Frostbite 2019, the latest of the now three year old series, was a great showcase of where the current meta of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is headed. While Genesis was the first major to feature Ultimate, Frostbite is a whole patch removed, and players are more intimate with the game than before. In other words, Genesis was a good chance for high-level play to be explored, while Frostbite was a good look at how high-level play has adapted and will adapt. Beyond that, its high quality production was a delight to behold, and its Top 8 was a rollercoaster of close calls, flashy finishes and brilliant strategy. Glitch, one of the more unique tournament series for Super Smash Bros., returned for its sixth and largest iteration on January 19th. Each tournament, organized by VGBootCamp and Xanadu Games, has a decent focus on side events that are a bit unconventional, such as 3v3 or Morph-Meter. The game of focus for past events has been Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, but Glitch 6 was the first to mainline Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It’s also the first of the series to break over 255 entrants, and more than double it with 551 sign-ups. Here, we will give a brief overview of the players who finished Top 8, and the journeys they took through Top 128.

SSC 2018 Brawl Recap

This is the first year at SSC where top 8 was dominated by active Brawl players rather than Brawl retirees. Out of the top 8, the only player who doesn’t currently grind Brawl over other games is Nairo. Players like Joe “Toronto Joe” Cribari, Zeyan “Zan” Nizami, Kyle “Gunnermaniac” Runnels and the aforementioned Seagull Joe all made great showings and took out currently SSBBRanked players on their way to top 8. As the Brawl scene has diverged somewhat from the Smash 4 scene, we’ve seen players rise up to the challenge and work to optimize the game despite its relative inactivity.
Another Super Smash Con is on the books. What happened this year for Brawl at SSC?.

With 427 attendees, the tournament marked a new high for the ambitious Super Smash Bros. Brawl mod, and the tournament itself was even streamed on Twitch, a task many other PM tournaments have shied away from in recent years. While the organization and attention the tournament received definitely made a statement on their own, the results had a lot to say as well.
