The Evolution Championship Series, or EVO, announced its main lineup for its 2019 tournament in Las Vegas occuring this August. Smash players will not be surprised to hear that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has made it onto the list, and that it will be featured on the main stage Sunday. Yet, to the surprise of some, Super Smash Bros. Melee has not made it on either list. This is the first time since 2013 that Melee hasn’t been a part of the main lineup. At this time no side events have been announced, so there’s a chance that Melee will exist in some form at EVO.

The main lineup for Evolution 2019 is:
  • Tekken 7
  • Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition
  • BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  • Dragon Ball FighterZ
  • SoulCalibur VI
  • Mortal Kombat 11
  • Samurai Shodown
  • Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st]
The four games for EVO Sunday are:
  • Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition
  • Tekken 7
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  • BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle
Registration is now open on the EVO website.

It’s true. Melee is a relic of a bygone era. I don’t want to see it completely obsolete from tourneys as it’s still fun to watch, but literally every other series drops its previous installment to support their latest game. SF3 3rd Strike is an infinitely better game than SFV, so why isn’t it in major tourneys anymore?

There’s no problem with clinging to the past, but apparently, the Melee nostalgia is so high that emotion is a considered factor when adding it to big multi-game competitions like Evo. I still play ancient games every now and then, and it’s not wrong to have side tourneys for those, but now you really don’t see a lot of new folks enter Melee competitively because it’s from a whole other age.

Even if it’s old it’s great and people like watching it so I think it should still be there. IMO Third Strike and MVC 2 should too lol

Clarification: I think Evo should be the best fighting games of all time, not just the newest

My point is that it just can’t be old games all the time. It’d get stale quick since there’ll barely be any new material to watch. Evo is about deciding who is the best in the world at current game, anyway. You wanna be the best Super Turbo player in the world at Evo? Better get that DeLorean ready.

Game developers aren’t going to work on patches for decades-old games because it’s the hot stuff. Instead, they rely on the consumer base to rake in money in order to make a new and improved product that receives active support by both the players and devs. That way, there’s plenty of variety to be found, patch notes keep games healthy, and newcomers are more welcome than ever due to the declining difficulty gap. Alas, games evolve and so do their followings as time passes. We need more new material to keep things fresh.

That's what they use the "community tournaments" for. Fairly sure there will be a 3rd Strike tourney there, along with a bunch of other old games that don't get the main stage any more. Wouldn't doubt if Melee shows up too. But the Smash community is more stubborn and volatile than SF so IDK.

I wonder why they removed melee.

Only reason I could figure was logistics with CRTs, otherwise cutting it makes little sense to me.
Armada said the CRT theory probably isn't true. He said that even with all the CRT's at Evo, they still had more than enough room.

By this definition, Smash is indeed a sport.
Since you did not define what a sport is, I did. And by my definition, Smash is a sport. Hold that L
By that definition chess is also a sport lmao. Sorry guys i love competitive smash but video games aren’t sports period.

Hmm then yeah otherwise I got nothing on why they would cut out melee. Only maybe fringe idea I got left is melee general had zero overlap with other games.

I got nothing in the sense in this given the numbers and viewership.

Melee had a good run. It’s still viewed a lot within the actual Smash community. There is quite literally no value making any comments about how you’re glad to see it gone just to spite the players/spectators of the game. Please refrain from further dividing the players. Thanks.

Is Nintendo sponsoring the event at all? Could be a condition of receiving it that they dropped Melee to show off their newest game.

In the words of Salem, "Finally"

Nah jk, but I dont enjoy watching melee so this doesnt affect me. But the game isn't dead by any means.

Great, one less fake news "competitive" game out the window. All that's need to be taken out is smash ultimate. Smash bros was never made to be played competitively (unlike what the board brainwashes you into believing), and the removal of melee shows that.

This has to be a troll and if it is I love it

Nope, no trolling here. Smash bros was never made to be played competitively and every interview proves that. The removal of melee is part one of proving the point that me and many others have that smash is a casual party game that was never intended to be taken seriously. Getting rid of ultimate is part two.

Oxford Dictionaries, Cambridge English Dictionaries, Dictionary.com, Wikipedia, and the automatic google dictionary specifies a sport as a game of physical exertion and skill. Smash is a E-sport, with emphasis on E. Just a clarification, not knocking you at all.

All that I highlighted I viewed as dangerous, with some being sadly true.

Really tired, but in a nutshell, game-hopping is a indication that fighting games aren't designed well enough for long-time engagement. There needs to be a higher level of expression and more options for players to mess with, and right now, there aren't.

I personally blame it on the limitations of the characters in fighting games being too specific and simple.

Just curious as to why you are on Smashboards if you are not into competitive. Im not trying to instigate anything or send any negative messages, just a homie to a homie. I wanna hear it out thats all :)

One day, Melee and Ultimate will live in harmony. Then all the trash talk will cease to exist.

Because I want to unbrainwash everyone who believes smash games are competitive with the overwhelming amount of evidence that exists.

Ok I gotcha. Not that the hundreds of tournaments and thousands upon thousands of competitive players make a game competitive so I see where you are coming from. Why do you want to un-brainwash people?

Because they are playing something the complete opposite way it was unintended to be played. As I have stated in the past, competitive smash bros would be like having a socialist as the president of the united states, the country of free market capitalism.

So you are saying a game can only be played in one specific way as you see fit? As goofy as an example as it is, look at Minecraft. Would you ever second guess someone playing that game differently than you? Why should it be different for Smash? There are different rule changing options for a reason. Plus Ultimate was made for competitive play. They had pro Japanese players test the game. I just think your argument is flawed but I could be dumb

Why does it matter to play the "intended way"?

Quit taking the bait, this guy is super obvious. He literally only hates on socialism and competitive smash on that account, and he doesn't even have an icon

Who cares what the 'greater' FGC thinks, the Smash community is self-sustaining with or without the support of all the other communities. And I doubt getting rid of smash is some kind of endgame for EVO. That's too much money off the table for EVO(And promotion takes a hit for Nintendo). I wouldn't be surprised if it was Nintendo themselves that wanted this. Having that old game up there does nothing for their bottom line. It's probably embarrassing to them that such a large number of the community hangs on to the magic of that game over the newer one's.
It's not about what the FGC think. It's about what they want and they don't want to be associate with Smash Bros too much.

Smash doesn’t need Evo to be successful, though.
Casually? Without question. Competitively? To an extent.

Surprisingly enough, the FGC is into Smash way more than the Smash community is into any FGC stuff. You just have to look beyond the dregs low level people on twitter. Top FGC players respect the game a lot. What people generally don't like is the whininess and neediness of the community. Regardless EVO does whatever they want and no one can really fight it except for the game publishers.
As long the "petty" people exist in that community, it still stands they don't want it in. And with that thought process, then Smash will be gone eventually and it'll be just like the Brawl days but with even less exposure for the competitive crowd.

It could be a good number of reasons not involving that
1. They probably saw that the community is currently pissed because of Hbox
2. The melee community accepting Ultimate as pretty solid
3. Notable players either taking a break from melee or retiring to focus on Ultimate (Plup and Armada are the most notables)
4. Feeling Ultimate will represent both communities fairly well and that another committed community like Unist (which is a genuine blast to play) should get their time to shine
5. Melee already has all these grassroot events to keep itself afloat
6. All these Melee players saying they don’t really need Evo
7. Money to buy extra equipment specifically for Melee
8. A little bit of all of the above

Yeah it sucks but Wiz did warn us at last Evo that there was likely going to be only 1 Smash game, so even though I was mentally preparing for it, it still kinda hurt

Overwhelming evidence huh? I don't suppose you gathered that through YEARS OF RESEARCH, did you?

Listen I'm sorry if this counts as off topic, but somebody absolutely had to do it.

from what a friend told me, these days, there's a lot of crossover between games, and while Smash has a couple of standouts (look to Leffen VS GO1 in Dragonball FighterZ as an example), the majority of Smashers tend to stay with their own crowd... I can't really say that's the case for Ultimate, but it's certainly a case to be argued for Melee...

so, from what I've been told, money plays an inevitably large part in the choice... and with current trends in mind, Melee presumably causes EVO to lose more money than it gains
