I never played any of the previous SSB titles, so I'm looking for some tips on improving my game. I haven't played a fighter in a while, but I used to be pretty good at them. I'm doing pretty good at Normal and Hard modes against the computer, but the few times I've fought online I've gotten beat really badly. Would you recommend fighting on harder levels against the computer or fighting online against people that are much better than me to improve my game? Also, what are some basic tips that a newbie like myself might be missing? Thanks for the help!

Both.
Also, get your friends to play and get better too, it allows you to play against people constantly

Fighting any human is vastly better tgan fighting a computer. Play against friends and people online. Also, try practicing specific techs and strategies on low level comp / in training mode.

if you want to improve then just play, play, play, play, play, play, play, play, play, play, play, play, play

playing computers are good I guess, if they're on level 9, but humans are waaaaaay better to improve your game

Play until you know by heart all the different characters' moves and how high they jump and that stuff. Experience will do wonders for your mindgames.

Like someone up there just said, get friends into the game and have them play as much as you do. That sort of competitiveness will get your (and their) game up. That's what I did with one of my best friends, and we were pretty good in Melee.

The downside to that was that you'll only be as good as your friends are and I had never really played in a big tourny or outside of my friend circle. The online capability will definitely help a lot more people get their skill up, and I look forward to joining some local Brawl tournaments soon too.

Just keep playing, man. As the other people said, get your friends to get better with you and make sure that friend circle is big if you aren't able to play in tournaments. Online play frow Brawl is also crucial. The more people you play the different strategies you see making it easier to get better. Practice certan techniques that you see online and make sure you try to master a character instead of being a flip flop. :) hope this helps

Smash Brothers is all about knowing the individual spacing that is required to be effective with every character. When you get down to it, each character has about five moves that have enough priority/range to be used regularly in a match. Once you figure out which moves they are for every character, life gets much, much easier.

A good idea would be to play as and learn the movesets of absolutely every character. This way you have a better idea of what to expect coming into a match.
