Hello all, first post. Apologies ahead of time if it may seem long.

First of all I would like to say that I think these forums are great for information and I've used it to improve my game immensely. I thank Aether for the guide and others who have contributed. So I picked up my copy of brawl on release day and I've been playing it tons with some friends. I played ssb64 but not melee. In brawl, I've come to like Toon Link the best and use him most of the time, and I use game & watch, pikachu, and falco as my alternates. I hold my own fairly well and through this forum have picked up a lot of tricks that really help.

However I have a friend that uses mainly Zelda. His play style consists of Din's Fire spamming and reflect/smash in close range. I was usually able to avoid the Din's Fire spam and with proper spacing I can get through his defenses. I would win about 75% of the time until recently. He plays with lvl 9 computers and has picked up their habit of shield/dodge/roll/air dodge spamming, but he just does it SO MUCH MORE. he just constantly does this and there doesnt seem to be any lag inbetween or very little that I can capitalize on. I have tried a few things that are effective. For example Up+B usually gets him off when hes next to me, grabbing sometimes works but when I miss I get punished, Dsmash and Fsmash works when I dont miss. I often get him into u-air -> b-air combo when I can catch him inbetween dodges and shields but usually dodges the 2nd b-air. I try to keep distance and projectile spam to rack up damage but when the distance closes its difficult for me to capitalize. He has recently tried playing other characters such as Marth and does the same thing with whom I have a more difficult time with because of his range, and I now have a hard time beating it. The question is, how can I punish him for spamming this? Do I just need better timing and better spacing? Or am I approaching this incorrectly? Feedback appreciated.

Don't forget bombs, they can break through a shield when thrown at their feet.

Also, if you don't already, get the habit down of grabbing with Shield + A. It's faster and more instinctive, and will often grab the opponent when hitting the Z button will miss.

Oh, and Nairs are your best friend, other than Bairs.
