Seriously? I love the "almost Don Bluth" cartoonish look about the game. It adds to the amazing and awesome sense of humor in the game.
To wit: have you ever seen the "Meet the..." videos? They're as good an example as any of the awesome sense of humor and craziness Valve has with the game. If you haven't at least seen "Meet the Soldier," I'd definitely recommend checking it out. It's available on Youtube and Teamfortress.com.
I'm not in the business of overhyping games. But I would have to say that TF2 might be one of the most entertaining multiplayer games of all time, and it's ridiculously inexpensive (and often on sale); both alone and as part of The Orange Box. I won't guarantee you'll like it, but I'd highly recommend giving it a shot for the free weekend. After all, you've got nothing to lose.
I would actually highly recommend Team Fortress 2 to you. I'm not even a big FPS fan, but even I absolutely love this game.
To assuage your fears, it is most definitely not too difficult. Sure, there's a little learning curve for each class because they all play completely differently from each other, but that also means that there's something for everyone, and you can see who you like best and who best fits you.
Best of all, they're going to be doing a free weekend for it this week (I believe it's this week - check Steam for details), so now would be the perfect chance to try it out and see if it suits your style. And if so, be sure to let me know, and we'll play together sometime!
