Gamestop tournament

I'll be in charge of my store's tournament, and I figured I'd let you guys know EXACTLY what you're looking at instead of guesses and assumptions, as well as reasoning behind how it's going down.

On March 8th, 2008, select Gamestop stores (visit www.gamestop.com/smash to find the store nearest you) will be holding their in-store tournament between the hours of 9-12 PM, with the exact time depending on the turnout, preparation done by the store, etc.

Things you'll need to know:

1) All participants must be over the age of 13 due to the T (Teen) rating. Anyone under the age of 18 (19 in certain states) must have a parent or legal guardian be there for registration to sign for them (must have photo ID).

2) Registration is free, however some stores require reservations while others do not. For the stores that don't require reservations, customers that want to enter that DO have it reserved have top priority.

3) Games will be 1 (one) minute timed matches, with the winner being determined by the highest number of KOs. For anyone wondering, yes, I do know this is a ridiculously short period. One minute is recommended, but some stores may extend the time limit.

4) These will be 1v1 matches, with the winner of each match advancing closer to the final round.

5) Concerning the controllers: Gamestop will provide each tournament with a Wiimote and Nunchuck. Some stores may offer classic controllers. Controllers cannot be brought from home. Nintendo is doing this because:
-They want to further advertise use of the Wiimote and Nunchuck
-The final tournament may only be Wiimote and Nunchuck exclusive, meaning that no one is allowed to have an unfair advantage in the tournament's beginnings.

6) Winners from each store tournament will advance to District, Regionals, and the final tournament which I believe is held in Las Vegas.

7) Registration requires the name you'll be going under, contact information, and the character you will be playing for the tournament.

8) Only the beginning characters and levels will be opened for this first tournament (mainly due to the fact that we haven't had time to unlock anything else). The tournaments to follow may alter this rule.

9) Participants MUST be present 30 minutes before the tournament begins or they will be eliminated. MAKE SURE YOU'RE THERE!

I think I covered just about everything, but it's a little late and I just got off work. If you have any questions, feel free to bug me between now and Saturday. Contact your store if you have specific questions that only they can answer. Have fun guys, and good luck! :chuckle:

Seems like I know everything already, but this is a great thread! Also I have a question, will I be able to go to my GS and play Brawl before the tournament for some practice?

More than likely not. The thing is, we'll be setting it up out of view of the general public until the tournament is actually supposed to begin, because they don't want anyone getting any unfair extra practice. The majority of people in the tournament haven't played the game or even seen these forums before. ;)

Oh, and if possible, could someone point me to or link a screenshot of the character screen with just the beginning characters? I'm gonna be playing it a little tomorrow and Saturday, but I'd like to have a good idea of what I'm looking at.

I called my GS yesterday and they said that they should be getting a demo in today. I wasn't able to call today, so I'm not sure if they did or not. So, is the GS you work at going to have a demo, or have you heard of one?

I've heard of a couple out there. They may allow the demo to go out simply because it's a demo, but in terms of the ACTUAL game, you probably won't have your hands on the controls till your turn comes up in the tournament roster.

The starting characters were all the characters on the Dojo before launch, excluding Sonic and Snake. So, all the characters minus those two that aren't in the Hidden Character section.

I was at my gamestop today talking to some guy that worked there about the tournament. He said pretty much everything i already knew except for the fact that all characters are picked random so u don't even get to choose who u wanna play as. I don't know if thats just my store but that seems pretty weak if u ask me.

Seriously? 18 to sign up without a guardian? You can play ****ing mature titles while being just 17. WTF.

It doesn't have to deal with the ESRB rating. The 18 without a guardian requirement has to deal with Federal Laws concerning contests and prizes received from such contests. Do not blame Gamespot, Nintendo, or the ESRB. It is legal matters that all parties have to conform to when organizing a contest such as this.

Let me get this straight, everyone who wins the local moves to district, and everyone who wins district moves to regional, but according to the rules not everyone who wins regionals will move on to the final round? I remember seeing something like that in the rules, and thought it was messed up.

Some stores will being at 10, but you need to be there 30 minutes before the actual tournament begins. That's what the OP said about.

i called my gamestop today and asked about the tourny. i asked what controllers would be used and he said "it's going to be melee with gamecube controllers." I'm not sure if i heard him right because my phone broke up a little when he said that. I think he might be saying that melee will be set up to play for fun, during the tourny.

he may be confused or i may be confused... either way i know it'll be fun.

i honestly don't think it would be melee but w/e. i'll find out saturday.

Is there a prize for winning a local tourney? I've heard from some people that you get the game free, and from others that you get nothing. It'd be nice if you got something for winning locals, even if it was just a strategy guide or shirt or something.

Can you verify if this picture of the first-round prize is real or not?

http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o187/theGhost888/004-2.jpg

Normally I would assume it was fake, but someone I know who works at Gamestop posted it...

EDIT: Okay, this just CAN'T be real... even if he works at gamestop, he had to be lying. I mean, it doesn't even say the full name of the game, or have "nintendo" or "gamestop" on it.

It looks quite fake. Not to mention it looks like it is in someone's home and not the back of a Gamespot.

Hey I've got a question tho.

I'm bringing 4 other friends with me and were all under 18 and my parents are driving us there. Will they be able to enter the tournament or do they need to have their own parents to come to register them? Or can my parent do that for them?

Ok, finally awake, so I'll address what's been said so far.

Items: While these were not stated in our official rule packet we received from corporate, the majority of Gamestops do seem to want them to be on. I think it's more or less a store's personal preference, as I will definitely NOT have items on. For that info, call the store closest to you.

As for the trophy you all saw: Yes, that IS the first place prize at each store's tournament. Every store in my district received that, and I was actually playing with mine yesterday at work. ;)

Keep those questions up if you need anything!

The guy at my local gamestop said that the trophy that they are handing out looks like a wrestler, so that looks like it could be real.
