I'm not sure why he just doesn't do it or at least try it. My little brother was kind of annoyed when I first edge-guarded. Then he started to do it. The end result...

The matches were more intense = A whole lot of fun.

Same. After a few times of dying because the edge was being guarded or hogged, my little brother now often edgehogs when someone is off the stage. Actually, I guess he dosen't really think about it, since he often does it even when it's obvious he's just gonna get hit off the ledge...but still, complaining about edgeguarding? Pah!

just because your brother is better then you doesn't mean he isn't a scrub. Being a scrub is dependent on the mindset of the player, not the skill.

If he wasn't bias in his description of a scrub I'd use that as a source against them.

I know people cling to that article, but seriously, just by reading Sirlin's "advice" more carefully it's clear he has pent up frustration against a group he isn't apart of, nor does he differentiate the difference between a casual, semi casual or anyone between competitive and whiny noob.

It would be better to just tell of the brothers as whiny idiots.

edit: This isn't to say his point isn't warranted, I just don't like how he expressed it.

Really something that's in the "how to play" video cannot ever be considered cheap.

If they all think edge-guarding is cheap then what do they do if you stall off stage?

just annoy them with that till they come get you. Then call them out for edge-guarding you.

take sonic, give them a "your too slow" then stall under the level.

I'm sure some people here can produce much more annoying offstage stall tactics. Rob would be good, Meta knight. Find one ya like and make a game out of it.

very true but I mean instead of incorporating effective arrow spam with moves, ill have fun and only use that and run away and such to piss the noobs off.

I have a friend who resets our matches all the time because edge gaurding/spiking/ledge hogging/grabs/Mario's cape(I don't even use Mario)/shield grabbing/pretty much anything I do that he can't is cheap. He even gets mad when I use the Sakuri combo. It is insanely annoying.

Ask your bro to play some stock matches instead of timed matches (since it sounds like that is what you are doing). When you are one of the last 2, edge-guard and edge-hog as much as possible. Whoever wins, right?

Actually stock matches will fix your problem pretty quickly as the players learn to take down whoever is weakest, however they can. Also even if you get ganged up on it's still worth it in a stock match ;)

so...edge-guard & edge-hog constantly, & accept the ganging that follows - eventually someone else will do it to you and it will all be fair game

According to your brother then, Mario is GOD!!!

Seriously though, edgeguarding isn't cheap. Maybe if you used a few CG infinites on him his opinion on edgeguarding would change a little, and not even CGs/CG infinites are really "cheap".

You totally asploded my mind when you said your brother was better than you, and that you were 13 and he was about 19...

What a turn of events.

Step 1 ) Pick ice climbers
Step 2 ) Learn to 0-death chain grab
Step 3 ) laugh
Step 4 ) ????
Step 5 ) Profit.

I know somebody who used to think edge guarding was cheap. But if the game favors that tactic (that is, if you do that tactic it increases your chances for winning), that's how the game is played, whether it was developed that way on purpose or not. If smash favors edgeguarding, that is a part of what smash is like. If a fighting game favors doing 50 hit combos into supermoves, that is what the game is about. That's the metagame and ultimately how it "should" be played.

Don't like it or hate it? Find a game that was developed in a way where the game favors your playing taste. Hate campers in FPS's? Find a game that allows you to REALLY punish campers (pick Quake or Unreal Tournament over Counterstrike/COD4).

Edge guarding cheap? I've been edge guarding since SSB64 this should come naturally to anyone who plays a smash game. Tell your brother to stop being such a bully. Because if he can't handle losing to his Thirteen year old brother in front of his friends he isn't ready for life. Which is sad considering he is nineteen.

Your bro is like my friend saying Edgehogging/guarding is cheap. Just tell your brother Good luck if he ever goes against a real player (People on the Forums)

...Super Smash Brothers is a very sophisticated form of "king of the hill" where whoever stays on the stage/hill the longest wins. It sounds like your brother doesn't know the point of playing this game, eh? The point is to keep your opponent off the stage or to knock your opponent off the stage. You may use anything in your character's arsenal to do so. The point is to be the last man standing.

If you weren't supposed to be able to edgehog/edgeguard, THERE WOULD BE NO EDGE TO GRAB. Or, your character would -instantly- climb up onto the stage with invincibility frames to protect you. The point is, the game is designed so you can hang on the ledge for an indefinite period of time. It was made that way.

Now, your brother is just reinventing a new game. A "lets not use this, this and this" kind of game. That's perfectly fine, but you should have the heart to tell your brother he isn't playing Smash Brothers. He's being a scrub. He's using his own set of fake, nonexistant "fair" rules. If he wishes to play that way, all the power to him. You can't really force him to play differently. My suggestion: Get new opponents. Or better yet, make friends and play with them. Your brother is just upset that you utilized an element of the game that he never thought of, and beat him with it.

If he is supposedly better than you and he consistently gets edge hogged in brawl, there is a problem....
