I'll be in charge of my store's tournament, and I figured I'd let you guys know EXACTLY what you're looking at instead of guesses and assumptions, as well as reasoning behind how it's going down.
On March 8th, 2008, select Gamestop stores (visit www.gamestop.com/smash to find the store nearest you) will be holding their in-store tournament between the hours of 9-12 PM, with the exact time depending on the turnout, preparation done by the store, etc.
Things you'll need to know:
1) All participants must be over the age of 13 due to the T (Teen) rating. Anyone under the age of 18 (19 in certain states) must have a parent or legal guardian be there for registration to sign for them (must have photo ID).
2) Registration is free, however some stores require reservations while others do not. For the stores that don't require reservations, customers that want to enter that DO have it reserved have top priority.
3) Games will be 1 (one) minute timed matches, with the winner being determined by the highest number of KOs. For anyone wondering, yes, I do know this is a ridiculously short period. One minute is recommended, but some stores may extend the time limit.
4) These will be 1v1 matches, with the winner of each match advancing closer to the final round.
5) Concerning the controllers: Gamestop will provide each tournament with a Wiimote and Nunchuck. Some stores may offer classic controllers. Controllers cannot be brought from home. Nintendo is doing this because:
-They want to further advertise use of the Wiimote and Nunchuck
-The final tournament may only be Wiimote and Nunchuck exclusive, meaning that no one is allowed to have an unfair advantage in the tournament's beginnings.
6) Winners from each store tournament will advance to District, Regionals, and the final tournament which I believe is held in Las Vegas.
7) Registration requires the name you'll be going under, contact information, and the character you will be playing for the tournament.
8) Only the beginning characters and levels will be opened for this first tournament (mainly due to the fact that we haven't had time to unlock anything else). The tournaments to follow may alter this rule.
9) Participants MUST be present 30 minutes before the tournament begins or they will be eliminated. MAKE SURE YOU'RE THERE!
I think I covered just about everything, but it's a little late and I just got off work. If you have any questions, feel free to bug me between now and Saturday. Contact your store if you have specific questions that only they can answer. Have fun guys, and good luck!
