General Yo-Kai Watch Discussion

Yo-Kai Watch is a popular series of role playing games in Japan created by Level-5.

Yo-kai are supernatural spirits who roam around the town haunting and causing mischief to people, ranging from Yo-kai that can make a person suddenly want to pee to one that can force you buy unnecessary things when you're out shopping. The premise itself is different from Pokemon as the player's goal revolves around searching the town of Springdale with the use
of a special device called the Yo-kai Watch to search, battle, and befriend Yo-kai to stop their bad deeds.

The gameplay of Yo-kai Watch is vastly different from Pokemon too. The only elements they share is that they involve a large amount of creatures to collect. After that, that is where the similarities between the two end. Unlike the usual RPG turn-based battle system, Yo-Kai Watch's battles takes place in real-time. Your party auto-fights opponents, and as they do, you use their special abilities to aid you in battle.

Since the first game's debut, Yo-kai Watch has become a massive phenomenon in Japan with exploding with manga, anime, spinoffs, mobile games, and merchandise across every street of Japan, selling in at over 7 million copies of the franchise's games total.
(Combining Yo-kai Watch Busters' sales, it goes up to over 8 billion)
(Another fact: The second YW game outsold Pokemon Omega Ruby/Sapphire in sales).

Right now, Level-5 and Nintendo are going to release this game overseas to America, where NoA confirmed that the first game will release in November 6th. You can try out the demo for Yo-Kai Watch on the 3DS eShop, let me know your thoughts about it. I'll be listing EVERYTHING that made Yokai Watch extremely popular in Japan:

Japanese promotional poster for the anime. Currently claimed as one of the top 10 children anime of Japan.

The Yokai Watch movie promotional poster. The movie made $55 million (￥6.5 billion in yen) since its hit debut, also making the biggest grossing opening of any Japanese movie since 2000.

Merchandise of this franchise in Japan has been selling like hotcakes, as The toys Namco Bandai has been making for Yokai Watch have been selling over 10 billion yen ($93 billion in U.S.) to show its staggering success. Many Japanese stores has Yo-kai Watch merchandise ready to buy! The medals are also compatible with the arcade machines YW has, which is also extremely popular with kids.

It doesn't end there... there's still more Yo-kai Watch to come, this spawned more than just the ones I listed!

An upcoming attraction for Universal Studios Japan, YW has gotten so popular to warrant its own attraction.

It's already has its name ingrained in restaurants, stores, trains, and even a Japanese singing group.

mogmog burgers, YW's parody of Mcdonalds, this Mcdonalds recently just transformed into its parody counterpart.

NyaKB, YW's parody of the popular AKB48 band, whom AKB48 actually partnered with Level-5 with to do concerts for them.

This very music video spawned a large collection of catchy songs that reigned over Japan as one of the top songs in Japan, with over 100,000,000+ views total. Various parodies were made for the song as well.

Nintendo sure is pushing the franchise here in the west. Hopefully it will succeed.

Anyway...after playing the demo, I must say: I LOVE this game.
Springdale is HUGE, and, even though I was limited to only a small section of the map, there were still lots of places to explore, secret boxes to be found and yokais to be discovered.
The gameplay was another highlight. The real time feedback and the roulette mechanic make the battles unique from others RPGs out there, and I love it.

Can't wait for the full game to come out.

When you actually get to see how extensive the world of Springdale is in the full game, you'll truly be blown away. Granted it's the only place the game is, it hold so much more detail and avenues of exploration than even Pokemon does (and you're travelling the entire region in Pokemon, not just one city). Having played the Japanese versions of all the Yo-kai Watch games (and eagerly anticipating the 3rd main game next year), I sincerely hope it succeeds as well so that we can get the sequels since they improve upon the first game by leaps and bounds (Level-5 says the reception of the first will be a determining factor even though they really want to localize the sequels right away).

It was all the "gaming media" sites that made the bold claim it's a "pokemon killer" which is not the franchise's intention. It is pretty well known that in Japan a lot of younger kids no longer have any true interest in the pokemon franchise because workdwide it is overly saturated with older teen/adult fans. So when Youkai Watch came onto the scene, kids gravitated toward it in droves as it was a new franchise free from the "annoying" older crowd (which are ironically now joining in). Youkai Watch has only declined recetly in Japan because Level-5 made the mistake of announcing a 3rd main series game and yet delaying it to next year when said game would tie in pretty closely with the recent new season that features a new character and new youkai. By making the fans wait and hoping the new movie out in December, toys (U watch and medals) and new season are enough to tide them over until the game comes out next year, the series might lose steam in Japan, hence I hope it really succeeds outside of the country.

Hi! Long time since posting! Sometimes where I live games are released 1 or 2 days before their official date, so if the game is out on friday I'm expecting it since wednesday, maybe you are lucky and is out even tomorrow!

Answering those questions:

1. My character selection ranking would be: Inaho > Nate > Katie. I'd like Inaho to be playable in the third one. I'm going to stick with Nate for now.

2. I'd like to befriend Blazion, I'd like to use it, but it depends of how good he is.

3. I don't really know wich one to choose, I'm excited for the game itself.

Shame that PokeCanada's channel was taken down for copyright infringement on YouTube since Disney wants you to watch Yo-Kai Watch on TV at all costs. Things like this makes me hate YouTube's rules so much.

On a brighter side, most of the reviews for the game are already out and they are pretty mixed on the game's fighting system so far (among other pacing issues). But chances are that the second game will be better and what matters the most is if the first game sells well in America.
