The analogy between Melee being the better game than Brawl is similar to XP vs Vista. Vista sucks, so people go back to XP :p (which I have done)
Not going to happen, on my Vista, I can play 360 games on it with no problem, (I got Ultimate). I'll say don't get the upgrade but get it natrually build in your computer or labtop however. I say that Vista is better than XP, and I thought you couldn't downgrade to XP?

But anyways, since Melee is on the GC, it's not going to last too long, due to a large amount of people not owning or playing GC games anymore. GC was the least liked system between PS2 and Xbox

Uh did you know you could play Melee on the wii? And if you want to downgrade just start the setup up from the boot screen and you should be able to that way.

I hope Melee will last the next five years...I have to play both games to get my fix now.

Brawl was tailor-made for my fighting style; I like to play strategically instead of relying on pure speed. However, Brawl also flipped me an eight-story bird by removing l-canceling, fast-falling, and hitstun, cramping any combos I could have thought up. Then, Brawl induced massive butthurt across the globe by eliminating HITSTUN. Absolutely horrible move there, Sakurai.

I still play Brawl way more, but every now and then I have to pop Melee in and get the nostalgia going. Jiggs just isn't the same in Brawl...

If SSB64 can maintain an underground following, Melee should be able to hang in there, seeing as it's way more competitive-oriented. Maybe it can even steal people from the Brawl tourney scene (yes, that is an oxymoron to an extent).
Brawl needs more strategy...I won't even bother.

Anyways, odds are that Smash64 will still be going for the next 5 years. So hell yeah, Melee will still be alive!

Yeah, because the last time I checked I couldn't play Melee on the Wii?

well by the look of things between the Brawl vs, Melee Debate I'd say yeah I sure has a chance of lasting a few more years, especially tourney-wise

No it won't, don't mean to be the bringer of bad news but it's rather naive to think it will. Then again stranger things have happened. (mango winning pound 3 LULZ)

Be really cool if there weren't so many threads talking about this, brawls here who cares just play the game you like. Now how about we have a melee thread in the melee discussion that actually talks about melee.

Melee better last the rest of my life *shakes fist*

or at least until Super Smash Bros Brouhaha comes out, assuming it doesn't suck compared to melee. (which it probably will)

Melee will outlast Brawl. I doubt Melee will go out of print anytime soon, you can play it on the Wii, and Nintendo is still making GameCube controllers. There's nothing to stop people from continuing to play Melee, especially since many people are starting to realize that Brawl is inferior to Melee.

People keep pointing out numbers of Brawl tournaments. Sure, a bunch of new people are showing up to those, but look at the recent tournament in GA. Huge turnout there, and I think this trend will continue as Melee tournaments continue to pop up.

Melee will definitely last 5 years!! And longer! Right now more people will obviously be playing Brawl because its been recently released and also i feel there is that little part in everyone that secretly prays that if we play it long enough and hard enough we will find those advanced tactics and techniques that will blow Melee away for good! Like when it happened with Melee and it blew smash 64 away! Personally i dont think Brawl is good so im a little biased but realistically Melee will NEVER fall off for an inferior game! It doesn't make sense! Until Nintendo get it right i think Melee will be around for a while yet!

Didn't melee blow 64 away without AT's? Brawl doesn't even do that, IMO. (look at sig)

I think that melee will inevitably die, and heres why...

With the interest in brawl, the amount of players at the beginning level will begin to drop rapidly. Eventually, as players get older, they will grow tired of the game/get a real life. Debate it all you want, but look at all the older players that have dropped out. So without the young crowd to continue it, there won't be much of anyone left in a few years.

Also, as the metagame of brawl develops, people who think brawl is boring (like me) may end up taking interest in brawl after a while, taking away the chance that melee will come back.
If competitive ssbm got out to the younger crowd, they may just go to melee over brawl. If some young d00d saw MLG SSBM on tv or something that would persuade them to play the game.

I think that if street fighter 2 turbo can still be played, then Melee can last 14 years aswell
That's similar but different

Super Turbo and the whole Street Fighter 2 legacy made fighting games possible and in demand. Without this, no Smash at all most likely. It's just so classic and the top players keep getting BETTER (scares the hell out of me)

Melee can live on as long as the scene trys to keep it alive. Show people who want to learn how to play, get hype with your crews, try and throw a little tournament in your area, just keep on breathing life into it

Good example would be how Street Fighter 3: Third Strike got kicked out of the EVO line up one year. The community picked up their game and threw crazy hype, tournaments and made their game popular again with word of mouth, because of that it's back in EVO and it's still huge. That's a community that goes NUTS about their game, really loud cheering and hype levels. Makes it look fun and makes people want to play. This is what Melee needs

We should start a couple major events in the months to come. A great idea would be US East vs. US West, or i that isn't possible it should be like Nor*Cal vs. So*Cal to restore Melee to its former glory.

I Realize I quoted this before but I was on a Wii so bear with me, lol.

Problem-Brawl is what is interesting now to the younger crowd that would eventually become our competitive crowd if they were playing Melee instead. Without these younger people to support Melee, a game made in 2001, this game will eventually die out.

A Thought- Melee was awesome. It has proven itself to be an amazing game with a TOO RAW competitive side to it. Perhaps we cannot attract casual smashers with Melee, but what if we found some way to promote Melee towards older teenagers who are looking to get into competitive gaming?

A proposed very sketchy prototype solution- .Promote Melee to the competitive community by showing it through the media/having it involved with major competitive gaming companies that draw that sort of competitive crowd such as MLG/EVO. Increase Melee tournaments, melee awareness, and you could get young brawlers who are looking for real competition to switch over to melee instead. Also the older competitive community could set an example for the young smashers by having fewer brawl tournaments as well as more melee tournaments.

Any thoughts? I realize my thoughts are a tad disorganized, and I do apologize for that.

Absolutely. Great games will stand the test of time, and melee is a great game.

Brawl is great in its own way, but it will never have the competitive spirit that melee did.

At the very least, I'll keep playing melee because I don't even have a wii.

I think that this would take quite a while, but here is another rough sketch to consider.

1. Find X organization that deals with competitive console gaming. Petition to X organization for Melee to be put into the circuit with TOO MANY *Lulz* signatures from interested SSBM players. Show X that there is indeed a huge interest in melee still and that many would still love to play. Show them that their organization can benefit monetarily from this interest in Melee.

2. If accepted, use this opportunity with the media. Call it something like "Melee preferred over Brawl for competitive gaming". Someone could make an official article from say X organization's official website, and this article could then be spread to various brawl websites as well. In other words, some how get the word out to young brawlers that if you want to be competitive melee is the way to go for sure.

3. On large SSBM sites such as this one, set an example for the new people who have come here primarily for brawl! Put Pro-Melee things in your signatures such as links to melee tournaments, media coverage on melee in the past *ProLife-I'm a professional Video Gamer*. Show them that melee is what all the older, cool people are doing. ;).

4. Get involved with your region! Set up melee only tournaments, talk about why you know brawl is out but you prefer melee instead, and encourage brawl beginners to come to melee tournaments to see what we, the older portion of the smash community are really all about. Show them what real competition is in smash, and what a great experience a tournament can be. Maybe once beginners have seen the level of intensity melee is capable of, they will take a light to brawl's old cousin and play that instead.

5. If everyone does their part, the younger community WILL begin to notice melee, and maybe, just maybe, become a part of it. If we can do this, Melee will have a much higher survival rate.

Just some thoughts off the top of my head.

Although they will recognize the Melee community as a beastly force, will the younger audience have the diligence to maintain practicing a frame-perfect gameplay? Let's hope so and create a petition thread to send to vh1.com or mtv.com and have some of the more professionals go over and introduce the mechanics in a user-friendly way.

Younger competitive gamers are as dedicated as ever. If we could do it when we were getting started I'm sure they'd love to sacrifice some time to practice and learn how to play this game.

I agree, professionals would be great for showing the X organizations on why Melee should be picked. But I believe a crowd even more influental to this than the SSBM Professionals exists.

The Brawlers. And I don't mean any brawlers. Technically we are all brawlers. I mean the brawlers who have been introduced to melee and changed their preference.

If BRAWLERS petition and go "Yeah brawl's alright but if you guys did melee I'd much rather go to that", then that would honestly, just be sublime.

Melee is a sinking ship as is ssb64 before it. It will still be around but on a very mino scale. the majority of players are going to brawl. You cant beat this titan. wether its a good game or bad one.

How can you say that Brawl is an unbeatable titan when most of the top players like melee more? rofl, brawl is just surviving on hype. Melee is an amazing game with roots in a very strong a fanbase that is unwilling to give it up. SSB64 is still going, and it actually had a superior successor.

I got into competitive smash when brawl came out, for the purpose of being competitive. I thought it was too late to start playing melee so I didn't try. But now I'm just sick of Brawl. Melee just seems so much more intense and skill based I'm giving up on Brawl and starting to learn melee. **** SHFFLing is hard... :(

Of course I'll still play brawl, but i've decided to switch my focus and im going to bring as many people with me as possible. The melee scene can only grow as new brawlers who joined the community to be competitive realize their mistake (like me).

It's a shame at how people are making tournaments for Brawl so early before people could actually get good at it and instead are forced to leave Melee if they want cash prizes.

I know L, it's pretty sad. I myself have a much better chance at winning a cash prize at a brawl tournament. But that's not going to stop me from standing up for melee's awesomeness.

it definitely will because they still host tourneys for it and their are a load of people that prefere melee over brawl so it could easily last the next 5 years.
