I think less characters for more tracks makes more sense. I’m not begging Nintendo to delve deeper into the Mario universe right now with its characters.

If the next Mario Kart game had to choose between 48 characters and less tracks or 48 tracks and less characters, which would you prefer?
I’d probably prioritize more tracks and fewer characters as I feel like the tracks are the larger pull to Mario Kart than the characters.

Now that I think about it, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launched with 40 characters* and 48 tracks, which I think would be a decent upper limit for the next Mario Kart to launch with.

*I personally count the two Inklings as the same character and the two Villagers as the same character.

I'd love the characters.

The tracks can be replayed and I get sick of them less. But a good roster is pretty magical.

Out of curiosity, I decided to do a tally of which Tour tracks aren’t in 8 Deluxe in some form.
  • SNES
    1. Mario Circuit 1
    2. Mario Circuit 2
    3. Donut Plains 1
    4. Donut Plains 2
    5. Ghost Valley 1
    6. Ghost Valley 2
    7. Choco Island 1
    8. Choco Island 2
    9. Vanilla Lake 1
    10. Vanilla Lake 2
    11. Koopa Beach 2
  • N64
    1. Luigi Raceway
    2. Koopa Troopa Beach
    3. Frappe Snowland
    4. Mario Raceway
  • GBA
    1. Peach Circuit
    2. Bowser Castle 1
    3. Bowser Castle 2
    4. Bowser Castle 3
    5. Bowser Castle 4
    6. Luigi Circuit
    7. Cheep Cheep Island
    8. Yoshi Desert
    9. Lakeside Park
  • GCN
    1. Mushroom Bridge
    2. Dino Dino Jungle
  • DS
    1. Luigi’s Mansion
    2. DK Pass
    3. Airship Fortress
  • Wii
    1. Dry Dry Ruins
  • 3DS
    1. Daisy Hills
    2. Cheep Cheep Lagoon
    3. Shy Guy Bazaar
    4. Mario Circuit
    5. Wario Shipyard
    6. Bowser’s Castle
  • Tour
    1. Warp Pipe Canyon
That’s about 37 Tour courses (mostly retro) that are on the table to return in the next Mario Kart game. Out of all of these options, which courses would you like to see return the most?

I think everyone would like to see DS Airship Fortress back.

I would love to see GBA Bowser Castle 4 after it’s Tour makeover.

Huh. That's almost enough for another full BCP, but at the same time I can see why they wouldn't do that, what with all those Mode 7 tracks.

Something I just thought of: what if the next Mario Kart had some randomly generated tracks? These shouldn’t be instead of regular tracks, though; there’d be maybe 2 GPs consisting of random tracks, so 8 track themes total.

F-Zero X back on the N64 had the X Cup, which was a randomly generated cup that existed in addition to the regular premade tracks. I don’t think Mario Kart random tracks would look like the X Cup’s random splines, though (except maybe for random Rainbow Roads,) they’d probably be a collection of premade track chunks that are arranged randomly. They’d still be vastly more varied than Excitebike Stadium’s random ramps.

In time trials, a random track would be generated for each theme each week.

I think it’d be a fun change of pace if done right. Normally in Mario Kart you can just memorize all the track layouts, so having tracks where you have to improvise on the fly would be fun.

I haven't been around in quite a long time, but the sighting of this thread did warrant me to put my personal inputs on what the next Mario Kart sequel should do.
  1. Keep the vehicle customization features from Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart 8. They help to offer more stat spread diversity.
  2. Most of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe roster would return, but there would be some cuts.
    1. Cut characters would include Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach, Link, Villager (male and female), Isabelle, Inkling Boy, and Inkling Girl.
  3. Stat spreads between weight groups should be more consistent, like with how Mario Kart 8 handled it.
    1. The stat spreads in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe were not consistent, especially with the Traction stat.
In terms of stat spread adjustments that I would implement on the character weight groups...

The Cruiser weight group would be reserved for large-sized middleweights, such as Rosalina, Waluigi, and Pauline; Wiggler's medium body frame would consequently put it in the Medium weight group. Whereas, the Metal weight group would be reserved for medium-sized heavyweights, such as Metal Mario, Pink Gold Peach, and R.O.B. (if he was to return).

With the new, retro-N64-Mario-character-render art style, I kinda especially want to see how the guest characters look in it, assuming they return.

I do hope skins/outfits return. It sucks having multiple slots taken up by a single character. I'm fine with it being a redesign though, it looks great. I know a lot of people aren't happy with it though. I'm moreso happy that we have a new design for him instead of Nintendo just recycling the same design that's been used for over 2 decades, even if it is a 3D rendition of classic art.

I think we expect too much. No, they’re going all in on RPGs, Luigi, Yoshi, DK, and Wario characters. Let’s get that expectation out of the way now.

I think Tour is an omen of what Mario Kart 9 will be.

Nabbit is by far the most likely newcomer to join.

Expecting the RPG characters to get in is a long stretch when you realize that the RPGs in question were developed by 2nd party (3rd party in the case of Square Enix) developers. Heck, when you look at the WarioWare cast, they've only appeared in the games that Intelligent Systems had developed, which strongly suggests that Nintendo doesn't have the full rights to them.
