Due to a lack of any other penguins like Dedede on the whole of Popstar (he's clearly of no relation to Pengis), I currently assume that Dedede's egg was abandoned before he hatched and he was probably raised by Waddle Dees (and spoiled somewhat, hence his occasionally greedy behaviour), so I've thought about this from two angles.

1: Adoptive Waddle Dee father - Probably a bit out-of-his-depth in raising Dedede, and probably spoiled him because of Dedede being alone on the planet, as far as others of his kind go.

2: Actual father - For some reason I picture this guy as being sterner and more serious than Dedede is. No Waddle Dee influence, you see, and penguins have a bit of a stereotype attached to them as sticking to order and all that - things that Dedede doesn't really do.

It's possible. That would be awfully specific, though. Like, Dedede's Dededesigner (that one was for you, Noggin) would have to know ahead of time that he wanted to create a penguin king. Doesn't seem like something you come up with on the fly.

He didn't. He just calls himself the king. No one gives enough of a **** to tell him otherwise, because he doesn't really DO anything as king. If he does, the citizens just don't listen to him, and Dedede, being Dedede, doesn't give enough of a **** to enforce his so-called "law." It's a mutual giving of ****s, or rather lackthereof.

I dunno - Sakurai obviously cared enough to put in so much detail. Hell, listen to this - these are Little Blue Penguin calls. He obviously cared enough to replicate that sound in Smash 3DS/Wii U (this is the sound of the filter that Dedede's clips were run through).

I don't think Dedede was ever meant to be Kirby's rival, that would be Meta Knight.

Officially, though, they are rivals. Friendly rivals, certainly. Meta Knight's a bit more unstable.

This is, of course, not taking into account King Dedede's extreme OOCness in Adventure.

You see, not so many years ago, a series of oil spills threatened the Little Blue Penguins off of the coast of Australia, and the Phillip Island Penguin Foundation established the "Knits for Nature" scheme and a knitting pattern so that volunteers could help out - the little jumpers prevent the penguins from trying to preen and therefore ingest poisons, and they also prevent them from catching colds once the detergents have done their job and removed the dangerous substances, unfortunately along with their own natural skin oils and normal feather functionality (they needed to keep the sweaters on whilst recovering). Even Australia's oldest man joined in with the knitting!

The foundation received so many knitted sweaters that they had to call a halt to the scheme, and to this day you can buy plush penguins wearing the leftover sweaters from the scheme, which raise money for the protection of these birds.
