I'm pretty new as an user, but i've been visiting for quite some time.

I Decided to create my account now since I got Brawl last week and wanted to find some friends to play with. But I have some gripes about the friend finding options on the site so I thought I'd voice my opinion and see if i can get some support. It's quite a lengthy read but try and read it.

The friend finder is a great tool for finding people to play with is always updated and helps you find people, but it pretty much works on the short term. Since you can only have 64 friends you pretty much have to either find good friends you can play for long time or people you can play once or twice and then delete them. Which is kind of messy (it's the wii's fault).

Also it pretty much assumes that anyone can play each other which is half true if you don't take distance and lag into account. Sure if I like someone on this board as a friend I can add him as a friend and play with him, but if I want to meet users who live near me i'm out of options.

So my proposal is basically this:
It shouldn't only help me find who's online (which is great) but also maybe allow users to use a timezone filter or something that would help find people near you.

Also add a way to find poeple offline who live nearby or by location, for example I live in Dominican Republic, there's a lot of smash players here but finding them will be near impossible, and the place in the profile where I can select my location is a text field not a combo box so anyone can type either "Domincan Republic", "DR", "Republica Dominicana", "Rep. Dom." or in the US things like "LA" and "Los Angeles". So by limiting the way people write their location and allowing us to find people based on that, everyone can have a better experience and a bigger chance of finding friends they don't need to delete to make space for more. At the same time they also don't have to worry as much by work/school hours as much.

I for one think that that is a great idea. I can't seem to find anyone that lives nearby. Of course, I wouldn't know HOW to put that in, but I hope someone else can.

Facebook App

There is a terrific facebook app that does this, I just added it yesterday. If you have facebook just search for "Super Smash Bros Brawl Net " and add it. It gets people from your province/state and you exchange friend codes. I added 12 people last night, had a bunch of person battles and not even one bit of lag.

Definitely check it out if you have facebook.

Being a good little conformist
Location is a very interesting issue, and using timezones is an interesting interim solution. I've thought about adding a place for you to specify your postal code so that the system can find people who are close to you, and that would probably make it a bit easier to find people near you.

Your best bet for now is encouraging people to fill out the location field (and making sure you use it yourself) and using that to find close matches. I'll definitely keep thinking about ways to make it easier to find people who may not be online--don't forget, if you do find someone on the boards who you like to play, you can add them to your buddy list and they'll be highlighted for you on the Friend Finder. Regional Zones can also be pretty helpful--see if there's a thread for sharing friend codes in your region.

Thanks for the tip. I have that app from facebook, but that would be like saying that the best way to make the friend finder better is to go use facebook.
