Hello everyone! Just a simple question: If I was to air a Smash 4 NA tourney via online, and first place would receive $10 in eshop money, how many of you would be interested in joining?
Of course, this would be the first of potentially many tourneys. I am slightly low on funds, so the $10 eshop card would have to do.
IF this was to happen, it would probably happen on October 3rd, 4th or 11th. If there is a large enough interest group, we could extend it to two days.
This is specifically to see how much interest there would be for this type of tournament. Thanks for reading, and post your thoughts below! THE TOURNAMENT WOULD BE FREE ADMISSION.

I'd be interested, I suppose. But it should probably be priced to 50 cents or something. This way, you pay for a good time and get funding for the prize.

That is a good point, but there is no way for me to currently receive any money from others (long story). Plus, what if those who are potentially preteens wanted to join? How would they get the money through?
And it is okay. I get paid, I can pay for the cards. I would be joining tte tournament too of course...

That's the stumbling block I found too (I'm a young teen.) I suppose we could barter via Steam, that has good trading functions...

Does this have to be region limited? I'm british.
I am super super sorry, but unless anyone else would be able to fund for a UK or Europe card, this tournament would be limited to those who ca use NA codes.
Although, I guess you can always join in for free, but that would be unfair for me to do that to you and others. :(
I'd join and even place another 10 on the pot to make it more interesting.
I guess you can if you would like! You could fund second place if you want. Just message me for more details on the tournament once you have the card. :)

That could work... although that would STILL be a problem. I think I will just leave it with free admission. It isn't that big of a deal.

So the 11th would work best for you? I was leaning toward that date too, since it would give people time to work on their mains.

ALSO: If anyone who would be joining this would have a way to stream it through youtube or twitch, that would be pretty cool! At least just your matches, since we cannot watch all of the matches of course since we are not all at one location.

What time if on the 11th? I think 7PM EST is the best in my opinion.

I would join for the sake of the experience. Though prizes are always nice.

Count me in!
Great! I will be trying to get some stuff laid out and become concrete before making a new thread for this.

My current plan for the tourney is this:
3 stock, 8 minutes. No items at all.
Custom moves will not be allowed simply because I do not think there is a way to monitor if custom equipment parts are being used (if there is let me know)
Any character will be usable.
There may or may not be a losers' bracket, depending on how much will be joining.
Semi-finals will be best 2 out of 3. the grand finals will be 3 our of 5.
I am thinking we will just use the message system on Smashboards unless someone else has another mode of text chat other than Skype (that is free of course)
I was also going to use the bracket system on Challonge (https://challonge.com/) unless there is a better one to use. It will allow for others to also help with editing the brackets if I am unavailable.
Other things will be added eventually. Just Message me if you have any questions ANYBODY. or any tips.

Challonge might be a good place to use. Don't really see many out there. You might want a cap on how many people can join though. I tried joining a SSF2 tourney and it was pretty organized, but there were a lot of people on it and I didn't see it go through (Haven't checked up on it for awhile now). But yeah looking forward to this!

Well, depending on how many people join, we may or may not have start much earlier.
That's what I was thinking, though, for the sake of organization, it might be best if I played on the side instead.
Hey I have an idea! Since you were one of the first people who asked, you and others could be admins. Making sure cheating doesn't happen would be first priority, but playing with people who have lost could be what you do in down time!
Of course, admins can only be people who are not participating.

For recording process you only need 1 person with a 3DS capture card, he could jump in to spectate the games (or sd at the beginning of the match).

This person won't be able to be in every single match at the same time but at least you can make sure to record semi's and grand finals plus every match that person plays in the tournament.

There is a way to monitor custom equipment. As soon as you activate customization there's a small wheel that appears which starts filling in the more stats you have. If the wheel is completely empty then the person has no extra stats. If the wheel is even slightly filled you know the opponent has some equipment on.

WowowowOwow. Thanks a bunch sir. This is great. Are you able to spectate your friends then? That would be perfect. I hope someone would be willing to do that.
I figured that is how, but I wasn't for sure if you could see the wheel in online matches. That is great. Thanks again Raykz
Custom Moves will be allowed then. And if there is a volunteer that has a capture card that would like to record this (stream preferable) we would really appreciate it! Just message me on it!

You sure That would be great! Right now we currently have ten dolars for both first and second place, so if you would like to pick up a small amount of money for first place (ten-fifteen dollars) that would be great.

Depending on whether or not we want voice in addition to text, I recommend Mumble. There's a server I use regularly, though I'm not sure what capacity it can hold.

I'm interested even without a prize, and have friends who would probably be interested as well. Due to school, though, I'd be unable to guarantee my participation on the 3rd. Basically any Saturday or Sunday would be fine.

As for making it region-free, I think the biggest benefit of region locking the tournament (so to speak) is to simplify time zone coordination. If it was a spread-out tournament (taking place over several days or weeks), then making it international may be easier, but if you limit it to a +/- 3 hour difference, it's far easier to coordinate matches around school, work, and other obligations.

Keep your eyes out for another thread. Details will be in that thread Tonight. Right now, I suggest just to make a Challong account (it is free) http://challonge.com/

I'd be game, sounds like a fun way to kick off the release. I'd say the 4th would be better though, as some places aren't having midnight releases, so it'd give everyone ore time to pick up the game.

That's, like, just enough to buy Kirby Fighters Deluxe. I'm totally in if I happen to have the game by then.

I do agree with the time zones. Makes it much more organized.
About mumble... is it safe to assume it will be voice only? I am looking more for something that the primary use is text (for multiple reasons) Do have any idea?

Mumble only supports voice and text (it is primarily a voice chat client), no video.

Steam, of course, facilitates text chat very well and could be used to coordinate future tournaments and matches (make a Group and use the Group chat, don't even have to add each other). It's also free, though there may be community restrictions on players who do not have games at the time (it's been six years since I made my account and the rules have notably changed since then). That's my personal suggestion for text-focused chat, at any rate.

Thanks for all the help Reijinken. I really appreciate it. I will look into Mumble some more! Sounds great!
