The first day of the main events at Super Smash Bros. Melee's highly anticipated invitational Smash Summit 3 has concluded! Here's our wrap-up of both singles and doubles for those who were not able to watch live.

Doubles

Swedish House Mafia (William "Leffen" Hjelte and James "Mafia" Lauerman) were the big surprise in doubles yesterday. Both of them held their own and co-ordinated well to pull off two major upsets over PewFat and PlupBox, the second and third seeds in the tournament respectively. Aside from that, the rest of the matches went played out according to seeding except for HBJ's (Joseph "Mango" Marquez and Johnny "S2J" Kim) win over PlupBox, which put them in the top 4.

Singles

Singles brought the hype yesterday with some upsets and close sets. Here are some of the most notable matches from day 1 of the bracket:
  • S2J takes Jason "Mew2King" Zimmerman to game 5 for the second set in a row
  • James "Duck" Ma nets a win over Zac "SFAT" Cordoni in a rematch from Shine 2016 and Dairly Beloved
  • Kevin "PewPewU" Toy overcomes the Marth vs. Captain Falcon matchup and eliminates S2J from the tournament 3-0
  • Ryan "The Moon" Coker-Welch pulls off an impressive reverse 3-0 to leave SFAT at a disappointing 13th place
As always, the tournament VODS can be found on BeyondTheSummit's YouTube and Twitch channels. Be sure to tune into the final stretch of the singles and doubles tournaments today on Twitch -- history will be made as the Smash Summit 3 champions are crowned.
