I personally think that; with how societal norms and values tend to work and how government laws work; sanity, or more so mental illness, can be just another form of discrimination against the smart and some of those trying to do good. I mean, society and governments as well as governmental laws aren’t flexible to realize that, and though norms, values and laws are broken, that does not mean the society or government who created them are always right. It may seem like some people are mentally ill, but technically speaking, they may be doing the right thing, even if it is not allowed.
Furthermore, just like how African Americans and other people of color are often discriminated against, as well as people of different things like different religions too, people who are doing something illegal or bad, but are doing something good, can be discriminated against by people who cling onto societal values and such, government laws, etc. and are not able to understand why such other people’s actions are actually good. Now, I am by no means saying that crime is good and should be done, but some actions, especially if it is for a good cause whether or not it is crime related and preferably not crime related, can be for good reasons and can have good impacts on the future if done right. However, people may not understand and even label such people as and mentally ill, when they are not necessarily so.
That said, good and evil are more relative and situational, despite what many may think. It is just that the many people who run the governments, and people who abide by society norms and all do not realize that. It is almost as if everything to them is around perfect, when it is not. Society, governments and their laws do not make exceptions, and people who do what is perceived as wrong aren’t always in the wrong themselves, nor are they necessarily mentally unsound, insane or bad guys. Anyway, remember Galileo, who was put under house arrest for his scientific endeavors, all by the Catholic Church at the time. He was not mentally ill, or a bad guy. He was more so correct than the church itself, about what he had proposed scientifically.
Now, unlike people of other races and such, I realize the discrimination about people who may be seen as mentally ill might not be fully comparable to those groups, as some of such people are actually bad guys, and it can be hard to make exceptions. Still, society and the government are not always right, especially in terms of norms, values and laws, and some people labeled mentally ill are not always so. They just want to do good things and may want the best for something, even if it is not acceptable to others. People are often wrongly labeled as mentally ill, as society and the government are not flexible enough for these things and they don’t really make exceptions at all even if actions perceived as bad are for a good cause. Labeling people doing good a different way as mentally ill can often be an excuse to not listen to or accept them, and some higher ups in society and government don’t even do research or bother to understand who may actually be in the wrong in any situation. That is quite sad.
