me and my smash buddy are constantly shield grabbing eachother like madmen. Its gotten to the point were we can no longer attack each other from the air unless its with a move that has enough range to not be shield grabbed. I feel like we have reached a standstill in our game, can someone please highlight some ways counters to shield grabs?
THanks

Don't approach with arials is my advice.

Sidedodging is a good way to stop it. Dash up to him and side dodge once you're within his grab range, then jab. Other variations: lots of times people will try to shield grab your dash attacks. Try running past him, stopping, and tilting in the other direction.

And ffs stop attacking shields! ;)

Try jumping over with an aerial, then holding away and falling with your aerial. Retreating aerials are generally harder to shield grab, unless he's also moving towards you.

Also, try falling an aerial and landing behind him.

-Use projectiles or attacks that allow you to space yourself out of grabbing range. If they block it, their shrinking shield will discourage further shielding.

-Some attacks are good for hitting the enemy through shields like Game and Watch's Bair.

-simply dash grab or boost grab him.

-Some characters have moves that work in the air but function like a grab like Wario's bite.

-Marth's Neutral B is a good punisher against shielding.

-certain attacks effectively push the enemy out of grabbing range when they hit.

Use constant projectiles forcing your opponent to approach you. Sheik would be good for this, try using her out.

Ground attacks, retreating aerials, and projectiles to sum up everyone's disjointed comments. Those are your options. I'm assuming you use DDD. Your ftilt will outrange basically everyone's shield grab. Spam waddle d's until they approach. You can also use ftilt to space yourself when they start to get close....or just run in and grab them yourself. DDD's grab range is pretty ridiculous....As for retreating aerials, go with bair, but I'm not DDD expert.

make him play luigi, then unless he is perfect shielding everything he'll be sent sliding too far to shield grab you
you could also try landing behind him after using an aerial:dizzy:

Air dodge behind him and then do a quick attack in his direction. This set of steps will do a number of things:
1) Avoid shield push that many aerials create that may prevent you from landing behind him
2) Put yourself out of grab range
3) Leave yourself mostly unpunishable if he's shielding because he will have to drop his shield and thus get hit by your quick attack

duh, land behind him... you wont be shield grabbed... but if your friend is sexy enough, he can just quickly turn around and grab you, or even turn around and f-tilt... but if he's expecting you shield grab you, which i believe he will, you will have time to jab him or something

Better spacing, retreating aerials, and use dashi -> sidesteps or some other method to bait him into a shieldgrab, and punish with some attack, like a jab.

Mindgames and spacing is all you need.
I hardly ever get shield grabbed anymore since I learned to space.

Do things he doesn't expect, things like...
Retreating aerials...
Empty short/full hops...
Full hop past him and do an aerial as you pass...
Jump as if you'll approach, then just toss a projectile....
Play G&W and use the turtle?
