What high/mid tier characters need are 2 good stages against their superiors. That would help out more than trying to figure out glitches and exploits or abusing mechanics and character specific attributes.

If you're trying to help matchups by giving characters more stages to counterpick against Meta Knight I don't see how you're not effectively giving Meta Knight the same luxury in the process.

Of course. The way I see it, by good stages, I mean stages the effectively benefit said characters overall, more than it'd benefit MK. They gain more than he gains, which is effectively a net increase for them.

Like, we know FD is an okay stage for MK, but its a better stage for Falco/ICs.

X stage is good for MK, but X is better for character A.

X is +5 for MK, but + 10 for Character A.

etc etc so on and so forth, you get what I mean.

I don't see why Green Greens would ever happen if you took stage-bans into account.
Mostly cause he doesn't know I second G&W.

Actually, that's a lie, everybody who has played Brawl seconds G&W.

No seriously, if you start off with another character, you're more likely to get the option. Heck, if they see through it, they waste their ban on a stage that will never come up.

Starting marth (melee) has allowed me to get away with some incredibly fun peach matches because they automatically banned yoshi's.

That's rather isolated thinking. One stage that benefits some characters a significant amount will very likely hurt others too. Add in a bunch of these stages and you're effectively making the first game matter more and more, which is, unfortunately, limited to starter stages.

You are coming up with increasingly convoluted solutions to a problem that you generated first by introducing an increased number of counterpick stages on the premise of "balancing matchups."

Also, unless a custom stage strictly detriments Meta Knight and benefits others, it will have the same effects as the rest of the stages. You're only making more of a spaghetti network of possible stages for every character (including Meta Knight) to use against every other character.

i wish that the BR would come up with some custom stages to be integrated as normal stages, EX some starters and some counterpicks that are fair, and that are widely used... that IMO would add more changes to tournaments, i would love having another few starters/counters....

think this might ever happen?

i am SOOO for standard custom stages

The OP was terrible and clearly not well thought out. The discussions in this thread have turned to the OPer saying he thinks MK should be banned but doesn't want to start that. Now the discussion is concerning the use of custom stages and Ankoku owning.

Just giving an update.

I suppose. I guess that's just a fault with the game and its characters.
Exactly.

*Plays melee*

Sorry, couldn't resist, but seriously Brawl has major balance issues at all levels of play, and metaknight gaining the most from counterpicks is an easy example.

I heard MK vs. GaW on Green Greens is in Game and Watch's favor. Too bad it's banned in most places.
I'm sorry.

I didn't think this post out. Even if it was legal, one match doesn't determine the set anyway.

My bad.

Which is why we should be using custom stages to help alleviate that.

That would be interesting to see, with homebrew channel it allow people to download updates from the net and shifting data from SD cards isn't hard. If there was some way to safe guard the quality of the stages I can see that being really possible.

...you dont need a homebrew app to make custom stages nor do you need a homebrew app to make hacked custom stages (you'd need a PC app for that)

What you really need is the willingness of TOs, the community, and BBR to really test out custom stages and its virtually unlimited potential.

no.. thats not what i was saying...

i was saying a homebrew app that gets the latest standarized stages from a server and downloads them directly to the SD card.

that way just boot up the app to download it instead of checking online all the time

like the brawl+updatifier, but for stages instead of .pacs and .gct's

The potential of custom stages is limited until people figure out how to build stages outside the major constraints of the Stage Builder.

The most significant constraint I refer to is the limitation of only being able to use the Stage Builder pieces. Custom stages are unable to be much more than Lego creations because of it.

There was actually a beta code to allow manipulation of pieces out-side out the standard scale, meaning 1.5 size pieces, 1.3334 pieces, etc etc, so rather than working on specific increments, you could brake that law and work outside of them, meaning paper thin pieces that start half way in a grid rather than on the dotted line.

I believe that the biggest change will be that the percentage of power shields is going to increase. I'm willing to bet that we'll see players reasonably reaching seventy-five percent consistency levels with their power shielding or higher. Already, characters are shifting towards their fastest, safest move sets to avoid retaliation, and the increased skill in power shielding will make this even more apparent. At the moment, the approaching player is at a disadvantage, and I believe that in the future they'll be at a grave disadvantage.

On that note, I believe that match ups are going to be re-written to take into account the dynamics of playing from behind [or ahead]. Many, many, many match ups change drastically once an opponent has lost their first stock. The entire flow of the game changes, since people are now willing to time out out matches, and that threat is enough to force people into action.
can someone tell me what powershielding is and how its pulled off

wow, only been to 1 tourney (COT4, didnt even get to play in the braket, just friendlies)

but that seems like it willkill the game, 1st stock gets a huge atvantage
One stock already has massive advantage. Any hit you land when you're behind a stock is a waste of time if it doesn't kill them. Every hit they land on you becomes their advantage next stock. Percent leads are fickle and can mean nothing in the face of a gimp or other early kill. Stock leads are a horrible hurdle that you have to overcome before you're back in contention. Being a stock behind makes players rush in, desperate to land that kill.

I really wish there was some way to play without a time limit, but tournaments would take forever.

I don't think anyone will see any major advancements to the brawl metagame in terms of physics. It seems like people have picked the physics in the game apart with a microscope. I think the only progression we'll see is if TO's actually start mixing up their rules instead of following the backroom's standard. Not to undermine them but in truth, the BR could say that the time limit should be at 8 minutes, but in the end, it doesn't matter what they say if the community doesn't feel the same way. It seems that the community has come to acknowledge a status quo and have gripped and held onto it as if it were the holy grail. I think a bit of mix-up should be acknowledged in the rule sets of tournaments, cause when it comes right down to it; the community gets what the community wants, they just have to facilitate the change to do so which I don't see often. This point isn't to help urge the discussion of banning metaknight [I could have sworn that, that ship had already sailed anyway] but rules in general ie. timer, stages, characters, whatever else.

I don't really care about character balance, because no game is perfectly balanced [Although Capcom is making the claim that TvC: UAS is a perfectly balanced game :p] but rather the competitive scene as a whole. I took a break for a few months to play SFIV and now that I'm back, I was a little disheartened to see that pretty much nothing has changed.

can someone tell me what powershielding is and how its pulled off
Powershielding is performed by hitting the shield button within five frames of the attack hitting you. Basically if Falco's laser is about to hit you and you shield right before it hits you, you will hear a "ching" noise that lets you know you powershielded.

The benefits of powershielding are the nonexistent shield knock back from shielding something and it allows you to remove your shield much faster than normal which saves time, making you less vulnerable. Another benefit is that it restores your shield to full size whenever you powershield a move. It also strikes fear into the opponent's heart as an added bonus.

I personally think that where the thread has derailed to is stupid. I don't even know where to start breaking apart what people say, the amount of facepalms i'm doing is beyond reality... Frontal lobe hemorrhages due to so many collisions with a mysterious supersonic object (palm of my hand). I don't mean to sound elitistic, but come on. Someone even said:
thats not being smart. thats just doing what is proven to win so that you can win in a boring way.
It doesn't matter if its boring or not! if your goal is to pay $20.00 and enter a tourney to win money, THEN YOU WANT TO WIN MONEY. If the strategy that gives you the best guarantee to win isn't against the rules, then why not do it? You want that money, and you're gonna give the money up because the majority of the people want to see something that appeals to them? Games and fads change, but money doesn't. Pleasing a crowd in a Brawl match and losing won't get you that nice MP3 Player you've always wanted. If the strategy works and you want that money, then you use it if you are intent on getting that money.

Can you argue that everyone loves their jobs? No you can't, and the people that don't love their jobs still do them to get money, and they enjoy what they do with the money more than what they do to earn that money. Is competitive gaming the same? Should we have fun and throw away money, even if there's a pretty good chance we can win by being boring?

I say you play your way, I play mine, and campers play camping ways. If you don't like it and want to change the whole competitive scene by injecting morals which won't be followed because of the stench of the money on the line, then you'd be better off doing tourneys of your own with your rules, and seeing if it goes far. Lots of people disagree with camping (i personally despise being timed out by friends in tourneys when they don't play that way during friendlies), but it IS a strategy that requires experience, practice and skill to pull off perfectly. Why remove one strategy when the 'cheapness' of it is completely subjective to peoples' opinions and their biased thoughts over how "Brawl is great because we do good on it and not in Melee"?

Pardon the elitistic tone, but that's how my brain decided on writing this and i don't want to sprinkle diamonds over my message.
