I play the 3DS Smash 4 a LOT I mean if I'm not playing Fire Emblem or another game, then I'm always practicing on Smash 3DS. So I like to use my #1 go to controller choice on Smash WII U: My 3DS. The problem: I worry what controller I'd use at an official tournament, where 3DS controllers are often illegal at times. It's understandable that 3DS controllers can cause certain problems like wireless lag, or set up time. From personal experience I haven't had a single connection problem when playing with it on the WII U. And it usually takes less than a minute to set up too. Also, I can almost NEVER get used to the GC controller.

Well all those thought aside, which controller do you guys should I pick up when my 3ds is out of the question?

Ayy, a fellow 3DS player! I mainly just play 3DS because smash 4 is the only reason I would want a Wii U :p However, people seem to really enjoy the gamecube controller.

Pro controllers are usually the go-to if a GC controller isn't an option. Aside from the complaints they get at tourneys and such, they're good controllers. Plus, you can perform bidou techs with them if you're into that.

Alternatively, you can try getting used to GC controllers as they are the best option. But since you said you can't get used to them, a pro controller might be your best bet.

I love the 3DS, but it's inefficient for a controller at a tournament. I say there shouldn't be a problem with having them be legal though.

I, too, only use 3DS controller since I don't own a Wii U, and up until a month ago I would have totally argued that there is no reason to ban 3DS controllers from any event, as I had never had a problem. I had been to tournies with over 50 people and no problems emerged. Then I went to 2GGT Fresh Saga, with over 300 people, and the 3DS just . . . didn't . . . work! There were so many signals traveling through such a confined space that I would often get horrendous input lag, and made the 3DS unusable! People ban 3DS controllers from large tournies not because they cause problems with other controllers, or they take too long to set up, but because it causes problems for the user! I was planning on bringing my 3DS to EVO, but now I know I need to buy a GameCube or pro controller.

In terms of good replacements, the pro controller is the closest comparison, especially if you have the NEW 3DS since the C-stick is in the same general area, and it has two buttons on each shoulder. However, I tried out the GameCube controller at Fresh saga having basically never used one before for any reason, and my play wasn't really hampered at all. I was surprised myself that I actually found myself liking the GameCube controller more! Half because of my ADD and I like how the sticks and buttons rebound and make a noise, but I was playing just fine with it. The pro controller is objectively a better controller honestly, but something about the GameCube controller was amazing for me, and I prefer it, so just pick whatever controller you feel most comfortable with.

The Wii remote with nunchuck is worth mentioning, as it does have some neat benefits, but most people agree that a more traditional controller is better. I like to use it casually though!

Personally, I prefer the Wii U gamepad over anything (customized control scheme), but I don't think I'd ever make it into a tourney with that.

Problem is that a lot of the tournaments I've attended say controllers must be wired to ensure no johns from either player and because the wireless may have more input lag than the wired. Im all for letting players bring in their 3DS and playing with Wii U players since I know alot of people either dont have a Wii - U or cant afford to buy one. The more players there are a tournament, the more fun it is (and more players for me to body)

The main reason why I don't push to use the 3ds or the wiiu pro controller is that I feel like i'd get laughed at. If only they had a wire, that would prevent weird input lag.

What exactly is the problem you have with GC controllers? Honest question.haha I use my 3ds alot too myself and actually prefer it's button layout over GC so i can relate to where you're coming from.

but just so you know in tournaments where 3ds are banned, usually means Pro controllers and Gamepads or all types of wireless remotes are banned as well.

So your only viable option is indeed a GC controller. (or Xbox/Ps4 remote via converter/adapter) :/

Wait... so you're telling me there are GameCube controller-only Smash 4 tournaments? Crud.

Pretty much. I mean, it depends on the person running the tournament, Just ask. Though in larger tournaments wireless should be unallowed. At my local there are usually a little more than just 20 people and there is still instances of interference from the multiple setups and gamepads.

I was thinking about EVO, in which case only GameCube and pro controllers are allowed. The pro controller doesn't suffer from input lag at all from my experience. I haven't found a tourney that bans pro controllers yet, are there any notable examples?

I'd rather not know about this kind of stuff, because I'm planning to get me a Pro Controller soon, since I learned the game with GamePad controls.
