Well some tips I can think of.
*Starting as Zero Suit Samus will give you suit parts to throw, they can quickly kill the first stock of your opponent if you catch them off guard

*Characters that are fast or have alot of consecutive hit moves would be good for smashballs

*Go to the dojo and study the controls for the character you will use

*If you don't have brawl air practice with the wii remote and nunchuck, and imagine what your character will do as you press the buttons

*Plan on a strong chance of being forced into super sudden death, I suggest practicing a few sudden death matches on melee

well thats all I can think of for now

anyone else got anything to add?

Sudden Death is being replaced with another round I believe.

Use the terrain and items to your advantage and try not to let your opponent have any. If you have to throw the item off the stage if it's too good and you think they have a chance to get it.

Block, **** it! Blocking is key. And have fun.

You are all forgetting this torny has gay rules and allows items, therefore I reccomend using fox and shining incoming items because this will be a throwing fest assuming most participants are casuals.

I will be using Mario for the tournament, since he has both the advantage of being familiar and yet improved at the same time. Also, the cape is good against items. We'll see. The biggest advantage is probably having a modded or import-friendly Wii to practice on.

I plan on using Fox since his shine spike has a good chance of messing people up. Also, shine stalling will probably be really useful in 1 minute matches.

I might choose Ice Climbers for their ability to pick up two items at once too, but its not as likely.

i was gonna make a list of stuff like this for personal use, but having a list on smashboards is even better.

tips ive thought of:

practice melee without using adv techs (just so that u get the feel for the game)
look at the character guides in the character section of the forums

u kinda already posted the majority of what i was going to put in my list :p

Wait, is there a link to the official rules and stuff of the tourney? (and I don't mean the "rules" as to how each round of the tournament will work..)

I couldn't find any info at all about items and available characters.. so yeah, could I get a link?

It's between Mario and Fox for me. I'll probably use Mario since I'm better with him, but I'm not sure. I'm going to keep reflecting every item that is thrown at me I'm also going to use/throw every item I get at my opponent. Once I get them to 80+, I'm going to meteor smash them.

I really hope this happens. My opponent picks up the Super Scope and then charges it. He's like, "I'm going to kill you!" I then use my cape and reflect it back at him. I'll then say, "Did you say you were going to kill me? I think it's the other way around."

Apparently, the rounds are 4 player free for alls, all one minute matches. In this case, Ike and Dedede are, hands down, the best characters you can use. Large areas of attack that can kill at low percentages, with lower pressure on them thanks to the presence of other fighters. Just whacking an entire group off the stage and defending for the rest of the match is good enough.

Ah. I overlooked the rules completely. You bring up a good point. Racking up kills in timed battles requires a different approach than a stock match. Those sound like good choices. Bowser is probably viable, then. DK, maybe?

I didn't know it was 4 player free for alls >_> Then I'm definitely using Ike.

Though when I just can't decide, I might just choose Random lol.

Well, Official Rules say 1v1. Though we know those are essentially worthless, but most people are also reporting 1v1 as what their Gamestops are telling them.

Call your Gamestop for details on the tournament, since it varies between because they have no regulation.

Bowser and DK could be viable, but their reach is significantly less than Ike's/Dedede's. However, if we're taking Final Smashes into account, I could see Bowser beating out Ike in utility. Dedede is still a **** good group killer.

yeah if your counting Final Smashes

1. Bowser , hes almost invincible, if he actually isnt.
2.Dedede he just kicks ***
3. Ike it is strong and is almost an instant kill.
4. DK it sucks all it will do is damage the people, and then other people will steal your kills :p

You cant go wrong by using Zelda, and if they are untouchable, transform to shiek. Transform to shiek in sudden death mode though. Shiek is more likely to get in a hit than Zelda. But for the most part you'll want to stay as Zelda for her powerful kicks and she has a reflector for projectile spamming, which I think lots of people will do in a one minute match, they'll just keep on spamming projectiles cause they will be playing it safe, but Nayru's Love wont allow that.

I would highly suggest not transforming in sudden death! in brawl they greatly increased zelda/sheiks transformation time

If it's 1v1, I'm going with Lucas... the ability to reflect a few items really isn't going to make as big of a difference unless it's a character you main (I main Ness). I'd rather be playing with a character I'm good at then have an opportunity to reflect a few items.

If it's free for all, I'll just end up using Ike and kill-steal like crazy.

For those planning to play Bowser and Koopacide, I'd recommend not. I've personally tested it, and your opponent gets a point ahead, not you. You'll lose one point, while your opponent stays at zero.

ALSO, im curious about the whole deal with timed and u commiting suicide after a kill.
The way i see it, like in melee timed... u get the kill...+1 for u and -1 for ur opponent.
then u commit suicide giving u fresh health and 0 for u and -1 for ur opponent.
it is a good way to avoid giving the opponent that extra kill...

SWEETEST STRATEGY!!!!!

There is no jump-cancel grab in Brawl.

If you do it in Brawl you'll end up jumping and airdodging and probably suiciding if you're close to the edge so the right thing will be to shield to cancel your dash animation and grab out of the shield.

I'm using Mario too, since I'm pretty good with him on Melee, and again, the cape, a Meteor Smash, and F.L.U.D.D. will help too. My GameStop refuses to plan any rules ahead of time, but they hinted that stages could be just random. My only strategy in case of Sudden Death is either Fast-Falling Nair, or roll-to-shieldgrab. I don't think I should risk aerials or dash attacks, I tend to get overpowered if attacks clash, or maybe I just don't have the timing right yet. I really do hope Smash Balls are turned off because many Final Smashes I have no way to counter, and it's a real tide-turning item if I let one slip. Also I have to get out of the bad habit of taking Ukemi (yes, taking, that's the expression) when aerials, jumping, or stick rotation will pull me out faster and leave me less vulnerable.

Any other thoughts?

I think I'm going to use snake pretty much just because I main him, and if you've never played brawl, you're very suseptable to his f-smash/spike/explosives.

I'm not sure. I was thinking Ike for this because of the new controls. People will be frantically trying to do stuff that they do in melee, while I will just fsmash. Then I thought, what if I face a guy I KNOW is good at this game already (anyone who has gone and bought the Japanese Wii and an import Brawl). Well, I'd have to go Pit or Diddy, because I've been studying their movesets and have a pretty good idea how to translate it to Wiimote + Nunchuck format. Hopefully I don't screw it up and get beat by a random 8 year old. Man, that would suck. Or even worse, some random nerd in a Mario outfit. I am so screwed. No, melon, don't think like that. You can win at least round 1. But what if you can't? I give up. I'll just do it and say the heck with it. What's the worst that could happen?

It has been speculated that only the starting roster will be available for the GameStop tournament. This list doesn't include Snake. May wanna rethink that.

Oh, and as a warning to Mario mains, timing is so different that I've been having trouble effectively predicting projectiles enough to cape. You may be better off with lots of nairs, bairs, uairs, upsmash, and downsmash. Oh, and short-hopped dairs.

YOU GUYS!!! Amazing 1st round strat.
i've done some researching and if u commit suicide
after u kill ur opponent u will still be ahead by one point,
meaning u have just refreshed ur health and prevented ur
opponent from having a chance of winning.

1.) kill opponent= you-> +1 opponent->-1
2.) jump off side= you-> 0 full health opponent -> -1
3.) u have just clinched the game and pissed the
other person off.

Yea, Nintendo does NOT know how to set up a tournament. However, I will go as it's probably the only FREE tourney I will ever be able to play in.
