Do Pros ever let loose and "play"?

Yes, this is Brawl related. And Melee related, but it has more relevance here.

First of all, I'd like to state that I'm an amateur. That is, I don't play for money; I play for fun. So, I'm far from the best player out there. Ken could probably beat me blindfolded with his hands tied behind his back.

I know that the tournament standard is "3 stock, no items, Final Destination." or something like that. I'm fine with that. But I know someone online who rarely ever plays anything else, or if he does, it's something like Final Destination.

Now... Again, I can understand the tournament standard. I'm not protesting that (except maybe turning off smash ball, but I'll be silent about that because I know I'm probably wrong). What I am protesting, though, is that sometimes it seems like professionals don't play to play anymore; they're always training.

Do professionals ever let loose, set the stock to 5-8, turn all items up on high, and select a random stage? Just for kicks, not for training? I mean, sure, the tournament standard seems alright, but it also seems like it'd get old after awhile if you were playing for fun, inbetween tournaments.

I'm just wondering. Thanks for reading this.

For a lot of people playing on normal stages and no items is fun, and there is so many that just can't seem to wrap themselves around that fact. For me, dieing because of a random bomb explosion is not fun. Dieing because someone got the hammer is not fun. Hearts dropping in front of players is not fun. Dieing because I got ran over by a car that killed me at 50% is not fun. For some people that is, and that is fine they can play that way if they want to.

it depends if you considered 5-8 stocks fun. playing a match more than 4-5 minutes to me is boring. items are fun in ffas. but you should take into consideration for that for many people who play w/ tourney ruleset only, that is their definition of fun.

I think the biggest question is, do these "pros" (which are not pros nor have they proved it) ever face a random person they dont know?

From my research, they face people they only know and are considered pro by those same morons who get beat by them time after time again, they face no one new, they dont want to face anyone new, and they dont want to face someone they dont know.

Gimpyass, Eggz, 2 sorry excuses right there that backs out from anyone, theirs more then that to.

Fun is really subjective. Like the other people said, I'm not the biggest fan of items because my friends always capitalize on the ones that spawn in front of them and it gets irritating fast. On the other hand, I enjoy 1p modes like SSE and Boss Modes but most of my friends see it as a bore.

You really cant define "playing" or "fun" as one definition. You can step on alot of nerves by doing so.

I have a friend (and while he's not a pro, pretty good still) who likes playing by those rules. But sometimes in between our Final Destination rounds, we'll play a battle on the Spear Pillar or the Summit with Bob-Ombs. If you ask me, it doesn't matter how you play, as long as you have fun. And I'm sure the pros have fun doing what they do.

i really cant say too much that hasn't been said, but yea, i play tourney rules most of the time, but sometimes i play with friends that use items and such, and when i encounter that, i simply play that way and take it as it comes.

Gimpy is an attention ***** anyway, apparently thats the qualifications to be ""PRO"" and be admin on this piece of **** site.

I like how you say noob scrubs though.......... I guess your flawed logic is, they need 5,000 post on a board (WHEN THEY COULD INSTEAD BE PLAYING BRAWL HUHHHH?) in order to have any credibility, this is why SWF is the B I T C H That smash bros wishes it didnt have.

Can't agree with you more METROID, when my friends who are nubs wanted to play I just said I was tired and handed the wii over to them to play with whatever rules they wanted. I just dont find playing with items or banned stages fun at all. Also, swordstrike if the people listed had to play everyone who challenges them all the time when do they have time to do anything else? Noobs like to challenge people all the time if gimpyfish and eggz played every noob who challenged them they wouldnt have time to sleep, eat, etc etc.

I think it's cool swordstrike how you can't find a quote and just proceed to post the most ******** things that come to your mind. Guess that proves you don't know what you're talking about huh?

Well since it is so easy to find then, give me a quote. It shouldn't take someone like you very long to find.

1.) Gimpy and Eggz are hardly representative of the professional community on the whole...if there can even be a pro community for Brawl as it is right now, anyway XD

2.) It doesn't take a pro to have reservations about fighting unknowns. My friend who is far from a Smash pro is so shy he won't even party with people he doesn't know in an MMO because he feels uncomfortable. Myself, it takes me a while to get comfortable fighting random people online...hell, I won't even join a team slayer game in Halo half the time because I feel more comfortable in Big Team Battles where there is less pressure on me to do good as a unit since there are more people around.

3.) There is no 3

4.) Why do you even have so much anger for Gimpy and Eggz? What did they ever do to you?

well i don't know for sure, but i would say it makes sense for them to only play their friends. when i go to a tournament i'm down with playing random people.. but when it comes to just hanging out i like playing with my crew. i could care less about random wifi matches (wifi is terrible). if you want to play eggz or gimpy so bad just go to a tournament they go to and hope you get a chance to play them.

Guys, he's a troll, a good one, and ban bait. Let it go.

I hope the use of racial slurs is an insta-ban around here.

Anyways, OP, I don't really ever play with items, and if the guy I'm playing with wants to, it's only non-healing items and no bomb-bombs.

But I really don't like it.

I think I'm too competitive by nature.

you can call Gimpy pro all you want, but fact is hes not, hes just a loud mouth 5 year old looking for attention.

First off, I had to reply to that. I'm a 'no name'. I mean, people know about me in Oregon, but no ones like OMG KAMI WATCH OUT. I consider myself a competitive player, but I'm still not good compared to most. You could just say I'm a random person, for sake of argument.

I have met and played Eggz before, we played in a tourny match and a few friendlies. He isn't a jerk, he didn't shoo me off because I was terrible, we just played. He's a nice guy. After severly whomping me several times, he shook my hand, said good match, and then played some friendlies with me, and even talked with me.

I know him, and many other good players are infact, not total jerks. They're normal, everyday people. They would probably play with you if you asked them, even if you were a 'random person'. So, please, do not bash them.

As to the OP and just 'playing', to me playing by tourny rules is 'playing'. I'm an incredibly competitive person in real life, and to me fun is playing other people in competition. Items add variables to the game, not a fan of that. I like to win by fair rules, knowing that I was actually better than someone, or at least for that match. Even losing is fun (as long as its not in constant succession, but even then I can make jokes out of that), because I learn new things and get better at the game.

Edit: Are there really trolls on smash boards? If so... well, at least I said something nice about Eggz.

I like playing with tournament only rules with my friends (except we go to five stock) simply because that's more fun for us. We don't want there to be any luck involved. I don't find non-tournament play "not fun" (as I'm often stuck having to play that online, when I do play online), but I'd prefer it being more of a match of skill.

Also, swordstrike, I find it ironic that you call Eggz and Gimpyfish five year olds. It is clear to me that anybody who swears as much as you do for no reason as only recently discovered swearing, and is using it to grab attention. Ergo, I estimate you are probably not a day over fifteen, and are quite possibly younger than that. Education is a measure of maturity, and clearly, you lack the education that informs you to communicate in a civilized fashion. Therefore, I am left to guess your age based on your maturity, which is why I'm being generous when I guess you to be fifteen.

I have fun in 1 on 1 on "normal stages" (i.e., not stages like New Pork City) with 3 stocks, 8 minutes and no items. It's my idea of fun.

I can tolerate some items being on for the sake of my fellow players if they prefer items to be on but I'd rather they be off. It's simply my idea of fun. And I'm willing to bet the majority of Competitive Players feel the same way.

Stop using the word "Pro". Most people call themselves Competitive Players.

I think the experts 'train' by just playing each other. Whether playing friendlies with people from their crew, outside of their crew, or even participating in tournaments. To me it's like having fun, playing the way I want to play (and also, it's the way that I EXPECT to play when I enter a tournament) and training all at the same time.
It's not all about training and money. It's about the thrill of facing an opponent who is making you work for your win. The adrenaline rush when you've got people behind you watching your match, knowing that whoever gets the last hit off will be the victor.

Though I think VERY RARELY I'll play with items on and some random stage. I'll admit that it is great fun, but to me, playing on that competitive level is just more fun, as well as more practical.

You obviously don't know what you're talking about. You really are making yourself look foolish right now, so I'm going to clue you in on the tournament scene and the community. You can thank me later.

First of all, what 'research' have you done? So pros never face anybody new. That doesn't even make sense. Pro players are 'pros' because they participate in tournaments which anybody can join, and that includes people they've never seen before. And where have Gimpy and Eggz backed out? Back out of WHAT exactly? They go to tournaments and compete. That's more than you can say about yourself, you'd rather get online and talk a bunch of trash that you wouldn't be able to back up if someone confronted you about it. Where do you get off on insulting them?

I like this guys rhetoric, non existent.

On Topic: Tourney rules are cool, but items are fun sometimes. Just being too random isnt fun. Or ledgehop knee into a bomb kinda loses its fun factor.

My only problem is when people say that, you dont need to short hop in ffa, thats all haha.

hey swordstrike, you came in here taking names and pissing on them. how about showing some respect? i dont mean to pick a fight with you but seriously, i'm sure gimpy and eggz are real nice guys and you're just being really immature about it

on-topic: i think competitive players have plenty of fun doing what they do. they just like the organized competition. if any competitive player out there does not have fun playing smash, then he/she should not be playing it, no matter how good he/she is.

Ah, so you lack intellect as well as education. When did I ever bring grammar into this argument? I did not. I say that you are uneducated because education teaches us (especially psychology) that inappropriate behavior, as you display in copious amounts, is a reflection of a low level of maturity. Now of course, there is a difference between mental and physical maturity, but the two are generally linked. Your mental age is definitely no greater than thirteen, so I could care less if my guess on your physical age was incorrect by some ten years. Basically what I'm saying is - grow up. Stop swearing like a sailor for no reason just because you discovered swearing a couple of days ago and think it's cool. It doesn't help out your argument.
