  • It makes me laugh a little when Smash fans bring up "muh polish" when comparing Nickelodeon All Star Brawl to Smash Ultimate.

Smash 4 fans went on and on about polish in Smash 4 days when comparing it to Melee but they aren't playing 4 anymore. They're playing Ultimate despite its visuals being worse while Melee lived on.

Should another Smash game come out in the future and Ultimate players immediately drop Ultimate for that new "polished" toy while Melee and NASB live on, I won't be surprised at all.
    DrCoeloCephalo
    DrCoeloCephalo
Nah. 4 has more of "muh polish" in other areas besides visuals. I just bring that one up mainly cuz it's a more common complaint. At least 4's online was free and it had Smash Run and didn't suffer from input delay.

I think “polish” in terms of gameplay mainly applies to visuals and how the gameplay feels, so gamemodes like the online system and smash run aren’t really “polish”

Also, I’ll admit I haven’t played it yet but from what I’ve heard and what people have said, NASB does have some issues with visuals and gameplay that could be fixed with more polish. That’s a leginitimite criticism and I don’t think it really helps to suggest everyone making them are just salty smash fans
    DrCoeloCephalo
    DrCoeloCephalo
I never said they couldn't benefit from improving the game. I just think it's hypocritical considering the circumstances. They just recently patched out things like Mikey's air camping and Sandy's infinite, so it's not like they aren't doing that anyway with "muh precious polish".
Something funny happened to me today.
I have some good friends that invite me to streams and play multiplayer games with them both in parties online and even friends that invite me to events offline.
Yet in plenty of online discussions, I find these absolute losers that say "you must be fun at parties" when they have nothing of actual value to add or say just cuz they disagree with something I say that I can fairly back up. Considering how many good friends I have that want me around, yeah. I am. Now make an actual counterargument lol.
Another such person said such dumb stuff and it really helps me appreciate the friends I have that invite me to things.
Hearing the "complaints" about NASB feels familiar.
    Champion of Hyrule

What are the complaints you’re talking about?
    DrCoeloCephalo
    DrCoeloCephalo
Janky animation for one despite said person claiming the game wasn't finished over some rare Ice Climbers glitch in Ultimate that made some janky animations.
I remember one person even saying the game is "too fast and will drive players away." lol.
Considering the fact Nintendo tried to cancel a Melee tournament where the money would have gone to cancer donations, I would NOT be surprised if they specifically made their last character reveal October 5th JUST for Nickelodeon All Star Brawl making their blood boil that competitive Smash fans are excited about it but Nintendo can't give the game a cease and desist.
Really didn't care about anything shown in the Direct.
All the games I'm already excited for, I know are coming out soon anyway with Nickelodeon All Star Brawl, Shin Megami Tensei 5, Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania and Mario Party SuperStars.
Unless the final Fighter in Ultimate is Waluigi or Jibanyan, I'm extremely unlikely to care about that either.
So about Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania's "paid DLC", it seems they pulled a bit of a fast one on us. Now I'm happier I pre-ordered it.

It's no exaggeration at all to say "Orcanos is the Landorus-T of Competitive Yo-Kai Watch 2"

There's almost no reason to not run him. He has the highest HP stat in all of Yo-Kai Watch 2 and the 2nd highest Defense stat and his Strength stat is also super high. He gets a Skill that boosts his Defense just for being front and center and being Tough Tribe makes it so his Defense can get even higher.

Orcanos is a super powerful wall in YKW2 meta.

So how come this guy goes from being everywhere in YKW2 meta to being nowhere to be seen in YKW3 meta?

He wasn't nerfed at all. His stats appear to be exactly the same in 3.
The reason you don't see him as much in YKW3 meta is actually simple.

The biggest being that in 3, magic attacks ignore Defense, making magic attackers in general much stronger compared to how they were in 2. Now any Yo-Kai that is a magic attacker with a high Spirit stat is turned into a powerful wallbreaker.

Having high Defense isn't as good as it used to be.

Orcanos's Skill was also changed slightly. It still has to be front and center to buff its Defense but now it has to be on the center TILE. Now it has to work more to get that buff especially since the center tile is the easiest to cover with Soultimates. Plus, the grid being 3x3 and standing in the center, you can't defend BOTH your teammates with a vertical link like you would with tons of other Tanks. This stuff made it so Orcanos had to compete with way more S Ranks to justify its spot on a team. It still has incredible stats and a good Skill but everything changed around it so the stuff it could usually get away with no longer works.

The new Dokev trailer came out and it got me super excited.
Of course, right on schedule, Pokemon fans crawl out of the woodwork to defend the honor of Pokemon as another monster collector game had the audacity to not only exist but look a million times better.
Alot of Pokemon fans sure love to say you can't compare Pokemon to other games in the genre when Pokemon is at an obvious, glaring disadvantage.
From what we've seen anyway, Dokev has way more in common with Yo-Kai Watch than Pokemon anyway.
I just want to point out the fact Yo-Kai Watch games have like 4 victory animations for each monster and most of them have the monsters dancing.

Pokemon BDSP is using the walking animations to "dance" in Contests.

    DrCoeloCephalo
    DrCoeloCephalo
Yo-Kai Watch reuses animations too and they're monumentally better by a landslide. Why should I cut the multibillion dollar company ANY slack when the smaller company with way less money can do the same thing far better by an astronomical level accompanied by the fact games like Yo-Kai Watch 3 has ALL past monsters in a single game totalling it to 752 and all that game's DLC is free?

Yo-Kai Watch makes Pokemon look like a joke, so I will TREAT Pokemon like a joke.

    Wigglerman

For the record, my statements were entirely satire. I've still be on the soap box that Game Freak is lazy as sin in regards to the visuals of their games. They just don't have the excuse for it. When Monster Hunter Stories 2 is basically Pokémon on crack and has loads of unique animations and such it's hard to take anything Game Freak says seriously. I get they have a lot of creatures now but this is something they could have remedied over time, even if only a handful of Pokémon got that treatment per installment until everyone had some unique stuff about them during combat and such.
    DrCoeloCephalo
    DrCoeloCephalo
Sarcasm is like a foreign language when it's in text format. Apologies.

That's another reason why I praise Yo-Kai Watch so highly. Monsters actually manage to remain unique from each other in combat both animation wise and metagame wise.

You can take just about any complaint common to Pokemon games and you can bet that that problem doesn't exist in Yo-Kai Watch games.

Monster Hunter Stories 2 is also a good one as far as the large number of monster collectors I play go.
I really don't agree with Ranked matches not being available in BDSP or LA. Ideally, you should be striving to make a better single player AND multiplayer experience which is part of the reason I praise YKW so much for providing that with Busters and balancing its online competitive format. These games are willfully alienating the people that spend so much time stat maxing for the competitive format that some Pokemon fans are willing to pretend is the "challenge and postgame" of a Pokemon game.

    Pokelego999
    Pokelego999
I mean, online battles still exist. At least. It's in the Union Room format though, which I'm not too familiar with.
    DrCoeloCephalo
    DrCoeloCephalo
Then why on earth bother cutting the Ranked battles?
    Pokelego999
    Pokelego999
    No idea.
I've had this conversationthat made me think.

Some Pokemon fans act like the physical/special split is some kind deep and intricate feature.

Honestly, it's not. Other monster collectors years older like Dragon Quest and Shin Megami Tensei had their stat layouts already organized for this kind of thing and followed the traditional RPG stigma that any elemental attack is a magic attack.

If it wasn't for sites like Bulbapedia, we wouldn't even know this kind of information since the game doesn't tell you at all which elements are physical like Normal and which elements use magic like Dragon.

So the physical/special split isn't really depth or new cuz it's just something other games had already. It's just something they made to somewhat remedy years of bad game design.
    DrCoeloCephalo
    DrCoeloCephalo
    No, there weren't.
Everything else benefitted from it but those two. I don't really need to trust you cuz I already know this stuff from studying the meta for years.
Flareon is probably the only other thing you could make a case for but that thing suffers from SO many other issues that are a problem with Pokemon in general.

EDIT: Sceptile, actually. Seriously struggling to find any other examples tho.
    Pokelego999
    Pokelego999
Just looked back, other than the ones you mentioned and Banette, couldn't really remember much else. Probably forgetting one or two things, but such is life.

Well anywho, the buffs of the physical/special split changed how good certain Pokemon were. Things like Huge Power Azumarill, Absol, Sharpedo, Shiftry, Feraligatr, etc, appreciated finally being able to use STAB off their superior physical stat, for instance. There wasn't too much notable on the Special side other than the Ghosts being able to enjoy Special Shadow Ball, among a few other things I'm probably forgetting.
    DrCoeloCephalo
    DrCoeloCephalo
Dude, I already said earlier everything else benefitted from it. That would include all those examples. Bannette is in the same boat as Flareon where it's an issue of almost everything else with bad Speed, no Fighting coverage and power creep.
Was searching for a particular image I had posted awhile back and stumbled upon people using screenshots of things I said to call out the nonsense that Pokemon SWSH was and still is and them wholeheartedly agreeing with it. Pretty flattering that I can say things plainly so others don't have to.

Why do people assume a game they don't follow or keep up with is dead and then get surprised when it gets new content and updates when it's been around this whole time?
Are people just not aware of series outside the ones they focus on?
    GolisoPower
    GolisoPower
I honestly have no idea. Maybe they don't like a game so they pretend that game is dead so they don't have to think about it. Maybe they just want the game to die so they lead people to thinking development is over.

I mean, it also depends on the game, too. No Man's Sky is a great example of what you just said because eventually the game had the biggest comeback in history. But to its credit, there was ****ty communication and a rocky launch, so views of "dead game lol" can be justified.

Meanwhile, Among Us doesn't have those same problems, and Innersloth is adding content all the time. In that facet, it almost seems like everyone is thinking "NoOo! StOp aDdInG NeW CoNtEnT! jUsT LeT It dIe aLrEaDy" because of how most games with randoms generally go, as well as how many memes spawned from it.

So it's kind of hard to say, really.
    Pokelego999
    Pokelego999
I think it's just cause we forget about it so much our minds convince ourselves that it's a dead forgotten game. It then seeps back in, the game, and then we remember it. I dunno why it happens, but it's normally not out of hatred of the game, just pure forgetfulness.
    DrCoeloCephalo
    DrCoeloCephalo
That makes sense. Can't say I remembered No Man's Sky, not that I hated it. All I recall was that it sucked at launch.
Someone said they're worried Level-5 is gonna dissolve in Japan.

Yeah, I'm totally worried about the company that has 2 mobile games to its name that are among the top grossing mobile games in all of Japan with Ni No Kuni Cross Worlds and Yo-Kai Watch Puni Puni.

    Idiot.
    Bad news.
After about 5 years of care, my 3DS is falling apart so I need to get it repaired or more likely replaced.
    Good news.
Figured out how to install Checkpoint and used it to back up the save data of my Yo-Kai Watch games.
I think it's funny how people that try to discredit DistantKingdom will say his videos are stale and beating a dead horse as if PokeTubing in general isn't any different with most of it easy to label as repeating the same spoopy PokeDex entries, baseless repetititive theory videos, reciting info any fool can find on Bulbapedia or le epic funnee low ladder Pokemon Showdown gimmick team montage of making scrubs angry over no-skill luck factors, all of which have been around longer to beat their even long dead horse corpses.

Not like being "stale" makes his points any less true or relevant anyway.
    DrCoeloCephalo
    DrCoeloCephalo
That's not an argument at all.

An axe is a tool crafted with the intent for cutting trees. Using it for something other than that is the responsibility of the buyer. Games are a products too in addition to being art and the manufacturer has shown very clearly signs of ineptitude and dishonesty. He's not using a game cartridge for the unintended purpose of killing someone. He's using it for its intended purpose of a means of entertainment and as an art piece and logically judging it as being terrible on both ends. Your example doesn't work because it's the fault of the artist for putting out a poorly drawn stick figure that is ridiculously overpriced and people are logically upset by it because many like and support the artist and want to see them do better. So it works very logically.

It very much is their fault because if he didn't make these videos, someone else would because tons of people care about Pokemon.
Personally, I would LOVE to cover videos of how awful SWSH is but thanks to him, I don't have to.
When a game that alot of people care about ends up sucking, the logical response is appropriate backlash to avoid repeating history.
Ya certainly don't see people complaining about how people "beat a dead horse" over how bad Sonic 06 because Sonic fans would prefer to have history not repeat itself like that yet similar backlash is rightfully given to Forces without complaints about it "being milked" or "beating a dead horse" because like I said, it's a logical response.

Also, there kinda was more evidence of how SWSH's quality was worse and I'm pretty sure he covered that with the evidence provided by the beta footage in one of his videos so he's got ya covered there.

Not all his content is comparing the games to Genius Sonority. He only used those for his videos about why expressive animation is important and in his videos where he himself actually animates the ingame models. Even if those WERE all his videos, there's nothing wrong with that since animation quality is one the excuses a ton of monsters got cut, so you can blame Game Freak for clearly lying about that otherwise he wouldn't be able to bring it up.
    Pokelego999
    Pokelego999
I can definitely agree his first few were very enlightening for sure. I'm glad he made those ones, but it is the more recent ones I'm having fault with. Mainly it's just repeating about graphics quality. Maybe once the new games drop proper and we see, say, overall gameplay problems, that's interesting, that's new, it isn't the same mindless banter about graphics quality.

Besides that, for my first example, I put it into perspective on how something where you just blamed the company for what the buyer does, and how that wouldn't make sense in other contexts. If it doesn't make sense there, then it wouldn't make sense here.

I agree, SWSH is bad, but it's not irredeemable. It's a fun little thing, maybe not difficult and definitely needs polish yes, but it's fun and cool to play, which is what a Pokemon game needs to be.
    DrCoeloCephalo
    DrCoeloCephalo
It's not mindless in the slightest because it's founded on well thought out facts taken into consideration. It is a fact that the Nintendo Switch can run games that look as pretty as Breath of the Wild or how even a port of a 3DS game like Yo-Kai Watch 1 looks immensely prettier. If the visuals looked JUST as good, there would be zero reason to bring up how bad SWSH looks anyway.

The buyer rightfully criticizing the manufacturer for selling inferior products is something any self-respecting and smart consumer does and self-respecting business is familiar with the phrase "The customer is always right." It's not the customer's fault if the manufacturer is incompetent and the customer cannot be blamed if they take their purchases elsewhere. It's basic business sense. Only reason it can be overriden so easily in this context is because a good number of customers treat their manufacturer like a god to be worshipped and "be grateful" to as if other people don't make games.

Fun is a subjective and preferential concept. You can't argue it as a point because it varies from person to person. Different people have fun with different things. We have so much variety and different games to begin with because of that.

I do not have fun simply pressing the A button to win when Pokemon tries to sell the idea that being a Pokemon Trainer is a serious endeavor only for those who "wanna be the very best like no one ever was."

I do not have fun "catching them as real test and training them is my cause" when catching monsters takes no effort and yet maxing monsters is so inconvenient.

I do not have fun "travelling across the land searching far and wide" when this "land" is a barren, uninteresting hallway.

I do not have fun with "each Pokemon to understand the power that's inside" when it's so easy to understand that so many monsters are borderline unusable low tier garbage that struggle to etch out a niche for themselves.

So as a result, I take my time and money to games that that actuallt applies to that have provided me way more fun. If Pokemon could even be THAT, we wouldn't be having this debacle to begin with.
People that constantly and very vocally get angry at a game, clearly don't enjoy it and yet continue to play it instead of doing anything about it are probably the most pathetic.

Doesn't matter what game it is.

You commonly see that kind of behavior out of Pokemon Showdown players.

They'll get angry at the other player for getting a random crit, random miss or losing because of a random damage roll despite the fact of it being neither player's fault.

YOU'RE the one that chose to play a game where that kind of thing is a problem, so be mad at the game.
    Ridley64
    Ridley64
Be mad at the RNG gods.
    DrCoeloCephalo
    DrCoeloCephalo
The RNG exists in the game in the first place because of the game designers. A random number generator in a game isn't anywhere near godhood when some moronic human is what programmed it.
Westerners that are losing their minds over games like Palworld despite Pokemon itself being just as morally corrupt and being a Dragon Quest knockoff will never not be funny to me.
    Pokelego999
    Pokelego999
I doubt that's the reasoning but you do you.
    DrCoeloCephalo
    DrCoeloCephalo
It kinda is the reason, so I will do me.
I explained to a game dev whom is a Pokemon fan making his own monster collector all the stuff Yo-Kai Watch games do and the free DLC that comes with them.

He is now amazed at what the games were able to accomplish.

Glubbfubb Glubbfubb Janx_uwu Janx_uwu hey, I'm the developer of the game here, and the guy who is very impressed with the Yokai Watch developers and the quantity of content I've heard they churn out. In case you're interested, my twitter for the game is @GrimmlinsGame and thediscord can be joined at: https://t.co/pACIN2uirq?amp=1

It does play somewhat like Pikmin with the manage multiple monsters feel. I'm still iterating on the combat, but it's meant to be a lot to think about/manage at once much like Pikmin. It's kind of a blend between a Pikmin-like system, MOBA controls, and monster tamers like Pokemon obviously. And the riding lets me put in some crazy platforming exploration as well.

I love how scrubs angry about Wario Waft try to default to Little Mac's KO Punch.

As if Little Mac SHOULDN'T have the option to hold onto it anyway since the character is such hot garbage.

DK and Samus get to hold their charge attacks, tho it would be way better if they could more consistently combo into them so they could be all the better and more satisfying to play in a very unsatisfying game that is Ultimate.

Makes me happy people still get upset a character like Wario with such limited options demands so much skill and patience in what is still a campy, defensive, mashy mess that is Ultimate.
