Ok so ive been playing melee for around a year now, took a break from it when brawl came out, but started playing again in the last few weeks.

Anyhow, when I started, I was the worst smash player ever. So i practiced until I could beat everyone, except this ONE guy, who is the best melee player ive ever seen IRL.

He beats me, but not by a long shot. I sometimes beat him, but overall he wins more times than me....

that being said, im becoming more and more fluent with wavedashing and l cancelling, and of course, he has difficulty countering those, effectively narrowing the skill gap between us...(he doesnt use wavedash/l cancel, but uses alot of other at's)

thing is....he still beats me on average. Most of the time with 1 stock and some damage....but still: im getting beat by someone who put considerably less practice into melee than me (he has been playing longer though, and played vs people than me)

How do I beat him? Practice more? Im currently doing that, but I dont think that the only thing...sometimes i play ****ing great, combo like a pro and edgeguard perfectly, but other times ill do the stupidest ****...that cost me the game...

anyone been in a similar situation (hard to beat opponent) and surpassed it?

His just smarter. At your level it might be easier to just use shiek/peach.

You should also post videos..watch videos.. well yeah it's the same advice you'll get every time. Just remain confident in beating him. He can't be that good from what you say.

what I suggest is like you said, challenge more people in vs. mode, or simply attend more tourneys where you can possibly gain some good experience, maybe then you rival won't be as tough

Im confident in my capacity of surpassing him...but **** its taking some time lol
(mind you i went from being the ****tiest player to the only one who can give him trouble )

We are both samus mains btw, and yeah i watch vids

but has anyone here surpassed seemingly unbeatable players? how did you do it?

I have, and I did by working my *** off analyzing videos and coming up with new mind games, it sounds as if this guy is simpler better at mind games than you, what characters are you both using? that alone will help us give you advice.

If you're playing samus vrs samus then you should focus on survivability and camping. I was going to tell you to upload a video but there's no way in hell im gonna watch two tanks dink each other for 8 minutes.

Try falcon, sheik, ganon, marth, or fox, all of them have good match ups against samus. I love playing mario against samus too.

I guess, things I can tell you about hurting samus are... jab her missles, or ftilt them, when she's recovering, try to time an up-tilt (if you're playing samus) to hit her before she grabs the edge.

i'm pretty sure fox vs samus is not that good for fox when my friend asked hugs he said it was close/even and when he asked watty he told him basically the same thing.

Yeah, I think samus vs fox is even as well, and i think samus has an avantage on falco. Falcon/ganon truly **** her tho. Use one of them.

Well you have to develope a stategy to defeat him. If you find out what he commonly does in certain situations then you can counter him and learn to dominate him. Basically if its close like you said in one game where you have 1 stock left. You have to think if i die im done. Basically you classify his move then strike when the times most opportune. You have to be a little less agressive wat this point. If you have found out his strategy then you can play agressive and kill him. Just try to figure him out and you will win

What stage do you play? Is it always fd as decided by him? If so, use "Dave's Stupid Rule" (It's strange that it's called that and used at the same time) to your advantage. CP a totally different stage, you might not even have to change mains. If it's always fd as decided by him, then it should be easy to defeat him on Pokefloats (he might even SD all four stocks), then he can't CP fd if it was already played in that set.

It's very likely that the stage is causing a lot of your problems, also you can super-wavedash across the stage. Missile spam + Super-Wavedash = the exact reason I hate fd so much, try that. I doubt he'll be able to do much about it besides missile spam back or Super Wavedash himself.

Most players are creatures of habit. Analyze what he does most.
For instance. I used to beat my friend alot. He noticed i liked to rolldodge behind him. So he would counter my rd by using his dsmash. Basically ending my habit. Once you take him out of his routine and out of his comfort zone he's more likely to lose. Make sense?

yeah but we're at a more advanced stage than this
i mean we know our options by heart we always play samus vs samus its a matter of applying them at the right moment

but anyways good news, I beat him 3 on 3 today with my falco

he also played vs another falco who could do all the AT's with falco (yeah pretty much all with flawless execution) yet beat him

edit: i dunno if this makes any kind of sense im high right now

Best way to beat him is to unplug his controller apon recovery. It works every time. :)

Aside from the joking. People already gave great advice.

-Watch for habits.
-Learn more about the match up. Ex: Your character vs His
-Watch matches on the match up.
-Play better players.

These people aren't pros and if the Samus he's playing against doesn't L-cancel, fox can abuse the hell outta that with his speed.

In fact a LOT of characters can abuse the hell outta that with their speed, even young link could run circles around samus, his ground speed is faster and his projectiles come out faster, that right their is enough to work up a counter strategy with a LOW tier character.

If he doesn't L-cancel, then you should go for shield grabs. I would also go with Falcon for this matchup. He comboes floaties like crazy. Dash dance fakeouts, and throw in some empty shorthops --> grabs. Make him sweat!

Whatever you do, stay positive. I know it sounds stupid, but it works. I got 3 stocked by my friend, and then after calming down, I was able to **** him the next match. Keep thinking and stay calm. Getting angry makes things worse. The calmer you are, the better you can play and make decisions.

when i started i knew this really good halo player who got better than me with sheik in 30 minutes (ithink some of the mindgames transfered over). hes just a smarter player and you need to play smarter. i **** this guy now he never got good at at's or he don't use most of em. anyway you should feel lucky because my only good training partner is an idiot with very fast hands... hes really not that hard to beat. stupid falco ******* wont let me play peach.....
