I mean, the reason it is so famous is that Nintendo Characters fight. I wouldn't have ever heard of it if it didn't.

depends on what characters, Nintendo or not, were in it.

I see people are running out of ideas for threads! lol.

And yes, I would. If it had the same type of gameplay, yes, I would.

In fact, I'd like it better if Sega made it.

Depends. The Nintendo characters (and it's guest newcomers) is what makes Smash Bros, though I wouldn't seeing the same concept with different characters.

well Jump ultimate allstars is a good example of this and while I don't own it I wish I did. I don't really care for manga but I just love the mechanics and physics of smash. So the answer is yes. however I'm really happy it is nintendo related because that gives the series alot of charm along with the "dream cast" appeal.

I would, but Nintendo does create a wonderful creative cast . Other than that, depends heavily on whose starring for me.

I'd buy a Smash game as long as it had the Nintendo characters we had now, and would continue to buy it if they kept adding even more 3rd party VIDEO game personalities.

But if they started adding **** like Goku,/Naruto/Chandler.

No, just no.

if a different company made it, it would probably suck. it seems nintendo are the only company that can pull off something like SSB. although maybe, just maybe the sega team of 14 years ago could have done a good job with it

but not the sega team of now. they cant do anything right (Sonic The Hedgehog, Born 1991, Died 1998)

lol. Ouch. I actually liked the Adventure series. (All 2 of them)

Well, from what I've seen, Sega Superstar Tennis looks enjoyable... but I know that doesn't match the greatness of Brawl.

I enjoyed the first Sonic Adventure, but once Shadow was introduced the series died.

Don't they have a different hedgehogs besides Shadow now and days? The Light one, or whatever?

There are now 2 extra hedgehogs we don't need:

Shadow (Uber badass clone of Sonic, whose not really a clone because what the **** he was created before Sonic.)

Silver (Some Crazy telekintetic crap from the future or alternate time line or something)

I only like hedgehogs that are blue and pink. :o

Getting back on topic . . .

In the event that there was a game that played exactly like Smash Bros, but did not feature Nintendo characters, I'd still buy it if it had a full cast of Square characters. Think about it:

Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy (I - XIII and Tactics), Xenogears, Super Mario RPG, Vagrant Story, Legend of Mana, Actraiser, etc.

There is a metric ton of GOOD characters they could throw in. Now, I know there is always the new 'Dissidia' (or whatever it's called) game coming out, but odds are that it isn't going to play just like Smash does . . .

The only other company I could tolerate would be Capcom.

I would. I love Smash game mechanics, but Brawl roster s0x. (Yes, another "no Ridley, Geno, Krystal & Isaac complaint")

Hoping for DCL...

Smash's biggest appeal is its diverse range of familiar characters. No 1 person can come up with a complete series of original Smash characters and set the same standard. And no, a game filled with hedgehogs really can't have the diversity Smash has... although there is an awful lot of space animals and plumbers. Taking the characters from just 1 particular serie would probably make the game too monotonous, the fact that you have Pikachu beating up Captain Falcon punching Mario throwing fireballs at Fox is what makes the game appeal to so many.

I guess I wouldn't have bought it if it weren't for the fact that it had so many cool familiar characters anyways.

But what if the entire cast was original characters?

It probably wouldn't have the same appeal for me, but I don't really know.
Well, I really couldn't answer that. Of course, I'd lose the nostalgia factor, but the characters in the game wouldn't be limited to their appearances in other games (IE: Half of Sonic's moves are Spin Dashes).

At the very least, it would provide a few new characters that I most definately would like. I have yet to play a fighting game where I haven't liked at least one character.

Ok presuming that Nintendo was still behind the title and it features a slew of brand new, original characters, I doubt the series would have done as well as it has.

Since the original Smash Bros released toward the end of the 64's waning career, if it didn't feature Mario, Link, Fox, Pikachu or any of our other favorite characters, I doubt very many people would have taken notice. The lack of attention would likely not warrant a sequel or if it did, certainly not one to help lauch the Gamecube. And by taking one of the Gamecube's top selling games away, we now have to question if the Wii would have made it to fruition by now.

It's a good thing they made it a"Nintendo All-Stars" beat-em up to begin with. [/end conspiracy mode]

To answer the question, with a totally original cast, I likely would not have bought the original. I might have gotten into the subsequent sequels though, as I still like the playstyle.

Super Halo Bros. Brawl...no jk...but really, I think that nintendo is the only company with a range of characters big enough to pull something like smash off, except for maybe Square Enix and maybe Sega.

I wouldn't buy it if I honestly hated the replacing cast; but if we got a game that's essentially brawl through in through in terms of gameplay and content; and rather than a nintendo cast it had say;
an original group of characters, or perhaps characters from somewhere else -and- I didn't hate how they looked, I'd buy it.

The nintendo fanservice honestly helped it's fame and just works together with what it is, but the gameplay alone is substantial enough for me to buy this game without the fanservice.

No I would not.

There are games with FAR better fighting mechanics, but Smash's appeal is the loveable characters and loads of options/modes.

Melee was one of the deepest fighters. You can make a case for Guilty Gear, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Street Fighter 3 third strike, and maybe someothers being deeper in the 2D fighter market. Melee is considered a tourney competition game everywhere (where videogames are big) except Japan (there is a tourney scene there but some of the prominent tourney circuits there don't have Smash tournies). This is probably the only 2D fighter game that Americans are better at then than the Japanese. So if you don't support Melee, you are a communist and are surely not American. :p

If all the original Nintendo characters were completely replaced I wouldn't buy it.

If Nintendo had all their characters in the roster plus some other 1st parties (I can think of like 14 more of them) PLUS like 8 other 3rd parties from many companies like Capcom and Ubisoft etc then that'd be the ultimate Smash game. I would have only saw that happening if 10 different 3rd party companies had agreed to heavily invest many of their titles on the Wii though. It'd also only make sense if they were video game characters only and not from TV or movies etc.

No. Generic boring characters (Ryu) are the worst part of other fighting games. Soul Calibur would be better if the only characters were the likes of Link and Yoda.

You mean not neccesarily specific to Nintendo, just specific to video game icons? Hellz yeah.

I'm thinking of other video game characters like Dante, Kratos, Lara Croft, Ryu, etc.

Of course it would still need Nintendo characters in it though.
