Ok, I am having a ton of trouble beating my friends Olimar. His smashes are insanely good, especially his up smash which tears me apart. I also have a pretty hard time approaching him, so any tips would be greatly appreciated!

A good olimar really counters fox. With the range and speed of his attack and his size...its hard to get inside. Either you're going to have to outwit him or i'd suggest getting a secondary to counter characters that have a large advantage against fox, such as olimar.

Mindgames help with a good Olimar. Since it's hard to tell when his smashes are coming, try Fox trotting or dash dancing, lasers, shorten your Illusion, wait for the smash, and go for the attack. But Olimar does have a good radius that is hard to penetrate, so either way it's going to be tough.

Lol all of the things you two are referring to are universal olimar characteristics. They apply to all his matchups, not just fox. He has strong, hard to punish smashes, great grab range, and good camping skills against everyone.

I for one do not find this matchup particularly difficult. While it is difficult to approach olimar, it's very easy to force him to be the aggressor and approach himself. Laser spam ***** Olimar, as it far outranges his pikmin. It forces him to approach, and puts you at a huge advantage. Drill -> up tilt works well, like in almost all matchups. Your reflector is good for reflecting Pikmin if he tries to approach you with pikmin tosses and the like.

Honestly... Vouche. Got my approval xD, i SHDL spam most Olimars till they have to go on the offense. Once he's on offense he's fair game but he's still a big pain in the backside.

I find the shine really helpful in this matchup. Sit back and laser spam until you can get on offense and then do your best to not let omar breathe. stay close. Omar's recovery is pretty lame and easy to edgeguard. i've shined a few off the map and they had no chance of coming back.

The main thing with Olimar is playing mindgames, also for getting close jump do a aerial dodge if he attacks then use your dair. Once you get in just keep pummeling him off the stage then you can either shine spike him or just edgehog. Hope this helps.

Hell yeah, this is a fun *** match-up...

Laser spamming only goes so far against a good Olimar. If you really wanna have an edge against a good olimar, force him to play the up close game with you. D-air and N-air basically counters his up smash, but make sure that you land behind him with both moves to prevent shield grabs and for Fox's u-tilt.
Dash shield grabbing is a must if you wanna constantly put that fool under pressure. Also, Olimar is sub-par at recovering, so use edgegaurd tactics accordingly. Watch out for his fair tho.

I don't know if this was assumed, but your lasers will block his pikmin, even though Fox's gun usually has no stun or knockback to speak of. In other words, yes, lasers are good against Olimar.

I'l say this to all the Foxes. An Olimar who has played a Fox at the start of the match won't pluck six pikmin. He will run across the stage and grab you or aerial ace, Forward Air or any aerial really, you while you are pew-pewing lasers.

Once a good Olimar plays a Fox, they know not to play the long game and will stay in your face forever. Think about this as you continue to discuss the thread.

And yes, nothing is more scary that a Space captain running headlong through lasers to grab you by the throat.

i would say shine spiking works the best because olimar's recovery is the worst. if that won't work just counterpick a char against olimar

One of my friends is an Olimar main, so I've been trying quite a bit to come up with some effective ways to deal with him, one thing that I've learned from fighting him is that if you make a mistake, you'll be punished for it badly, something to watch out for in particular is blue pikmin if you are above 100%, a single grab > backthrow from them is often able to send you to your death. One thing I've also noticed is that yellow pikmin have priority over Fox's dair, I'm not 100% sure on the other colours and whether Fox's nair goes through it, but i'd definately recommend doing something else if you are approaching from above and yellow is the next pikmin in his lineup.

For my general strategy I try to mix up my approaches with shorthopped nairs/dairs as well as attempts to bait an attack that can give me the opening for a grab - which i'll try to follow up with a fair or nair, you've really got to keep a constant pressure applied, if the Olimar manages to break away and you continue trying to combo in this way you'll get punished pretty badly, so you'll need to reshift your focus to creating that opening to once again resume your comboing.

Gimping is, of course, a very valid way to KO Olimar at lower percents, especially if you manage to land a D-smash or bair, I find the majority of my kills come from my up-smash however - It can be hard to land especially against an Oli who has fought a good Fox before, but usually it's possible to find an opening - either through a dair > upsmash or a running upsmash, try to keep it uncharged and for the most part you should find that it kills from around 90%.

That's all that I can think of atm, I'm still not the best at fighting him myself so I'm definately looking to see what some more experianced Fox players have to say, good luck! :)

I've played a couple of Olimars during Socal tournys, many of them are really good (Mr.X).

I noticed that if you stay too far away from olimar, he seems to have a huge advantage over fox. The trick to playing against olimar in my opinion would be to stay close to him at all times in order to pressure him to get some distance.

If you fight Olimar mid-range, you're almost surely going to lose since his Pikmin specialize in mid-range fighting. So your best bet would be to hug onto olimar, but be smart about it.

Fox has a really strong advantage over olimar through arial attacks. Since Olimar can only smash horizontally or strictly vertically, coming at an angle with a SH fAir or dAir can be helpful. One thing I learned is that if Olimar attempts to uSmash while fox does his dAir, almost certainly Fox's dAir wins because he cancels out the pikmin and then drills into olimar.

As far as lasering goes, don't waste your time camping an Olimar. If the Olimar is quick, he'll easily punish you for staying in your laser position for too long, and that's definately not what you would want.

There are two really easy ways to kill an Olimar: Vertical KO or edge gimping.

Of course fox specializes in killing almost any character through an uSmash at around the range of 80% to 115% (this includes all light to all heavy characters). Because Olimar is classified as a light character, you can easily Vertically KO him through an uSmash at around 90% for a sure kill.

Another KO technique that could be situational is when you edge gimp an Olimar through edge hogging while Olimar has no other options when he is off the stage. If you have olimar near the edge of the stage, you can do an easy combo of dAir > dSmash which will launch Olimar in a downward direction, a really hard recovery for olimar if you edgeguard. Just remember not to stay on the edge for too long just in case he gets smart and smacks you with a fAir =).

In order to kill Olimar, I prefer doing a dAir > uSmash combo at high percentage because it's almost always a certain kill, but don't forget you have the other option of gimping Olimar on the edge.

I think I covered everything. If not, i'm sure someone else will fill in the blanks =).

i really like Gamble's post. It shows that he has some pretty good experience fighting Olimars. Detailed and technical.
