, DON'T USE ITEMS!! If you use items as a crutch to win, you'll be limping into tournaments...two, ixnay on the putercom (screwed it up, I know)...at least level 'em up to 5-7...three, check out my video...I'm not that good, but I fight by pro rules...here's the link to my thread: http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=117042

One more thing...I have a friend who doesn't like competitive play (he even refuses to edgehog because it's "cheap")...I don't talk to him much, and my other friend (who's extremely competitive...my crew's co-creator) and I aren't letting him join our crew until he plays a little more competitively...sorry for the tangent, but I thought it might help...

oh. short-hopping. I no that. Just never heard it that way before. Look, if you really want to see who the best yoshi player is, then we can go through all the trouble of finding each other, getting something scheduled blah blah blah, but if we're just going to try to see who's better by typing crap then taht's just useless. so let's not argue and let's help each other like real yoshis would.:)

P.S. I'm sorry if this was completely off topic 2.

Don't just focus on your techniques; being able to read and predict your opponent is also vitally important. Remember to keep your eye on him and note any patterns he has that may be exploited. If you want to improve your techs it's really a matter of practice as takamaru says. As for your SH question, I use the Y button and slide my finger off the side quickly. Go to a stage with platforms so you can judge the height better. And about DI you really just have to keep reminding yourself and eventually it will become a habit. Finally, go to plank's guide for the marth match-up and if you're still having problems you can ask specific questions.
