  • If that's the niche you're aiming for with the work as a whole then hell yeah, go for it with no limits! Sexualise and fetishize whatever you want, regardless of societal norms.

If it's in a work where the intent is to actually have characters, make a fun game, tell a story, e.t.c. - especially a sequel to a less sexualised work - just don't. You'll simply isolate fans who aren't there for that and ruin your work's reputation.
What anime fans hate about western character design: Yooka-Laylee
What cartoon fans hate about eastern character design: Xenoblade

Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.

I found the character design in Yooka Laylee clever and funny.

As far as game character designs, there seems to be a good amount of hatred from both parties for western designed game characters like Abby from The Last of Us 2, as far as I can tell.

TBH I think Yooka's character designs are a mixed bag. Characters like Dr. Quack, Capital B and Trowzer are really appealing, but then there's characters like Vendi, Dr. Puzz, and uh... the game's titular protagonists
There's this weird, decades-recurrent trend of Disney movies beginning with an easy to grasp but awful message and then changing to a harder to swallow but much more useful message half way through, but the awful message sticks with people more and ends up being used more in marketing material.

"Hakuna Matata", "Seize your moment", "What do you want to be remembered for", "Anyone can cook", so forth.

I think the reason this seems to be especially true to Pixar is that Pixar movies like to find something new to say, or to challenge preconceived notions. Soul asks "is it really healthy to live for just one thing?", and Ratatouie asks "what does 'anyone can cook' really mean?". But people are stubborn and just don't like having their preconceived notions challenged, so many just miss the message entirely.
Considering the time frame of the reveal, it would've been really awkward if the ARMS rep was Byte and Barq.
    Disney made an Up anime.

Anyone who says Animaniacs didn't have political jokes never watched Animaniacs.

I think a lot of people don't understand that the problem with the reboot's political jokes aren't that they're there or that they have a LibLeft leaning, but rather that there's too many of them compared to the original show and they's straight up not funny, just being the same "orange skin tiny hands" jokes that have been repeated for years.

Donald Trump, unfortunately, was so comically inept in real life that jokes had little to exaggerate on.
People who like clearly and exaggeratedly sexualised characters: "IT'S NOT SEXUAL, I SWEAR! THEY HAVE A BRILLIANT CHARACTER ARC AND POWERS!"

People who like characters from children's media who lack any remotely sexual attributes and may or may not have been specifically designed to be ugly or gross: "Yeah, it's sexual. Duh. You DON'T have the hots for Mung Daal?"

I mean, humans are sexual creatures. We generally are attracted to each others' bodies. Boobs jiggle. This is just fact. We are aroused by the jiggle, but the jiggle happens whether we like it or not.
To reduce a female character down to her sexual desirability is the actual sexism.
Hell, I see people on Facebook say that Trump's Press Secretary was better than Biden's based solely on physical attractiveness rather than the quality of their job.

I swear, these people have to have no sex life if they go around rating the sexiness of ****ing cartoons.
Like, I had an anime crush on Hinata as a kid because she was so soft, kind, and shy, but I'm an adult now. There are REAL girls out there.
I was so bored during the direct I made up a fake joke Direct on Google Docs.

One of my joke ideas became real (that being Nintendo reminding you that Hades exists for no reason)

Thinking back about Nintendo Directs I really don't have many good memories of them, just losing sleep to watch tedious anime RPGs and indie sizzle reels. What I'm trying to say is...

    Nintendo Direct was never good.
You know what I would've done in Sakurai's shoes? Two passes, one for more realistic and anime-esque fighters, and the other for goofier and cartoonier fighters, released concurrently. Good way to keep variety and make sure nobody gets something they don't want from the Fighters Pass gamble.

The problems is not all characters fit cleanly into those boxes, plus it seems kind of limiting.

OK, how about some legit arguments for these characters over Pyra?

-Bubsy would provide a fun, even if not unique, playstyle as a slippery glass cannon. He also represetns the mascot platformer boom, an important part of gaming history.
-Skylanders has quite a lot of unique characters that could make a full pass of good characters gameplay wise at the very least.
-Goku has been highly requested for decades and has a devoted following who support him in spite of his complete illegibility
-H has appeared in almost every video game ever made, being a common Latin letter. It is recognisable to any literate person in an English speaking country.
-Zavoc would be a second representative for one of the most beloved game series of all time, one which has infamously got the shaft in the world of Smash
-Grandpa Lou's excercise frequently running 15 miles would make him an interesting hit-and-run speedster with a heavy weight thanks to his old age. He would also be the first Jewish fighter in Smash.

    Janx_uwu
I would hate all of those timelines (excluding Goku and Bubsy) but at least they're not Pyra
The more anime-esque characters they add to Smash, the more I hunger for Peppino in Smash. We need a character who's truly 100% cartoony to compensate for all this garbage.
Not to start a debate or flame war, but I'm just saying...

Geno has about as much plot relevance to Mario RPG as the Minions had in the original Despicable Me. Just a side character who saves the day at the last second to justify their existence.

But this is a plot-driven RPG with twists and turns, not a platformer. Compare Geno to Mallow, who acually has a character arc and plot relevance outside of the start and end.

Ever heard of the trope Ensemble Dark Horse?
So the Cruella DeVile movie is just Joker for kids? OK then.
The Chuck E. Cheese channel is honestly some of the highest quality content for kids on YouTube. The songs are catchy, there's plenty of easter eggs for the surprisingly large adult CEC fandom, there's a lot of charming animatons, and the educational content is super informative for its target demo.
They say "flanderisation", the exaggeration of a character's single flaw or quirk to become their main personality trait, is an inherently bad writing trope that must be avoided at all costs... to that, I provide you with a rebuttal in the form of a single transparent PNG.

There are so many 3D platformers (especially ones involving hedgehogs) that could've had a majority of their problems fixed with 360 movement being swapped for 8-directional movement,
    Janx_uwu
    Janx_uwu
Wait, was that an issue with Sonic Adventure games? I never found 360 degree movement to be an issue, in fact it really made the experience. If anything, I really hate how stiff the controls feel in Sonic Forces (8 directions).
    Wario Wario Wario
    Wario Wario Wario
Yeah, that was my main (but not my only) problem with the Adventure games. Sonic feels slippery and often bumps into walls and falls off edges.
    Janx_uwu
    Janx_uwu
I guess I could understand why-take all the directions of Mario 64 and give it speed and momentum, not the easiest thing in the world to control. Could just be an acquired taste though.
Not to say I fully disagree. I really hate high-speed sections of the Adventure games that give you full control over the hedgehogs as it's easy to knock into stuff. So maybe in a remake, add in a "High-Speed Mode" which limits you to eight directions when going at max speed.
Most anti-AT promotion arguments are utterly nonsensical and generally come from a lack of knowledge on game design and development.
I don’t really want Ryu Hayabusa in Smash because he really strikes me as a Simon sort of character where he’s extremely accurate to the source material and as such more a list of references than an actual platform fighting game character.
    Otoad64
    Otoad64
imo being extremely accurate to the source material is a good thing
There’s so much to take in this single box art

    -Anthropomorphic rabbit
-Fat stereotype boy EATING FOOD DURING THE GAME
-Token black 90s kid with the token black 90s kid flat top
-The split of “Boys Mode” and “Girls Mode”, as well as the use of pink and hearts to signify “Girls Mode”
-The title and logo blatantly plagiarising Bad News Bears, a movie with the N word in it.
-It technically reads Bad B News Baseball
-Macaulay Culkin’s animated character from the Pagemaster is there for some reason
-The popcorn, give that it’s placed behind the rabbit, could not have logically came from either, the audience or fat stereotype boy - unless they’re throwing the popcorn like tomatoes or something
-There is no character the blue beanie hat could belong to.
-The baseball is flying in reverse order, and isn’t close enough to the bat to have just been hit by it.
    -Shiny dust
-Macaulay Culkin from the Pagemaster has a muzzle for some reason
