swordstrike: Just get out of here. Get out. You have no idea what you're talking about, and from what I'm hearing, all we know is that you're a ignorant, arrogant spammer. Just get out of here man...

Swordstrike will be banned ,but could we PLEASE get back on topic? You're just giving him unneeded attention. Thank you.

On topic: It has been said before, but people's definition of fun can vary. Just look beyond your own view, what might be fun to you might not for someone else and vice versa.

Competitively, I absolutely ADORE no items. Could care less about what stage I'm on (unless it's New Pork City. It's fun but TOO big. *insert Ridley joke here*), but I prefer to win by skill (and some people can argue handling items requires skill, to each their own!). But Items ARE fun if you're only putting them on low. That way, you're undisturbed for the most part? THen bam, something comes along. Oh! Coolios! A gooey bomb! TAG! :p

I prefer no items as a competitive player. I'm Pro-Am at best, and like to take my smashing seriously (wether it be Melee or Brawl), but items in the right amount and at the right event? Hooboy it's super sexy times alright.

I tried playing the game with all items on, on medium.

Found that really annoying and boring, No idea why. Then I tried some on low. Then just Final Smash. Soon enough I just realized I find the game more fun without items on at all. I do go on all the stages though. Not that l'm at pro-status, though.

I think I might be close.

I'm going to stop talking now.

I thought playing a game in the first place was letting loose and having fun. It's not like playing in tourneys is a job or something menial.

With that said, I like to play tourny rules, as well as random item multiplayer matches.

Playing with items on a completely random stage is not fun at all for me. On the other hand, playing without items on a neutral stage is one of the most fun things I've ever done. That's why I'm on smashboards. Different people have different tastes.

Yeah I agree with Kio. If I had continued to play on random stages with items I would have quit a long time ago. It's much more boring for me then an actual match.

I actually enjoy playing the game with competitive rules more than I would with items on and with crazy stages. But to answer the question, yeah, sometimes I do end up turning all that stuff on. It's just not as fun.

Yes, this is Brawl related. And Melee related, but it has more relevance here.

First of all, I'd like to state that I'm an amateur. That is, I don't play for money; I play for fun. So, I'm far from the best player out there. Ken could probably beat me blindfolded with his hands tied behind his back.

I know that the tournament standard is "3 stock, no items, Final Destination." or something like that. I'm fine with that. But I know someone online who rarely ever plays anything else, or if he does, it's something like Final Destination.

Now... Again, I can understand the tournament standard. I'm not protesting that (except maybe turning off smash ball, but I'll be silent about that because I know I'm probably wrong). What I am protesting, though, is that sometimes it seems like professionals don't play to play anymore; they're always training.

Do professionals ever let loose, set the stock to 5-8, turn all items up on high, and select a random stage? Just for kicks, not for training? I mean, sure, the tournament standard seems alright, but it also seems like it'd get old after awhile if you were playing for fun, inbetween tournaments.

I'm just wondering. Thanks for reading this.
lmao yea that **** is great, you just can't take it seriously. getting killed by a bob-omb when its 1 stock left is hilarious when it doesn't cost you RL money.

Thanks guys. I was just wondering since I, an amateur, am not sure what qualifies for fun with professionals :p I'd think only FD would get boring, but whatever works, I guess.

...although I honestly didn't expect a miniature flame war to break out o_o that was weird.

they play all sorts of maps as long as the map does not affect the gameplay too much. I personally don't enjoy using items or ridiculous levels i.e. 75m or super mario, and the electroplankton one.

As I often play with two or more friends, random characters + items (often on low, medium is a little too much) + random stage is always fun, because after a while it doesn't matter who wins anymore.

Why do people think that "pros" only play on final destination? It is 100% false.
If by final destination you mean neutral stages, than that makes more sense.

Anyway, I like playing on any stage that isn't plain stupid (big blue, the DK rapids stage, etc). Items were fun at first but after a week they got boring and frustrating. I'll play with items in a 4p match, but in 1v1 I have more fun without them.

Spear Pillar is actually one of my favorite stages. Upside down stage ftw.

Sorry about that. I suppose I shoulda specified... this one particular professional made it clear that he generally only plays on FD, while sometimes playing on another stage that's like Final Destination. (And he'll play on Pictochat, which confuses me, because other than the basic layout, it has a very random system of drawing... which, I would assume, would totally ban it from tournaments)

So, my bad.

Personally, I have fun when I play smash. Doesn't matter to me what the rules are... items on or not, I love it! Of course, items on high are a little obnoxious, but I play with them on medium or low. Well, when I practice against the lv 9 CPUs (kinda fun now, they are better) I don't usually have items on. Although I am a sucker for a Final Smash... I love getting them, because even if I fail at using it properly, I stopped it from going to an enemy. :lick:

Oh and my favorite level (or one of them) is the new Yoshi Story level. IMO, it's the most fair level in the game aside from the little... thing... that pop up ever-so-seldomly on the sides of the stage.

I have fun in 1 on 1 on "normal stages" (i.e., not stages like New Pork City) with 3 stocks, 8 minutes and no items. It's my idea of fun.

I can tolerate some items being on for the sake of my fellow players if they prefer items to be on but I'd rather they be off. It's simply my idea of fun. And I'm willing to bet the majority of Competitive Players feel the same way.

Stop using the word "Pro". Most people call themselves Competitive Players.
This. The only exception being that I like 4 player FFA's as well.

I'm a competitive player and I myself when I'm playing with some friends who aren't competitive about the game turn on items and have fun. Even when I play with competitive friends if there is some complication and we can't get another set up after some 1v1s we just have ffas with items on so we can all have fun without having to switch in and out and have some people be bored for like 7 mins.

This is like asking a professional artist whether he ever "lets loose" and plays around with coloring books.

I think the biggest question is, do these "pros" (which are not pros nor have they proved it) ever face a random person they dont know?

From my research, they face people they only know and are considered pro by those same morons who get beat by them time after time again, they face no one new, they dont want to face anyone new, and they dont want to face someone they dont know.

Gimpyass, Eggz, 2 sorry excuses right there that backs out from anyone, theirs more then that to.
If you browse this thread at all, even though youz banned, here is my aim

eggz2021
I will money match me for a round trip plane ticket to your house and 2 days of food.
I make that offer to every random who starts talkin ****, and no one ever takes it up. I like to travel and meet new people, so please accept!

First off, I had to reply to that. I'm a 'no name'. I mean, people know about me in Oregon, but no ones like OMG KAMI WATCH OUT. I consider myself a competitive player, but I'm still not good compared to most. You could just say I'm a random person, for sake of argument.

I have met and played Eggz before, we played in a tourny match and a few friendlies. He isn't a jerk, he didn't shoo me off because I was terrible, we just played. He's a nice guy. After severly whomping me several times, he shook my hand, said good match, and then played some friendlies with me, and even talked with me.

I know him, and many other good players are infact, not total jerks. They're normal, everyday people. They would probably play with you if you asked them, even if you were a 'random person'. So, please, do not bash them.

As to the OP and just 'playing', to me playing by tourny rules is 'playing'. I'm an incredibly competitive person in real life, and to me fun is playing other people in competition. Items add variables to the game, not a fan of that. I like to win by fair rules, knowing that I was actually better than someone, or at least for that match. Even losing is fun (as long as its not in constant succession, but even then I can make jokes out of that), because I learn new things and get better at the game.

Edit: Are there really trolls on smash boards? If so... well, at least I said something nice about Eggz.
<3<3<3<3

edit: I'm not sure how recent this thread is LOL, I just searched my name looking for these kinda thing roflmao

But uhh in response to the first post, yes, pros randomly turn on items and play weird stages on occasion, when we get thoroughly bored with practicing and just want some random bull**** fun.

yeah at some point im sure all the pros unwind and just chill playing games for fun, especially when their friends come over. but even though im not a pro, im decent...and to me playing those 3stock no items FD games ARE fun just cause idk the intensity of it I guess but i never really see it as "training"

I personally found items amusing the first day I had it after that they just annoyed the crap out of me. So even though I'm no where near Pro, I personally prefer no items. I like most of the stages, but the Final Destination stage really just makes its skill as theres nothing to it. Overall I prefer games to be based off of skill and skill alone not luck.

Whenever my friends are over, we pretty much do random stuff to amuse ourselves.
