  • Reminder that we are submitting variant clone fighters and stages based on official Smash stages + voting on the contents of our E3 demo!
If Smash was to introduce seperate strong and light buttons, I feel charging like Smash attacks should be a variable thing per strong move like how rapid and triple jabs are. So, for example, Mario's strong forward air would be chargable but not his down ground strong.
We are submitting variant fighters and reskinned stages!
Mother 3 is the only example I can think of where a game turning the edge to 11 between instalments worked - and that's only really because, for the most part, it was fully sincere about its dark themes and the impact they have on the characters in the universe, not just trying to be cool or shock people. Having a rotating cast and only really being connected by the prior games' villains also helps, I don't think I'd take a story as dark as Mother 3's seriously with Ness or Ninten and their respective friends.
Crash in Smash is weird to me because he is a character I would be excited for, but at the same time I don't think I'd trust modern-day Sakurai to make a good moveset for him - moreso than any of the other characters I'd want except maybe Jill - and I honestly only really want him for that slight barely 0.1% chance he opens the doors to Dingodile or Ripper Roo later.

You have no clue how long I've been waiting for this CEO to openly say some truly capitalist BS so the cult can end and the Wonderful-World-of-Disney-in-Colour illusion about 2000s/2010s Nintendo can be shattered once and for all. This will probably be the only time I'm ever happy someone wants to make NFTs.

To be fair, Reggie never mentioned NFTs in the Bored Ape sense in the article you're talking about; Just stuff like selling Animal Crossing islands. Don't get me wrong, that's still pretty dumb (especially since the whole point of video games is... well, actually playing them), but it's not like he's promoting selling PNGs.

But still... Dang. My entire vision of Nintendo as a whole has been shattered already over these past few weeks, but I didn't imagine I'd lose some respect for Reggie as a person. I get that Nintendo loyalists should really understand the company's downfalls and not blindly ignore/defend them, but I don't think it's something worth celebrating, either.

How can anyone seriously say anything positive about the phrase"Play to own" or "Play to earn" without feeling like a ghoul
I was thinking of doing a "grassy fields" Smash stage sweep, replacing most of the grassy fields stages (sans certain super iconic ones like Green Hill or Duck Hunt) with other stages that would function the same

    Wario Wario Wario
Spiral Mountain - remains the same, but when the Gruntilda bust is in view it starts to storm and rain
Mushroom Kingdom 2 - remains the same, but uses NES graphics (not a change to make it less grassy-plains-ish, moreso just something that should’ve been done in the first place)
Figure-8 Circuit - rethemed to Mario Kart Stadium
    Mario Circuit - remains intact
Rainbow Cruise - no visible land below
3D Land - Beginning takes place in a snow level, everything after the note block is the same
Golden Plains - Completely changed to Wario’s Castle.
Paper Mario - The first portion is Toad Town, with a windmill placed there.
Mushroom Kingdom U - rethemed to Painted Pipeworks. The first part is the only part completely rethemed, the rest are just given a painted appearance
    Mario Galaxy - remains intact
Super Mario Maker - all Mario Maker world types are included, and they alternate with the game
Yoshi’s Island Melee - has a forest background, foreground is intact
Yoshi’s Story - Rethemed to Cloud Cruising
Yoshi’s Island Brawl - left intact
Spirit Train - takes place in the Ocean Realm
    Dream Land - remains intact
Green Greens - rethemed to Lakitu’s Stage from Tetris Attack
Dream Land GB - Green Greens remains intact, but it shows for a few less seconds because of the addition of the title screen at the start
    Distant Planet - remains intact
Garden of Hope - has a day/night cycle
    Gaur Plain - always night
    Duck Hunt - remains intact
Green Hill Zone - remains intact
Windy Hill Zone - rethemed to Star Light Zone. The Windmill is removed but its platforms and their pattern stays
I don't think the Ruined Dragon is as out of place in the Mario universe as people say it is - it kinda reminds me of stuff like the Greedy in the Raggedy Ann movie; the Spirit Book in the Care Bears movie; or the Smooze in the My Little Pony 80s movie, a villain who's appearance and threat level is a little out of place in the overall cutesy world, but that adds to them as villain because of their out-of-place nature, and they add to the overall world by showing the darker magic you'd expect in any other fantasy universe.

However, I do think it should've been later into the game. Maybe as a post-game boss in Darker Side, or the second-to-last boss before Bowser.
Just a reminder to submit 2010s ally contacts, new stage cameos, stage music and/or Yoshi stage names + vote on how enemies from Adventure Mode will appear outside of it if you haven't already!
Also, tomorrow will have an E3-related job so stay tuned for that!
Just to remind y'all: We are submitting stage cameos/easter eggs, ally contacts (Assist Trophies) from the 2010s, new names for the Yoshi's Island stages, and music for the Mario is Missing and Mario & Yoshi stages!

So, do they have the rights to use cropped Google Images of Jimmy Neutron; Rocky the Flying Squirrel; and the Smurfs in the Chip N' Dale movie? If so, why did they put a parody of Gumby as the cop instead of just Gumby? Especially considering that last I checked, Rocky & Bullwinke and Gumby are both owned by Dreamworks.

Also a Lion King 2019 character has no right to tell people they have dead mocap eyes
Continuing from my last post about the PTE XL roster, my rerun era/pre-Cartoon Cartoons pick would be Daffy Duck - having him over Bugs makes him a pretty surprising, funny pick (even if not to the extent that an educational mascot is); and he would make perfect sense for Captain Planet's deus-ex-machina appearance in story mode because, after all, what would be more of a Daffy Duck move than having the power to beat the final boss and easily end the story early, but only showing up at the last second so you can hog all the credit?
I don't think there's any roster I've ever had more mixed feelings on than the PTE XL roster

    • There are some REALLY cool picks here - Toilenator; Scotsman; Monkey; and Hoss Delgado are incredible choices I don't think many would go for.
    • As somewhat of a cartoon boomer I don't really mind the lack of Adventure Time/Gumball/Regular Show but it does come off as really weird when the (at the time) new Ben 10 is also there.
    • A lot of main characters kinda feel like they're there just because "main character" - Mac & Bloo are the worst offenders here, but Billy & Mandy and Flapjack also both feel like they could be done without
    • Having only one KND member is strange, but I think going for the villains instead was a good call
    • In general, I like how many villains are playable here
    • Having multiple duo characters but making the PPGs seperate is a really weird choice, especially when their show has one of the best comedy rogues galleries in cartoon history and their size + flight makes them perfect trio fighter material.
    • No second Chowder or Fosters rep is really weird - Johnny Bravo at least doesn't have a big cast to work with and wasn't playable in the 3DS version, but Chowder is the first world in story mode and Fosters is built entirely around the concept of a creative ensomble cast
    • Captain Planet is a super fun pick but feels like a bit of a slap in the face when he's the only non-CN WB rep and not Scooby Doo; Fred Flintstone; Bugs Bunny; Tom & Jerry; or something like that.
    • The lack of Courage and Eds is really glaring, Cow & Chicken also feel like a weird absence but to a lesser extent.
There's a (by accident) seasonally fitting stage easter egg/cameo job + a job about modes or items that can use enemies + Peach's animations! We're also voting on Yoshi's stages, the next dojo reveals and a Klump moveset
I feel a Duck Hunt reboot, if it were to exist, should play into the "dark with a cute exterior" trope Nintendo is known for, but instead of the apocalyptic and supernatural themes Nintendo usually goes for, it'd be crime and gangs that get the emphasis. Not only do almost all the zapper games have some kind of organised crime theme, but a quadrupedal dog only really works as a shooter protagonist if it has something to do with loyalty, something you see referenced a lot in detective and crime stories. (like protecting/avenging their incapacitated/murdered owner from a gang for example)

No 4th wall shenanigans like in Smash either, the shooting would probably be handled by the duck as to give the existing brand name a meaning when it's cowboys and mafia bosses being shot (and getting covered in soot, not dying) instead of waterfowl
I see Nintendo fans complain a lot that (usually older) people use "Nintendo" as a general term for gaming, but honestly they're just as bad with using "Atari" as a general term for all games released before the NES; or "PlayStation game/character" for any game released on Sony hardware.

Same goes for Nintendo fans complaining about people generalising "anime swordfighters" before themselves generalising "gritty" shooter and fantasy games.
I've been working on this game(?) for the past two days, and even though it is just a meme based on a bad pun; party snack; and an early 21st century pop culture icon with waning relevancy (and a direct clone of the KFC game I made a few months earlier), I'm extremely happy with how it turned out. Creating a full logo title cutscene; balancing gameplay; fixing bugs; adding visual flare and easter eggs; choosing the funniest sound effects and music; writing dumb dialogue, genuinely a beautiful experience.
It's a little too early to say this and it's extremely subject to change, but here's my current plan for SMSB DLC:
    1. Pace is slowed down (update every 2 days seems appealing)
    2. Begins with a 1st party Smash veteran as early purchase DLC (May also make Sonic and Banjo elegible due the prior's cameos and the latter's close connections to the Mario universe)
    3. There will be further guests, but none will be video game characters. Aiming more for something akin to SMM's Shaun the Sheep/anime girl/Mercedes Mystery Mushrooms.
    4. Will not revolve entirely around fighters like other creation threads' DLC cycles. The stage focus will likely still be in play.
    5. Some kind of Splatfest-esque feature
    6. Some kind of cosmetic DLC like Mii Costumes, probably won't be full alt costumes. (making people pay for alts when custom colours are a feature is pretty scummy lmao) I do have an idea for this, but I think it'd be better to vote on.
    7. Assist Trophies will be promotable, stage hazards are more a "we'll get there when we get there" case TBH I have feeling Nabbit will make base game
    8. DLC clones may exist in some form - current idea "each fighter comes with either 2 stages, or 1 stage and a clone of themselves or a base game fighter" while clones of absent veterans would be budget content and wouldn't come with stages.
    9. Small QOL improvements (think like SSBU adding the option to play any song on Battlefield) will play a major part
    10. Undecided on items and ally contacts
    11. Battle pass? Maybe?
    12. May or may not have an extra element of a fictional playerbase hungry for certain features and characters - though I have no clue how to impliment this without it coming off as (or outright being) me skewering the submissions and votes a certain way. May use an RNG generator for this.
The stage selection in Ultimate must be really weird if you're a younger player unfamiliar with previous Smash games. Why do so many stages take place in the same location? Why are they in that weird order? What's with the blocky stages at the top of the list and why aren't the other blocky stages with them? What does "(Brawl)" and "(Melee)" mean for the Yoshi stages?
    Janx_uwu
    Janx_uwu
As a kid I had no idea what Melee meant. I saw Melee stages in Brawl, but as far as I was concerned that just meant they were somewhat unfinished (on account of them not looking much like the Brawl stages). I only had 64, Brawl, and 3DS, so for the longest time I just thought Brawl was the second game. Wasn't until I started watching Scykoh's Glitchfest marathon on the Smash series when I realized "Hey, those weird stages in Brawl came from an actual game!"
We are looking for Yoshi stage submissions! Think you have what it takes to give the lovable omnivore a new, unique home stage? We also welcome music submissions for the Dire Dire Docks stage; + alt costumes and costumes for Klump!
The more time passes the more confident I am that NASB is just gonna do a mega-update with items; crossplay; VA; and maybe one of the Power Hour kids at the same time. There's no way items at least would've taken that long since they were near-finished in the base game files and now have models.
    Torgo the Bear
    Torgo the Bear
I actually always kinda expected this ever since the items didn't drop alongside Shredder. I feel like they'd probably be dropped alongside a DLC reveal at least, though. Not to say they haven't potentially had enough time for the first character to be finished, though... eh, I don't know.
Of all my Smash takes, this is probably the hottest: the next Smash, if it chooses to continue emphasising 3rd party content like Ultimate's DLC did, should be multiplatform. That'd allow characters who'd otherwise be unprofitable (like a Sony or true Xbox rep) find their fandoms; put even more eyes on Smash than the existing, Twitter-destroying, fandom (even if IMO that'd be a bad thing, great idea profit-wise though): and would still sell Nintendo consoles since the wide cast of Nintendo characters would be properly exposed to non-Nintendo players for the first time. Also Smash on PC with easily accessible mods would be a godsend.

Honestly, more multiplat games from Nintendo (and the other console makers) would also be pretty cool. Even if the next Smash isn't 3rd party focused I'd still kinda want it multiplat. Never gonna happen with current Nintendo, though. 😔

    FazDude
I definitely wouldn't be opposed to a multiplatform Smash, but as Baysha said, that's a pipe dream if I've ever heard one. It's also kinda why I think a Smash that leans super-heavily into being a "celebration of gaming" isn't realistic; An ideal one would be multiplatform, and Nintendo almost certainly wouldn't be okay having Mario and Link appear on Xbox, even if Nintendo and Microsoft are all buddy-buddy now.

I don't think the take itself is even that hot; Like I said, I'd love to see a major crossover platform fighter go multiplatform (heck, you wouldn't even need the Smash branding; Just have vidya game characters fight each other and you're golden), but I don't think it'll happen unless there's a shift in Nintendo's philisophy (read: not gonna happen).
While he was once one of my favourite DLCs during the release cycle, I'm honestly starting to think of Banjo as more and more of a questionable Smash pick as time goes on. He's only really there because of a pre-established connection to Nintendo and not because he's actually a fun character or a notable part of gaming history; he doesn't properly show what Microsoft has brought the gaming industry and if anything his portrayal in Smash is just a weapon against them for Nintendo fans; and while Ridley and Rool stood the test of time from their first proposition to inclusion, everything unique Banjo provides had already been done by other characters at that point. It's honestly kinda laughable that they'd choose Banjo over Master Chief; Marcus Fenix; or Clippy even removing the "celebration of gaming" lie - hell, if we're talking 3rd parties that once were owned by Nintendo, Tetromino makes more sense in virtually every way.
    Dinoman96
    Dinoman96
He got in because he was still very popular amongst older Nintendo fans that felt he was an important part of Nintendo's history that was tragically taken away by Microsoft (yeah yeah Nintendo was willing to sell Rare off, I know), that's it lol. On the Smash ballot he was only second to Sora (at least in terms of newcomers), and thus in that context, he was way more popular than Clippy or Chief or Tetromino or whatever the hell. Not much more to it than that.
    C
    ceterisparibus
On top of popularity, he was probably pretty cheap compared to the myriad of candidates in pass 1 (surprisingly, when you look at the 1st pass everything other than DQ seemed cheap/easy to get - atlus milks their IP worse than a dying cow, SNK was a non-factor and byleth is 1st party). He was a good mix of being heavily wanted by the audience (or those who bothered to vote) and relatively cheap (being a dead IP and all).

    Lionfranky
I am not sure about price factor. Steve should be pretty up there with other expensive candidate. MS did allow Chief to be in Minecraft and Fortnite. I believe Nintendo didn't want to blow load that too much at this stage. There is merit in saving Chief for later.
